I have been surprised by the sometimes heated debates between Christians. It got me wondering what is the common ground and what is needed for someone to be called a Christian

The list of beliefs I know of.

I suspect these are needed to be called a Christian.

Original Sin
Trinity
Jesus died for sins
Paul is an apostle of Jesus
Bible has no errors
No premarital Sex
Same Sex marriage is wrong

Additional beliefs a Christian may or may not have

Faith not works is salvation
Good works glorify God
Speaking in Tongues
Hell is not forever
God hates
Genesis is literal (Earth is less than 10,000 years old)
Future Sins forgiven
Praying to saints and Mary (Catholics)
Spiritual healing
Heaven reward is the same for everyone
No blood tranfusions
Smoking is a sin (form of Suicide)
All food clean

The bible says:

that if you confess with your mouth “Jesus is Lord” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes into righteousness, and with the mouth one confesses into salvation. Romans 10:9-10

Seems pretty simple.

I disagree with your smoking theory and I am also dumbfounded how you can say that it not needed to think we are saved through faith alone... Also praying to saints is worshiping dead humans... There is nothing special about a saint... They are sinners... And by doing so you are praying to a false god, and making a sinner your idol...

And so many other things... Like really...

Tick these boxes and your a Christian  What about God had mercy on me and revealed His truth to me. I responded and continue to respond in faith?

Put John 3:16 with this, and BINGO............IF we are just trying to "nutshell" Christianity..........BUT I'm not sure we should do that..........just saying........ :)

Two other versions of the same are provided by I Cor. 2:2 "Jesus Christ and him crucified" and I John 4:2 "that confesses Jesus Christ has come in the flesh". Just two statements are needed "Jesus Christ is the chosen of God" and that "He has died and risen and thus can change life forever".

Ephesians 4:1-6

I therefore, ma prisoner for the Lord, urge you to nwalk in a manner worthy of othe calling to which you have been called, 2 with allphumility and qgentleness, with rpatience, sbearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in tthe bond of peace.4 There is uone body and vone Spirit—just as you were called to the onewhope that belongs to your call—5 xone Lord, yone faith, zone baptism,6 aone God and Father of all, bwho is over all and through all and in all.

God writes it down, a list of majors Christians have to believe in order for union
one body - There is one church, one the body of believers in Christ, one way of salvation
one Spirit - The Holy Spirit indwells believers, He is God
One Hope - Jesus Christ is returning
One Lord - Jesus Christ is Lord, He is God
One Faith - God's redemptive work revieled in scripture - the faith once deleiverd to all the saints
One Baptism - Baptism
One God and Father - The Father, He is God

Everything else in Scripture is a minor

Majors Conviction - we don't work with people who don't believe these things, Minors we deal tolerance, all things Love

Why not? It is what it is. Paul obviously didn't have a problem saying it.

Hi T

None of these are my rulings. Smoking being a slow suicide, I got it off a Christian site. Makes sense to me. I would have thought God would not go for it since it was bad for the body.

As far as the OP - it had a lot of trivial things in the list - Mary, smoking, original sin... and I am sure other things I can't remember - but a list of filthy 5 things people do is not a basic belief of Christians, Original sin is not biblical, and the veneration of Mary is not -

These are not even minors

In referencing the "nut shelling" of Christianity, yes Paul made statements as quoted here........and they are true. However, he wrote far more than just those stated here. There is quite a lot that one must immerse themselves in to be a Christian.

Now, that's just me.........but there is so very much for us to do............As I read the OP, it says "to be a Christian," NOT "to be saved......" :) Salvation is STEP ONE on our life journey with Christ as I see it, and it is certainly an important step, but it is just the FIRST........

The list of beliefs I know of.

I suspect these are needed to be called a Christian.

