Hey Everyone,

I'm visiting some friends, and one of them just plopped a big trap in front of me -- a large jar of peanut M&M's. Since they are one of my favorite candies, I've been trying to keep myself busy with things like doing dishes, etc., to keep from snacking.

However, when I do partake of such foods, I often eat them in a certain "color" order first -- usually least favorite colors (brown, yellow, orange) first, then leaving my favorite colors for last (green, blue, red.)

I know it sounds a little batty (you all should be used to that by now!), but for some reason, it's just something I've always done. If I get a holiday mix, such as for Halloween, I'll do the same thing with the colors that are given (I eat the brown ones first, then the orange, then the green, then the purple.)

I guess it acts as some sort of OCD sorting/relaxation game for me... And I don't do this with all brightly colored rainbow foods, as I try to limit them and M&M's are about the only ones I'll choose to "spend" the calories on.

How about you?

When encountered with these kinds of foods:

1. Do you feel a need to sort them out by color/flavor/shape (if applicable?)

2. Do you eat them in a certain order (least favorite to favorite or vice versa?)

3. Does it still matter if it's something that all tastes the same? (I realize a bowl of peanut M&M's all taste alike, but for some reason, I feel a need to sort them anyway.)

4. Do you do this only for foods that have different flavors?

I'm curious to see if I'm the only one who partakes in this rather strange, but yet somehow oddly calming ritual!! :geek::LOL::cool:

All Peanut M&M's are good M&M's, but...
I start with the brown ones also. I mean, there's no brown in a rainbow so out they go, or rather in they go because I'm not throwing out any Peanut M&M's.
Then I alternate between the ends of the rainbow and end up with only the yellow ones left, because I have to have balance in my life. And it works out because the yellow ones are obviously the 'best.'

Interesting...I'm not a fan of multicoloured lollies, but if offered them, I would just eat one at a time and couldn't finish a whole pack by myself.

Not sure I go by colour so much as what flavour that colour represented.

Green is either lime, peppermint, or apple.
Purple is grape
Orange is orange
Yellow is lemon or pineapple
Brown is usually cola
Red is raspberry or strawberry
Blue is blueberry

I think with the pick n mix lollies, or chocolates, I def go for my favourites, dark chocolate first, then milk, and I don't touch the white because it's too sweet for me.
Peppermint or lime might also be first.

The Mackintosh lollies, if you ever had them in a lolly scramble, I would never go for the red ones (coconut) and the yellow harrogate ones. What is harrogate anyway? I think it's meant to be some kind of butterscotch, butter being yellow.

If was bored and had to sort them, I would just put them in rainbow order. It's easier that way.

Prawn crackers, I'd go with the pink ones first. I don't know, I just think the pink ones are the most likely to be the prawniest. (Even though they all taste the same)

Update:

Since the jar of M&M's on the counter is gigantic (the kind you get at Costco) and meant for the entire family, naturally I'm not pouring them all out and arranging them by color (which I likely WOULD do if I were at home and they were all mine.)

So instead, I've been using a spoon to scoop out "the ones I want", which happen to be in all my favorite colors (red, blue, green.) It's the reverse of what I normally do, as I'm picking out all my favorite colors first, rather than by saving them for last.

My friend happened to notice that the top several layers of the jar has been plagued by certain colors (for some reason, there are hardly any brown in this jar,) and asked me if I had some kind of grudge against yellow and orange!!

Dang it!

I was trying to be careful, but obviously, I have been caught!!🥺😇😝

Don't forget to stir!

You are a veteran pot stirrer. You forgot to stir this particular jar?

I think the bananas as clouds are a nice touch

What do you eat first?

I think I would go for the pineapple. With toothpicks of course.

LOL!!

As much as it pains me to have to agree with The Faraway Cat over ANYTHING, even I have to admit he made an excellent point.

HOWEVER.

I was thinking about it and, part of being a lifelong professional pot-stirrer is that in order to get to the professional level, people have to notice that the pot has been stirred. If I had shaken the jar and mixed around all the M&M's, no one would have noticed, thereby leaving me at the mere level of an amateur, and we can't be having any of that!

So in this case, the best way to stir the pot -- was to actually leave the pot (jar) unstirred (unshaken) -- and let the orange and yellow M&M's build up until someone noticed (and most importantly, said something about it!!

Any pot-stirrer worth her salt knows that the entire reason one even stirs a pot is to get someone to holler! 😁

My friend is also well-pronounced in dealing with pot-stirrers., being a bit of one herself. She turned the jar upside-down (as if to say I was now cut off from them) -- and specifically left out two YELLOW M&M's -- just to see if I'd eat them. I told her I felt like a rat in a maze. My once-familiar setting and routine had now been DRASTICALLY changed, and I was obviously being put to the test.

To which... I promptly turned the jar right side up, opened the lid, swept the two offending yellow candies back into the jar, then defiantly set out the PROPER colors -- blue and green (as there were very few red left) -- and ate them right in front of her.

