Agape love is a choice and sometimes it is better to love someone how they need to be loved vs how they want to be.

Jesus told her to sin no more.
John 4

4 Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John— [SUP]2 [/SUP]although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. [SUP]3 [/SUP]So he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee.
[SUP]4 [/SUP]Now he had to go through Samaria. [SUP]5 [/SUP]So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. [SUP]6 [/SUP]Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.
[SUP]7 [/SUP]When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” [SUP]8 [/SUP](His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)
[SUP]9 [/SUP]The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.[SUP][a][/SUP])
[SUP]10 [/SUP]Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”
[SUP]11 [/SUP]“Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? [SUP]12 [/SUP]Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”
[SUP]13 [/SUP]Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, [SUP]14 [/SUP]but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
[SUP]15 [/SUP]The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
[SUP]16 [/SUP]He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
[SUP]17 [/SUP]“I have no husband,” she replied.
Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. [SUP]18 [/SUP]The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”
[SUP]19 [/SUP]“Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet. [SUP]20 [/SUP]Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”
[SUP]21 [/SUP]“Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. [SUP]22 [/SUP]You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. [SUP]23 [/SUP]Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. [SUP]24 [/SUP]God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
[SUP]25 [/SUP]The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
[SUP]26 [/SUP]Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”
[h=3]The Disciples Rejoin Jesus[/h][SUP]27 [/SUP]Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”
[SUP]28 [/SUP]Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, [SUP]29 [/SUP]“Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” [SUP]30 [/SUP]They came out of the town and made their way toward him.
[SUP]31 [/SUP]Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi, eat something.”
[SUP]32 [/SUP]But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”
[SUP]33 [/SUP]Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?”
[SUP]34 [/SUP]“My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. [SUP]35 [/SUP]Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. [SUP]36 [/SUP]Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. [SUP]37 [/SUP]Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true. [SUP]38 [/SUP]I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”
[h=3]Many Samaritans Believe[/h][SUP]39 [/SUP]Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.” [SUP]40 [/SUP]So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. [SUP]41 [/SUP]And because of his words many more became believers.
[SUP]42 [/SUP]They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”

In which verse does Jesus say that Jason?

Jesus told her to sin no more.
Yes, but she was to do so in the strength of grace that he ministered to her by not condemning her. The law had no choice but to condemn her, but Christ came not to condemn but to give life even his own life as a ransom. This is the love of God and the justice of God being meeted out through mercy.

It is interesting that you bring up this example with the woman at the well. She had five husbands and was living with a man who was not her husband. The Lord did this all alone with her, one on one, for the disciples that were with him had gone into the city to buy meat (Jn 4:8). He never exposed her sin to anyone, not even the disciples who did not even ask (v.27) and went beyond her sin to meet her need for the living water of everlasting life. He never said to her to confess or repent of her sin, instead she went into her city and beckoned the men to come and see the the Christ.
Scripture has to be read as a whole. You can't make an entire Theology on certain verses that appear to say only one thing (according to one's thoughts) and ignore the rest of Scripture. Jesus told her that her people do know who they worship. She knew that their was a Messiah who would come that would tell her people all things. So these people were looking to be taught. They needed to learn the right ways of God because they did not even know who they worshipped. So no. Jesus was not giving her the thumbs up that her sin was okay as long she believed on him as the Savior. If Jesus were to do that, then he would be condoning her sin (Which is not possible because Jesus is Holy and righteous).

Mercy is only for those who seek to be penitent and obedient towards God. Jesus defined repentance for us when he said that the Ninevites will rise up in judgment against this generation because they repented at the preaching of Jonah. If we were to look at Jonah chapter 3, we would see that they turned from their wicked ways as a part of their repentance.

You're missing the POINT. The point was and is that Jesus dealt with her in MERCY and COMPASSION.

By the way that is one of the things Jesus REBUKED the Pharisees for NOT DOING

Matthew 23

23"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.

By the way Jesus very clearly ALSO talks about mercy here

Luke 6

[SUP]27 [/SUP]“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, [SUP]28 [/SUP]bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. [SUP]29 [/SUP]If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. [SUP]30 [/SUP]Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. [SUP]31 [/SUP]Do to others as you would have them do to you.
[SUP]32[/SUP]“If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. [SUP]33 [/SUP]And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. [SUP]34 [/SUP]And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. [SUP]35 [/SUP]But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. [SUP]36[/SUP]Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.[SUP]37 [/SUP]“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. [SUP]38 [/SUP]Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

[SUP]39 [/SUP]He also told them this parable: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit? [SUP]40 [/SUP]The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.
[SUP]41[/SUP]
“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? [SUP]42 [/SUP]How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

We know the Lord forgave her because the woman caught in the act adultery was sorry for her sin because the context was Jesus telling her to sin no more. Meaning, he was willing to forgive her, but she could not keep continuing to do that same sin.

It does not make any sense for the Lord to forgive someone who is not seeking forgiveness of their sin.

Where in any of that did Jesus BEAT HER over the head with a verbal TWO BY FOUR? There is not one place in there that He did.

Doesn't scripture tell us that Jesus yoke is heavy and burdensome and that we should throw it around the necks of as many people that we can so that they can pull our plows for us?

What's interesting to me about so many of these posts is how (clearly) schizophrenic believers are (as a whole) about what God's love is and what it means to experience God's love. So I'm going to enter the fray with my own ideas. :)

I think much of our understanding has to do with the lenses (cultural, experiential, gender-based, etc.) we wear when we read and talk about scripture.

