Oh, the word you use that most speaks of how God works with us in our dreams is 'use.' God may , or, not, speak to you voicedly, like Paul, but regardless of that, God USES dreams to help us get through our life.

God USES everything, though Green. Just because God uses something doesn't mean that it's from Him.

In the context of this thread, I didn't intend to argue against God using dreams. Or even argue God giving dreams. Simply against God sending foretelling dreams like those that at least the OP and one other have believed to be from Him.

From what I have seen biblically and from experience, when God sends a foretelling dream it is at the level of the "light stopping you in your path and booming voice of God directing"; I don't see that level of supernatural intervention in the examples so noted.

ACTS 2:17

Excellent selection.

And would you like the merlot or the cabernet sauvignon with that ? :D
+---+
Maybe snackers would want to try this on for size:

Grape vines:cabernet sauvignon - Picture of wine grapes and leaves

--gorilla glue on the green leaf and then pick off a few clusters and gorilla them on there too

LOL, Mr. Green :D. Snackers would look funny with grapes for hair, wouldn't he? I'll keep that in mind.......

And, I would just like to say, that although I am very careful before telling anyone that I thought that a particular dream (theirs OR mine) was from God, I am equally careful before telling them that I thought it wasn't. "Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good" (1 Thessalonians 5:20 & 21). Dreams can definitely have meaning, even ones that are foretelling. I had one of those once. The meaning was "fix this about your life, so THIS doesn't happen". It scared me, but I was obedient, and my walk with Christ has been stronger ever since :).

So, please be very careful before telling anyone that they did OR didn't hear from God, no matter the method He may have used. Some of the more hard-headed among us may need to hear the booming voice, but I HOPE I'm more sensitive than that, and I think most of us are. That's why He speaks in a still, small voice. If it was always heart-stoppingly obvious that we were hearing from God, where would the faith element be? As Pop-clickity-click said, We see through a glass, darkly. But then, face-to face..........:) God Bless.

But your dream was a warning, not a foretelling.

You are missing the point.

The point is that weather or not the two dreams were from God is nearly impossible to say for absolute certain. So, either way, we have to be careful what we tell people. Our words matter, and discouraging someone from the truth isn't much different from encouraging them in a lie. Sooooooo.............Be careful. Despise not prophesyings, but prove all things. :)

Nope, I just think you're wrong... As previously stated, I would never trust only my heart to determine the truthfulness of anything.

Define prove: Demonstrate the truth or existence of (something) by evidence or argument.

1) The Bible provides examples of foretelling dreams
2) For each example, of a foretelling dream the following is true
a) God was exceedingly clear in its meaning
b) God used them for things with massive impact on the entire world.(though I guess it could be argued that the impact wasn't always clear at the time)

So, to demonstrate(prove) the truth of these foretelling dreams being Godly in origin, or at all trustworthy, we would either have to see a very convincing argument that God's MO has changed, or at a minimum, evidence would have to be presented that there was no doubt that it was God (ie in the dream God says "I am God" or the angel says "I am a messenger from God") and that the intention of the dream is absolutely clear. Additional evidence of the impact of this future would further prove the truthfulness.

I don't see any of this, thus it is not proven; per your scripture, why should I have any qualms about saying if it was or wasn't from God (which, for the record, I haven't done).

Hi all, just interested in some points of view.

15 years ago, as a young new-born christian I asked God to reveal my wife to me in a dream. He did, in a powerful dream and then later in an open vision interpreting that dream (a few weeks later).

My question is (for those that actually believe that God speaks to His people today in these ways): do you think in showing me this person in a dream, that it is subject to change based on my choices? i.e if i chose a certain path that was possibly not in line with Gods will for a certain period of time, would or could the dream no longer apply now?

I do believe that at any point in a persons life that they can "get right with God" and be exposed to His perfect will, but in showing me this person, would you say that He knew the choices that I would make and in that factored it in and revealed this person based on that knowledge, or that because of my choices this opportunity could have been forfeited and now Gods best for me, as I pursue Him in a more pure way, would be different from the original design?

Cool question huh? :)
Fifteen years ago he showed you your wife?.....

Did God forget to mark her calender?

Did he give you a name or face that you could look up on google?

Nope, I just think you're wrong... As previously stated, I would never trust only my heart to determine the truthfulness of anything.

Nor would I. If I followed only my heart, I would probably be a basket-case, or a cumbay-a singing Unitarian, who only believes in being "good". The heart is deceitful. That's why I don't follow my heart; I follow Jesus, and the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Define prove: Demonstrate the truth or existence of (something) by evidence or argument.
By your definition of "prove", it would be impossible to prove a prophesy until after it's fulfilled; what good is it then? By "prove", I think it's referring to what Paul spoke of in I Corinthians 14:28. "Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge". Don't immediately accept something as prophetic, just because someone says it is (not that you would). skepticism can be good, but don't quench the Spirit.

