I like how everybody use that 1 john verse....

But in 1 john 2... He says I write this to you so that you may not sin.... So it must be possible not to sin.

Then he says but "if" you do sin... Not "when" you sin but if if if..... So must be a possibilities for you not to sin.
1 John 1:5-10
5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.

6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.
Yes I think it's important to keep the context.

Note that John's first thought in this passage is about walking in light vs. walking in darkness...

Point 1: We can't claim we're followers of God and yet still do evil. We're lying if we do.
Point 2: IF we (really) walk in light Christ's blood purifies us FROM ALL sin.

The word "purified" means "cleansed; extracted; removed; no longer present."

Then John's next thought focuses directly on sin, supporting his first thought...

Point 3: We can't claim to have no sin TO CLEANSE (in context), and if we do claim that we're lying.
Point 4: IF we confess our sins THAT WE ACKNOWLEDGE WE HAVE (in context), those sins are purified.

The word "purified" means "cleansed; extracted; removed; no longer present."

So John is pointing out the process of "walking in light" that can't be shortcut:

A) We acknowledge our sin
B) We confess those sins
C) Those sins are REMOVED from us...forever.

John is not saying from his letter that one who says they don't continue to sin are liars. He isn't saying that. In context, he's saying anyone who say they've *never* sinned CAN'T POSSIBLY follow this process. They can't even START it, and so still have their sins upon them.

Now what Simiel is getting at - that others are misunderstanding - is the stage when a believer has reached Step C after truly walking in the light (and remaining in that light through nothing less than the power of God's Holy Spirit). That believer acknowledges their sin, that believer has confessed their sin, that believer is given the Holy Spirit to walk in righteousness (and not sin anymore), so that believer's sins are no longer present upon them. Purified.

John then continues his points, but from a different perspective...

1 John 2
2 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

3 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands.

4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.

5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.
^Christ was sinless. He did not sin. We must not sin if we claim to live in him...one day at a time...one sin at a time, until God completes Christ's image in us. This is the mystery of God (Colossians 1:27).

John continues...
7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. 8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.

9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness.

10 Anyone who [TRULY] loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is NOTHING in them to make them stumble. 11 But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.

So if we read John's full passage in context, John is actually proving a believer is to live a life of sinlessness, contrary to what most claim he's saying from the verse often taken out of context.

We cannot perfect ourselves to live a sinless life for if we could Jesus would not of had to come.

The Bible says if you are led of the Spirit you will not fulfill the desires of the flesh and if you are born of God you cannot sin.

If you are led of the Spirit then you will act like Jesus and be sinless at the time you are led of the Spirit.

But if we are led of the Spirit and are abstaining from sin we still have the capability to go back to the flesh and sin.God does not twist our arm to live for Him.

If we could not overcome sin then we would always be fleshy in which we could not please God,so it is obvious we can overcome sin but that is by the Holy Spirit.

If one follows the Spirit in his thoughts and actions? That takes some practices and encouragement from one another.
If we keep saying we can't be perfect and we can't do it is denying what Paul said we can do all things in Christ.
Guess it's time to have our minds renewed by the Spirit.

I'm not saying you can't alter your thought, we must use self control for sure but I highly doubt you will be SINLESS, there is a difference. You might say, do or think 1 thing per day compared to the person next to you who might sin 5 times per day. Your no better than him trust me.

No way! That is not what 1 John says. I would love for you to share why you believe it's not possible to live a sin free life as Jesus did after you are reborn.
Because we are human If you actually see yourself as perfect and without sin thats pretty arrogent and you have to humble yourself.

There's nothing wrong with this, if you think you are living sin free. Your self control must be Soooo good. I can't imagine anyone like this but hey. If that's what you think.