For example, involving the issue of mercy. My culture has taught me that we might offer mercy to someone if they are very sorry and they make amends for their bad behavior. So, when I look at the bible, I notice all the places where people were very sorry and they were given mercy. I'm not meaning to ignore, but I really don't seem to notice the verses were people were just extended mercy without any expressed sorrow, OR if I notice those verses, I add a bit to them by telling myself that surely that person did repent, etc.

However, the gospel story itself is a story of mercy given BEFORE it was ever sought. The Lamb was slain before the foundation of the earth. It was God's GO TO plan to offer his Son. His underlying approach was the approach of mercy to be provided before humans even existed to ask for it.

Because MERCY is the very nature of God.

It's also, btw, a superpower. Because when people experience true mercy, it's nearly impossible for us to NOT be sorry and turn from what we did.

Here are some examples of God showing mercy without any indication pre-existing repentance:

God gave clothes to Adam and Eve to wear to cover their shame.
God helped Hagar and Ishmael.
God sent his prophet Nathan to reveal David's actions to David and lead him to repentance.
Jesus told the woman caught in adultery "Neither do I condemn you..."
Jesus gave the woman at the well, "living waters"
Jesus warned Peter that Peter would betray him.
God struck Paul blind so he could understand who God really is.

In addition to these, there are also examples of PEOPLE offering mercy before any repentance is offered. The story of Joseph and his brothers comes to mind here, Hosea and his wife, etc.

Part of what makes God such an amazing God is that he offered us such great mercy "while we were yet sinners."

Where does scripture state that the woman was seeking forgiveness in those verses? You're adding something to the text that the text DOES NOT SAY.

John 8

[SUP]2 [/SUP]At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. [SUP]3 [/SUP]The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group [SUP]4 [/SUP]and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. [SUP]5 [/SUP]In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” [SUP]6 [/SUP]They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.
But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. [SUP]7 [/SUP]When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” [SUP]8 [/SUP]Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
[SUP]9 [/SUP]At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. [SUP]10 [/SUP]Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
[SUP]11 [/SUP]“No one, sir,” she said.
“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

And what about Paul? Did Paul even realize he needed God's mercy on the road to Damascus? Or Paul BELIEVE he was doing God's will? Or did God show Paul mercy BEFORE he repented?

No one is making up any theology, that story of the Samaritan woman at the well was an illustration of how Christ covered her sin and drew her out to respond to the water of life. He did the same for the woman in (Luke 7) who came to Simon's house with the alabaster box of ointment. Read the story Jason and see how love covered her sin, how that she had been forgiven much and how she loved the Lord. Then without a single word of her sin being charged or confessed from her own mouth, she was forgiven (v.48) and her faith saved her (v.50) and she went in peace. She was known to be a sinner but not condemned in any way for the many sins of her life and now she left in peace with a capacity to love much for she was forgiven much.

Nowhere does Jesus say or even imply that.
These are your implications and conclusions concerning how you see this story in the context of your own understanding. The focus is upon the life of Christ and what he had to offer the woman as well as the men of the city. Christ did not make sin the issue nor was he dismissing her sin. He covered her sin and by doing so he drew her to himself so that she could respond to the water of life that he would give to her. The water of life that would spring up would overcome any sin or weakness of the flesh that she had fallen into. His goal for her was to make her see what he had to offer despite her sin. That is how grace and mercy works through the righteousness of God. Mercy deals with the sin by putting it away (propitiation) and grace gives the sinner what they do not deserve (efficacious) all through faith in the person of Christ.

God is Love
Satan thought he had God beat because Love requires both Justice and Mercy.
How can God be both merciful, kind, and forgiving and at the same time just, true and fair to the laws in place?
Justice requires the blood of the sinner, but mercy desires to free them.
Psa_89:14 Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face.
2Sa_8:15 And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people. (David was a man after Gods own heart).
Deu_32:4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.
1Pe_3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
Rev_15:3 And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints.
Ezr_9:9 For we were bondmen; yet our God hath not forsaken us in our bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving…..
Psa_52:8 But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever.
Mic_7:18 Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy.
God set up laws that cause order and love to reign in the universe, (Love God with all your heart and your neighbor as yourself). And the result of transgressing this law is death (to experience the opposite of Love, sin, (1Jn_3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. Jas_1:15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death).
Adam and Eve had a tree as their test. Satan said we don’t need this law, and challenged God. How was God going to be just to the laws, and merciful to those that rebelled?
If God had of destroyed the sinners He would have been Just in doing that. But the seeds of doubt where planted and the keeping of the law would have been out of fear (forced love). But if God had of just forgiven all sinners and said that there is no penalty to sin then the law would have been powerless and useless because God didn’t follow the rules He set (No order).

But God had a plan that was 100% Just and obedient to the law and 100% merciful and forgiving to the sinners.
God choose to meet the requirements of the law for us, and pay our debt (Justice), and then offer us full forgivness (Mercy). That is Love. Very expensive forgiveness.

2Co_8:9 For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.
Rom_5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
So we don’t need to do anything to get Gods love, To get His mercy and earn His forgiveness, God is Love.
As far as repentence goes.. It means to turn from your evil ways and surrender to God anything that is separating you from Him.
This was the measage of Elijah and John the Baptist and it is the message for today
Mat_3:2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Mat_4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Luk_17:3 Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.
Luk_17:4 And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.

By you turning back to God you can receive the forgiveness He has ready to give.

But.... your not really explaining the context to me, though. If you did, then I missed your post that did so. However, if you did not post anything in regards to a reply back with some verses to prove your case, then you can say "pluck verses out of context" until the cows come home and it does not mean anything unless you actually prove your case with Scripture.

Also, I am sorry. It is just silly to say that God is going to forgive you if you are not sorry. If that was the case, then everyone would be saved.