1) The Bible provides examples of foretelling dreams
2) For each example, of a foretelling dream the following is true
a) God was exceedingly clear in its meaning

I disagree. Joseph's sheaves of grain dream wasn't exceedingly clear at the time. Nor was the skinny cow/fat cow dream, except that God revealed the meaning to Joseph. I'm sure there are other examples.
Plus, if God used a dream to tell Melhinzedeb that He was going to have a good goat harvest, would THAT have made it into the bible? Probably not. The ones that made it into the Bible are noteworthy for a reason.

I don't see any of this, thus it is not proven; per your scripture, why should I have any qualms about saying if it was or wasn't from God (which, for the record, I haven't done).
You should have qualms about it because you haven't asked God if they were from Him or not. Plus, as you previously stated, you have no personal experience on the matter.

Snackersmommy, you are preaching to the choir with me. I have such a fine relationship with God that when things are going wrong, unpeaceful, or, even, attacking (from Satan) God shows up. Countless times, when I have been really in the dumps for something something happens. And, it is hard to explain in words, but I will try to explain so lightnin' and deej and all the c.c. world can understand better what dreams mean to me.

I don't like to have to untreasure my sunken thoughts like this , but I will unearth a dream I had recently....

Part of my work is dealing with precious metals and I have a considerable amount stored and I was cashing it in all 2011 , until September. At that time I stopped because part of my work involves dealing with merchandise and I received a nice lot of merchandise to sell. So, for the past two months, I have been strictly focusing on merchandise work and not precious metal work.

Anyway, the market for gold, copper, etc. metals has been very volatile (prices fluctuating between high prices and low in short amounts time) . Now, this is important to me, that I am being smart with the wealth God has given me. I could care less, too, if it all was stolen or whatever. I ask for God to protect it + have it in locked storage camera security. I also pray for the blood of Christ protection over my stuff, that is great peace of mind too and God's honored my asking too because I have a lot of nice stuff in the open and it never gets stolen more than little stuff. All God? You bet. Prayer!

Anyway, I recently watched the gold price drop to 1600s from 1800s and that was clue for me to SELL !
Well, I was on the verge of selling my metals , probably the next day, and, didn't want to, for 2 reasons:

1) I was in the middle of merchandise selling and switching to metals would be difficult to do quickly.
2) I was selling timely merchandise and selling it quickly was important.

So, what happened. I had a dream, that blacks and whites and yellows and reds would eat from the same plates. I had a dream, that inequality of OH, WAIT, sorry , that wasn't my dream :D

I had a dream that told me to Hoooooold On For One More Day. Thinngs would gooooo my way. No, not really, that was Wilson-Phillips that had that dream , although when I was crying in college because I was told my summer job at a major daily was gone because of telling the boss of the whole newspaper she looked nice in her 'faded yellow dress,' THAT SONG was playing in my pick up as I cried big tear drops the size of Snackers. :(

Anyway, Yeah, the consternation feeling of selling my metals or not was greeted with distinct MEANING in a dream not to sell.

Soooooo, that said, Lightning, you can believe whatever you want , but I choose to believe this was ONE MORE instance of God guiding me :).

And, snackersmom even more so had a dream harder to disprove because her dream came at a time that warned/foretold (does it matter if it was one or the other?) her of impending doom, IF NO, JUST KIDDING! I don't have a clue of what her dream was, but she knows and , truly, really, deej, and, lightnin', that is all she will ever need to know.

I will warn you two though. Lest you want to have a millstone tied around your neck and tossed seaward, I would really get it through your obvious very thick skulls that encouraging people in any way, shape, or, form to have a situation they see from God STRONG that you choose to MITIGATE, don't.

I encourage you to go read the purity ring thread too , because I list a couple verses related to the 'millstone. God speaking more than your heart will become heavy IF you cause a 'little one' to sin. So, snackersmom is not a little one nor is I nor is anyone else , like Lifeliker, but I personally would not want to cause a 'big one' to stumble too . Being serious, no of my green smiley face although I do put it kinda funny don't I?

But, Yeah, deej, lightnin', whether a dream is true or not someone dreams is DEBATEABLE, hey, even, if an angel saves you from death after a car wreck does NOT prove you WILL go to Heaven after you die, you MUST DO WHAT? BELIEVE.

SO, DREAMS, they, as I said earlier, by humans BEING FROM GOD is a FAITH thing and part of your personal relationship with Christ which He wants with each one of His sheep.

You can choose to believe your dreams help your life come true or not, but I would be very, very, VERY careful in telling others their dreams are NOT from God.