Me personally, I don't sin in my actions but my thoughts get the better of me.
I still curse in my mind, have lustful thoughts, still want more than what I need etc etc
It's not until I stop and think hey hang on a minute that was a wrong way of thinking would God be happy with me cursing bla bla because of what they said (for eg)
Then I realize no he wouldn't so I say sorry etc.
Its why I constantly praise God because it's trying to teach us to depend on God or if we don't we may fall back into our sinful ways. And I think it's just that, imagine our live s as a training session before we go to heaven. He wants us to be perfect.

Pretty clever if you ask me.

I find it shocking to see there are ppl who claim to be perfect and without sin, The scriptures say if anyone claims to be without sin the truth is not in him. Are we to totally disregard this passage? Is this not proof we cannot be perfect? I just dont understand its very suprising
Does the scripture imply one would continue to sin no matter what?
If one continues to read 1 John one would see that love would make us perfect, not in the sense that love replaces the law but rather love for God shall move us to obey His commands and not sin.

Has anyone made it yet?????? ;)
That's a great question...but often times the answer is considered from an "all or none" point of view. What I mean is...

...well take weight loss for instance; most people who are overweight consider the task of weight loss next to impossible because they're often looking at how much TOTAL weight they have to lose (as if all at once), instead of what little weight they must lose today. We often look at solutions to problems as "sprints" instead of marathons; so conditioned to gauge by the instantaneous result instead of the gradual result. But scriptures even uses the analogy that this is an endurance race we run.

So the best way to answer this question is to first ask it this way:

Has anyone made it yet, today? Was anyone sinless, today?

"Have no care for tomorrow because tomorrow will take care of itself." All we have is today. Did you truly love your neighbor today? Were you obedient to God so far, today?

Right now (as I type this at 2:42pm) and so far I have not sinned...today. I had a late Friday so I awoke at around 10:30am and have been sitting here resting on the day that God has made, catching up on posts from CC (since I haven't been on for more than a week); reading scripture. I've had no evil thoughts against anyone in my home or on here.

I still have a few hours to go before today is over, but again so far I am sinless against God.

The question is can one make it without sinning for one day...just one day? If the answer is "yes" then that means one can do it again tomorrow. But if the answer is "no" then there's no hope for any of us and what Christ went through was in vain, because his power isn't sufficient enough to overcome this flesh even for 12hrs.

"This calls for patient endurance of the saints." Run the race one day at a time.

Practice makes perfect. Keep it going and before you know it you are there. We should keep encouraging each other rather than discouraging.

If you were perfect then you would be Jesus. I don't know about you but I prefer only one Jesus.

Of course, we should definitely encourage one another but still you have to be humble enough to admit you are a sinner and repent when you have. God doesn't like disobedience, he is our father we need to be sorry when we do something. He will reward you when you do.

I never changed a quote from scripture, KJV1611, but am trying to give the proper meaning from the context that comes BEFORE and AFTER the verse so often misinterpreted. The context is "the hypothetical person who believes they don't have to confess any sins in the process of being purified"...that's the context of John's verse in discussion.

Here, let's try this angle...

Question: When you confess your sins to God and he purifies it (per 1 John 1), do you still have that sin upon you? Or is it gone forever?

Possibly Enoch, however, Enoch had a very close relationship with God as the bible tells us he walked with God and God took him, Enoch, to heaven without seeing death so I'd say Enoch made it but only by walking with God meaning the Holy Spirit/Jesus/God were abiding in Enoch. And they could no longer live apart from each other... What an example Enoch gave us.

We have the same spirit yes but it's still not the same. Jesus is God's son!

Ok ask tor self these questions.

1. Do I still have impure thoughts
2. Do I say things that might be bad
3. Do I do anything in my actions that may be bad

If you can honestly say no to these then you must be a saint! Lol

I know you might be able to be less sinful than some but surely not 100% sinless. Come on??

The letter to the Hebrews said He had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that He might make atonement for the sins of the people because He himself suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted.
The question we have to ask ourselves is, is He able to help? How far is He able to help?