Original Sin (I would say sin. We need to have a change of heart toward God and sin and acknowledge our sinfulness (to repent). But I don't think we need to know the origin of this sin for salvation).
Trinity (I agree that we need a correct understanding of who Jesus is. We need to know that only God can save us from our sin, and that Jesus, who is God, came and shed his blood for us in our place for our forgiveness. And that by believing in Him, and His sacrifice alone, God has forgiven us). A false understanding of the Trinity gives a false understanding of Jesus (i.e. a false Jesus).
Jesus died for sins (I agree - see above).
Paul is an apostle of Jesus (I don't agree. This is surely beneficial and needed for growth, but I don't see it as being a requirement for salvation. That said, I don't understand how one could know what Paul said, and have come to know Christ, and not believe Paul is an apostle of Christ.
Bible has no errors (I don't agree. Again, I see this as surely beneficial and needed for growth, but not a salvation requirement).
No premarital Sex (I don't agree. We are all sinners when we come to Christ. He will change us, but in His power and time. We come to Him and He changes us, not we change to come to Him).
Same Sex marriage is wrong (I don't agree. We need to understand what sin is, and that we are sinners, so I find it hard to believe someone could come to Jesus knowing they are sinful, without understanding sodomy is wrong. That being said, I don't think it is impossible - the Holy Spirit convicts us of our sin, in His power and His time).

Additional beliefs a Christian may or may not have

Faith not works is salvation (As above - by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone).
Good works glorify God (Not required for salvation).
Speaking in Tongues (Not required for salvation).
Hell is not forever (A dangerous heresy. That is, what is Jesus saving us from if Hell is not forever? God's righteous judgement should be part of our belief in Christ and sin, and repentance. I don't think it strictly is required for salvation, but I don't really think one can understand the magnitude of their sin if they don't understand this. Is denial of Hell a denial of God's righteous judgement, and a false understanding of Jesus (i.e. belief in a false Jesus)? Can someone help here?)
God hates (Required for salvation - God hates sin. That's why we need salvation.)
Genesis is literal (Earth is less than 10,000 years old) (Not required for salvation).
Future Sins forgiven (Not required for salvation, but why would you come to Jesus for forgiveness if you thought He couldn't forgive your future sins?)
Praying to saints and Mary (Catholics) (A dangerous heresy. I would go so far as to say if you are doing this, you possibly don't believe in the true Jesus, which is a requirement for salvation).
Spiritual healing (Not required for salvation).
Heaven reward is the same for everyone (Not required for salvation).
No blood tranfusions (Not required for salvation).
Smoking is a sin (form of Suicide) (Not required for salvation).
All food clean (Not required for salvation).

There is some overlap here between things scripture assumes. For example, God hates sin and as a righteous God, it must be punished. Although believing God hates isn't mentioned as a requirement for salvation, it logically follows, or else from what are we being saved? Why are we repenting if God doesn't hate our sinfulness?

True Christians are Trinitarian and thus worship the Creator as He has revealed Himself, Triune.

Nothing on your lists matters without worshipping God as Triune.

Period.

You don't need to know very much.

Jesus preached in it the most simple terms that -

As you put away your sins for real, you begin to understand.

"Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand"

I think that's the minimum belief.

I was baptised into the Anglican church and taught at a Girl's Grammar Anglican school and taught by nuns at a convent school and confirmed into the Anglican church...I would think u need to be baptised to be a Christian too.

If anyone knew how to attain eternal life, it would be Jesus himself... right? So what, upon being asked this very question, did Jesus say was the bare minimum?

Jesus said to follow the commandments. Then he said to give away all of your possessions and "follow him". Jesus said nothing about belief (because obviously you can't believe that Jesus died for your sins before he even did so), nor did he speak of faith.

John 3:16-17 might help you. Working your way to heaven is exceeding God in your heart, to receive eternal life you must believe in Jesus. Remember Jesus taught the people of Israel things their eyes and ears were blocked from understanding. So the message was for everyone who believes and those who believe in what was to come in His life. Death and resurrection.

Why is that when someone asks what is the gospel? Most of the people here use one bible verse with no explanation? I had made a thread about it, seems that most of our commission skills in the church is lacking greatly. Do we need to send evangelist to teach us how to preach the gospel? See I once was an unbeliever and the people I thought who knew about the bible didn't tell me anything about the bible in depth. It was like yea John 3:16 or Romans 10:9 or something. C'mon church. I had to literally find out by an evangelist what the gospel meant I guess.

Showing me another bible reference that contradicts Jesus' words doesn't clarify the issue, but rather muddies it. I know that in the book of John, Jesus make plenty of declarations that belief in him will earn eternal life. These things are *only* found in John... the "I am" declarations, the public admission of Godly origins, etc. In the other gospels, Jesus tries to keep it a secret, which would explain why he doesn't tell people to "believe in him". Nonetheless, even if he did say that belief would earn you eternal life (and I agree that he did, in the book of John), that still doesn't explain why he gave this answer about following the commandments that I referenced above.