The Lord leads, I pray my words , though cutting, help you deepen your faith in God, lightning, deej, that you see your dreams, and, consequently your lives, guys, in a whole new Light. :)

Nor would I. If I followed only my heart, I would probably be a basket-case, or a cumbay-a singing Unitarian, who only believes in being "good". The heart is deceitful. That's why I don't follow my heart; I follow Jesus, and the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Oh my, a basket case, huh? :)

Hmm, well I was just using the dictionary. I thought that the english words used in translations were chosen for their meanings, not chosen and then given meaning. Do you find an alternate definition? Also, where does your idea that the Spirit can be quenched come from?

I disagree. Joseph's sheaves of grain dream wasn't exceedingly clear at the time. Nor was the skinny cow/fat cow dream, except that God revealed the meaning to Joseph. I'm sure there are other examples.

Hmm, yes I forgot about Jacob's Joseph. Immediately I would mention that I was focusing on examples from the NT, after God's relationship with man changed. However, I doubt you'll accept that argument, since it has already been made. I'll get back to you on this one. As for good old Melhinzedeb, you're just speculating, which truly has been my point all along. As you've nearly admitted, there is nothing to clearly demonstrate that God works the way you are claiming. That sounds an awful lot like ignorant faith to me.

You should have qualms about it because you haven't asked God if they were from Him or not. Plus, as you previously stated, you have no personal experience on the matter.
Exactly, if I am a christian and in seeking truth I have never seen a confirmed example, or experienced an example of God working this way, why should I have any qualms? Throughout this thread, I haven't felt convicted or concerned or unsure.

It is by knowing God, by knowing His nature that we identify that which is not from God.
Would you say that you know God's nature?

I certainly haven't ever had any dreams or visions from God.

From what I have seen biblically and from experience, when God sends a foretelling dream it is at the level of the "light stopping you in your path and booming voice of God directing"; I don't see that level of supernatural intervention in the examples so noted.

Was she hot?

As promised... some more about this. As mentioned before, personally I see a clear distinction between the OT and the NT on this topic. But, if we ignore that difference, there is still more.

Skinny Cow/Fat Cow - I already addressed these types of dreams back a few posts. Essentially, God works through His chosen. In those times, it was the israelites. As such, it fell to an israelite to interpret the dream. But in those cases, God DID provide someone to interpret it. Several times, in fact, God did this, the interpretation was absolutely clear. Josephs "street cred" was already built up. He ended up 4 for 4 interpreting dreams. I don't know any people with a reputation like that today. And I have grown up in the church, with many many christian friends. Not saying such a person doesn't exist today, but I haven't seen one.

Grain/Celestial Objects - God had given Joseph a unique gift. God's direct interaction with Joseph seems to have allowed him to understand immediately what the dream meant. It appears that he probably didn't really believe it, but he understood what it was saying. Whether he knew it was from God or not, I couldn't really say. Since later he acknowledges that his interpretations of dreams are from God, not himself, I would think that he would have also recognized God's hand in his own dreams. But that is admittedly just speculation.

Would you say that you know God's nature?
You bet. Romans 1:20 - For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

But even beyond that, I have experienced love; mighty powerful love. And God's very nature IS love, above and beyond anything else. 1 Corinthians 13:8 - Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

What experience?

See above..."...I am a christian and in seeking truth I have never seen a confirmed example, or experienced an example of God working this way..."

Hmm, well I was just using the dictionary. I thought that the english words used in translations were chosen for their meanings, not chosen and then given meaning. Do you find an alternate definition? Also, where does your idea that the Spirit can be quenched come from?
It comes from I Thessalonians 5:19-21 "Quench not the Spirit. Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good". It's impossible to know exactly what Paul meant by "prove", but as I mentioned, it's good to have prophetic words judged by others with the same gift, and this would include prophetic dreams. But, I don't expect you to accept that. Whatevahhhh

Hmm, yes I forgot about Jacob's Joseph. Immediately I would mention that I was focusing on examples from the NT, after God's relationship with man changed. However, I doubt you'll accept that argument, since it has already been made. I'll get back to you on this one. I have refrained from expressing my opinion about your level of faith; I would have appreciated it if you had extended the same courtesy to me. Alas, it was too much to hope for. There isn't any way for me to make you know the things I know, or to have experienced the things I have experienced. Unless it happens to you personally, you won't believe, and I'm totally fine with that. I only commented because you were trying to dissuade others. I honestly don't care if you ever personally believe, nor do I have any hope of changing your mind. It's entirely possible that God will NEVER speak to you through a dream, because you're the kind of guy who would need to hear the booming voice or have a life-altering experience for God to get your attention.

