He basically said that for all the good it does to quote the Bible to someone who does not believe in the Bible, you might as well be quoting anything else, even as silly a book as Harry Potter.

Heck, no! I get along well with most women/girls here, but there are a couple that bust my boiler.
I get what he said, but faith doesn't come from hearing Harry Potter. And that's the difference between the Bible and Harry Potter (or other books) regardless of someone's current beliefs. So while I comprehend what he was saying, it was still incorrect.
Are you a mind reader? You never know when one will change his mind. You don't throw your pearls to pigs immediately but you give him a chance first if he is worthy.
Actually, the Bible never said that faith came from hearing the word of God. It said that faith comes from hearing, period. And since it is a truth that we humans will have faith in whatever it is that we hear, it is imperative that we make sure it is the word of God that we study and absorb.
Someone who has no intention of ever wanting to study or hear the word of God, is not suddenly and magically going to develop faith in God because we spout verses at them that they deny and don't want to hear. This belief that the "words" have some magical properties, just because someone's ear drums are vibrated by the modulation frequency of speaking them is the very basis of the Bibliolatry so many Christians get hung-up on.
It also says in the bible that the Word of God is not return void whether the person is an atheist or not.
Still the word of God should be said like the seeds should be scattered regardless of where it falls, whether on healthy soil, pavement or thorny rocks. You will never know the status of one's heart by outside appearance.
I agree with that. But, for an unbeliever who doesn't want to hear any Bible stuff, we will get a lot farther by including and associating Bible with things they already accept and see validity in.
You do realize that "not returning void" does not necessarily mean they will accept it... it also means that they might just as vividly reject everything they heard.