Yes, it's a wonder she puts up with me 😎.

You'd think she'd have given up by now, but she's been doing so since we were 5 years old -- and for some reason, keeps inviting me back for more. 😇

I don't eat much multicoulored candy (or lollies as we call them in nz) I realised, but other food -real food - like a stirfry, noodles or rice that is multicoloured I think it would be too much hassle to sort back into colours after it's cooked.

Or a salad. Fruit salad or otherwise. Pizza.

The only thing I do is, if there is prawns or shrimp in fried rice, I make sure I get the helping that includes them first. I just love prawns. My most favourite food is expensive giant prawns i.e Lobster or crayfish. When I go to yum cha, I always make sure I get the har gow. (prawn dumplings) before it's all gone.
If it's something like sweet and sour pork, I go after the pineapple.

I've heard of people with autism or is it OCD who can't stand clashing colours or things out of order. So they do a lot of colour sorting.

I think I only do that with 1000 piece jigsaw puzzles when trying to complete them.

Some people sort books by colour, but I'm not one of them. so they have all the spines in the same colours on the shelves. This makes it harder for librarians to find books! I think it's just pleasing for people who can't or don't know how to read. We're constantly labelling books with stickers and colour coding ourselves, but books don't automatically come sorted alphabetically or by subject. Thats what the Dewey Decimal system was for, which is something some librarians hate. But when you have 1000s and 1000s of books, they need to be in some kind of universal order.

I don't eat books, well not literally, but I do devour them. I am a voracious...reader.

This does not apply to my bookshelves at home btw. I just put them on the shelf, most often by size, so they fit. If they are many of one subject, I put them together, like cookbooks in the kitchen, and gardening books.

People also have TBR (to be read) piles, some say their's are like Jenga.

I remember when I used to go the cinema back in the day, and instead of already packaged lollies that were all the same (like m&ms, skittles and jellybeans) you had pick n' mix lollies, that you could grab a scoop of this and a scoop of that, and then they'd weigh them for you and you'd just pay by weight.
They were mostly gummy lollies or ones in wrappers, but some might have been hard ones. That and freshly popped popcorn was the reason for going to the cinema, and if the movie was boring, you'd at least have snacks, so you don't feel you wasted money on a ticket. But now its just so expensive and they don't have those candy bins anymore, some don't even have fresh popcorn. Its cheaper to bring your own, so you have to hide your snacks in a handbag or in your pockets if you want to have 'outside food' in the cinema. If you eating in the dark, you have no time to sort lollies into colours or flavours anyway.

On OCD
It's a bit weird that it's called a disorder when you are actually trying to bring order to your life. Or candy.

People now do things like tidy up like Marie Kondo to spark joy in their life. She wrote a book called the Magic of Tidying up. And its now famous and been translated into many languages, so having OCD isn't a bad thing, it can be channelled profitably.

Maybe the default is to be messy and chaotic?

Yes, I feel the desire to sort out colorful treats. I think I only do this with the ones that have different flavors though. The thing that I like to sort out is fruity-fun marshmallows. I know it's not the best thing to be eating, but sometimes the craving hits. I like the green the most.

I also like to sort out Bottle Caps. I like the root beer the most and then the cola second most.

I think I've posted this before, but I also sometimes like to spell out things with my Bottle Caps lol...

All I know is that I am addicted to these candies.

Normally, when eating something like Starbursts, I save the red ones for last. With these candies, they are all so good that it doesn't matter.

Back from a road trip. I wanted to buy gummy green spearmint leaves to eat in the car, but the gas station didn't have any, so ended up buying jet planes instead.

I eat the green ones first, but I know I have to eat a variety and save some to share with my sister and not eat ALL the green ones.

I completely agree.

For anyone who likes gumdrop-type candies, these are the bomb!! They have a better flavor than any jelly candy I've ever tried.

I first discovered them when a store I worked at special-ordered them to add to fruit baskets. I didn't try to buy them myself because it would have had to have been in large quantities.

After that job, I've never been able to find them again except online -- until I found a local store last year that also carries them in bulk.

However, they're pricey compared to other candies (they come individually wrapped, which adds to the cost,) so I only buy them as a special treat now and then.

Which is good for my wallet and blood sugar levels, but quite frustrating for the part of my personality that could easily down a bagful in one sitting! :D

They are very pricey. I first had one a few years back. They were in a basket in someone's office at work, and they were free for the taking. I only took a couple, but I have eaten a lot more since then. They might be my most favorite candy, and all of the colors/flavors taste good. I can't stop eating them once I get started.

This is all @seoulsearch's fault 😂 After responding to this thread last Monday, I started thinking about Skittles. I rarely eat Skittles, but I began to have cravings. I gave in yesterday and headed to a nearby store. Of course, I had to separate the colors out. It's a must! I personally like the purple ones the best myself, while @YouOnlyLiveTwice likes the red ones the most...