Exactly, if I am a christian and in seeking truth I have never seen a confirmed example, or experienced an example of God working this way, why should I have any qualms? Throughout this thread, I haven't felt convicted or concerned or unsure.
Just because you haven't experienced it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen; you are clearly leaning on your own understanding. I haven't personally seen anyone get transported by the Lord's Spirit like Philip was after baptizing the Ethiopian eunuch, but I certainly wouldn't be one to say that God wouldn't do it nowadays, because I don't know that He wouldn't.

lightnin', you said God can use our dreams, you just don't believe God 'foretells' dreams. I just don't get this.
And what does knowing God's nature have to do with God revealing dreams?

I believe our dreams can provide direction for our lives, and, like snackmom said, she has had a foretelling dream that strengthened her walk with Christ.

Don't believe her. So what?
Why do you have to try and convince her the dream came from her heart, not the Holy Spirit(God's helper for us given us per Jesus saying it when Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist?

Doesn't look like you read what I said, but I said don't cause others to doubt their revelation from God, and, yes, dreams fit in that category, as well as visions and ANY other way God chooses to speak to us, through a car accident, or ANY way God chooses to wake us up, humble us, ANY means.

Any questions, maybe your best tact at this point is praying to God for answers why you are not getting to be guided in your life by God through your dreams. You probably are being guided too, but, like Snackmom said, '.you haven't asked God if they were from Him or not.'

It's nothing, lightnin' to get upset about but you can not win an argument if if someone's dreams are from God or from 'their heart' as you put it because you didn't have that person's dreams.

And, keep in mind, different faiths speak differently of God, whether your Lutheran, catholic, Pentecostal, will influence your belief of different doctrine and workings of God. I know my church faith is Assembly Of God and we believe in tongues and the Holy Spirit. But there are other faiths, like , I think, Nazarene, that low-key the ability of the Holy Spirit to influence your life.

You have now. Hello. (waves)

Grain/Celestial Objects - God had given Joseph a unique gift. God's direct interaction with Joseph seems to have allowed him to understand immediately what the dream meant.
Yep, that's how it happens. It's also a good idea to double-check with headquarters before delivering the interpretation, but it has always been confirmed to be what I knew immediately as soon as I heard it.

Of course He loves us. So, why wouldn't He give meaningful dreams, even ones that are foretelling, to His children? He has numbered the hairs on our heads, why not tell us about something in the future, if He's so inclined? it's not like it's difficult for Him.

I really don't have any interest in debating you further, because you're not going to change my mind, and I seriously doubt that I'll change yours. Nevertheless, keep it up if you want to further confirm to me that you don't really know what you're talking about when it comes to meaningful dreams. But, I can't promise that I'll respond again; it's getting kind of boring talking to a brick wall. Just sayin'.

Guys, stop fighting. :( God talks to everyone differently, alright? I'm sure there is a bible verse that says this. I can't remember it, but my mom brought it to my attention one day when we had a conversation about it.

For some he'll speak one way, and for others another way. God knows everyone hears him differently and he knows how to reach us all in customized ways. For some that might include dreams. For some it might not.

I don't see why it has to be a big battle of "I'm right!" "You're wrong!"

=(

No, I don't think so, Relena, noble idea, but, I , for one, see lightnin' bullet point what Snackers said. Then he calculatedly shot down her faith in God's revelation of a dream helping her future . That is NOT acceptable. Is it?

And, for the record, read just above where I was trying to end this, kidding with snackersmommy about Snackers hairdo. I was fine ending this , he wasn't, as he went on to directly say Snackersmom was wrong (you are wrong, were his three words to her saying a dream was foretold to her by God) . Then, proceeded later to say she had 'ignorant faith.'

No, far from over conversation, unless lightnin' chooses to he like socualartist and will not reply respectfully to my posts.

Maybe you are upset lightnin' that I told you to get it 'through your obviously thick skull' (you and djloudness) that your judging others faith revelation by God, including, yes, dreams is not something you want to do. God doesn't want you to do it.

Yet, after I said that the very next thing you do is attack Snackersmom's faith .

The being right or wrong is not at issue, Relena, at least it should not be. Dreams from God speaking to us is between God and the dreamer. Believe it or not. Your choice. The issue is attacking someone's faith and we should not ATTACK each other's ways that God speaks to us, through scripture, through aufldible, as Kooper heard a voice (God's, or not, does it really matter?) that told him 'dont do it' when suicidal thoughts cropped up inside him.

Bottom line is, as I see it, as Christians we should not break each other down for ANYTHING related directly to signs, visions, dreams God gives an individual. Ok, so you don't believe, fine. Let

it

go.

Of course it's not acceptable. But the more people argue with him, the more he'll keep shooting them down. I don't see how arguing is going to fix anything at this rate.

I agree. It hurts me to see this happening. But sometimes there's not much you can do about it. You can't change somebody's mind on a forum argument. If you keep posting, they'll just keep saying more of what they're saying.
