I'm confused... If water baptism is necessary, then certainly Jesus would have made that clear. So my question is, where and when did the Hebrew tradition of water baptism originate?
You can find a bit of a study Here on baptism in water...

Nothing. Everything.

Do you believe Jesus truly needed to be baptized in His own name?
Yes......... to full fill His assignment by the Father.
Not for the reason you and I need baptism though.

We have to many man made writings of baptism and that is the reason for so many opinions.......... which did not exist before the 1960's..........We need to stick with God's word concerning baptism;

Baptism is Required

Peter 3: 21.... whereunto even baptism doth also now save us...

John 3:5 .......Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Acts 2;38-....Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Acts 22;16... And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

Galations 3:26...... For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

KJV Marrk 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

KJV Matthew 3:14... But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15. Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now, for thus it becometh us to fulfil all rightesousness. Then He suffered Him.

KJV Matthew 28:19..... Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:.

Acts 8:12-18: But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized.

Acts 19:4 And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.”

John 3; 22 After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.
23 And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.

Quote from Billy Graham that is note worthy;
....Also, to clarify I did not say remission of sin takes place at repentance. Scripture makes it clear that it occurs upon obedience to water baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus. Each is a step of faith, along with receiving the Holy Ghost, in the process of one's spiritual rebirth

.."Paul explains the doctrinal significance of what occurs when one is baptized. His explanation is found in his letter to those who had already been obedient to the command.

Paul tells the Roman Christians what actually occurred when they were/are baptized; they were baptized into His death. Being buried with Jesus into His death resulted in their sin being destroyed.

Even though Paul explains this concept, the NEW AGE RELIGION TEACHING is......... that water baptism is nothing other than a mere public display.......... And that is so far removed from the truth.

......If you were baptized for some reason other than for forgiveness of sins in order to be ...born again... then you do not have salvation and you are still lost. Who are you going to follow: God or man? As our Lord warns us in Matthew 15:14, "And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a ditch." Don't allow someone, who has added to and taken away from God's word, to lead you. Open your eyes and read God's word for yourself. Those who have added to and taken away from God's word will be lost. If you continue to follow them, then you too will be lost.

Keep in mind that Satan knows if he can continue to perpetuate that lie ...... he can keep people from entering the kingdom of God. Thus He has proven scripture which says ...in the end times there will be ...great delusions.....they are here.

Conclusion....teaching that baptism is not necessary is violation of Rev. 22;19.... And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. 20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. (Also two other books of the Bible).

The Greek word baptizo means immersed. So the Ark was "baptized" or immersed in water all the time that it rained. But since it floated, he was "saved" by water. Had there been no water, the Ark would have been useless. But before he was "saved" by water Noah was justified by grace through faith, by believing God, and became a "preacher of righteousness". Evidently his whole family was deemed to be righteous, even though later there was one son who did evil.

The son who committed evil is an example of how a person can ...fall away..backslide ...from righteousness . Which is rejected by new age religion folks. ....saying OSAS...born again forever...which is false doctrine.

Noah's boat was immersed in water? .......not really applicable ...the boat would have to have been under water to meet the use of that word...normally....as relates to baptism.
Baptism requires the body being immersed ...completely under water.

Baptism was not applicable in Noah's era...OT.
Christ brought the NT into place requiring baptism.

You can find a bit of a study Here on baptism in water...
That is an interesting study...
So, if I'm reading correctly, baptism by water is a necessary outward display of obedience.
Which is fine, but it still doesn't answer my question...

Let me be more specific;
If water baptism is necessary, then certainly Jesus would have made that point clear; He would not have left us with such a deadly argument.
So my question is, where and when did the Hebrew tradition of water baptism originate?
Did it eventually evolve into "Law" like everything else?
Did the baptism of Jesus simply fulfill prophecy and the "law"?
I've never been baptized, and honestly, I've never felt compelled... To me it feels more like a devotion to a church than to God.
You see, my problem is with "law", and there seems to be just as many arguments for "water baptism" as against. Most of these arguments seem to revolve around the difference between water and spirit. However, it is universally agreed that Christ promised an indwelling of the Spirit, without which we cannot discern the wisdom of God's word; Without which, we probably wouldn't even bother to try.

I'm actually a big fan of discipline lol, being the military type. But it seems to me that, if the practice of "water baptism" was necessary, there would be evidence of it. God would have ordained it and taught us precisely how. Or perhaps, if we are all to be priests and judges in His kingdom, God would have made the "ritual cleansing" an obvious requirement.

I'm non-denominational... I want to believe whole-heartedly. I don't need to pledge my faith to any particular church and go to the river just to get wet. I want the infallible Truth.

The question shouldn't be if baptism is "necessary", or "required"; but rather, is water baptism "in order to receive" or "because of" remission of sins? . Is your obedience in order to receive your salvation or because of your salvation?

Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord
Does that sound to anybody like he is saying "your sins will be blotted out when you are refreshed under the water"?

Good question...let's be guided by scriptures;

Not just water which is not intended/inferred by Bible teachings. But, with repentance and water baptism combined are we ..."born again"..

Dissing on the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is DARK AGE Religion.

This scripture is the reason why I wonder... Did the ritual tradition become "law"?
In order for the Jews to accept the Gentiles, did they have to be "baptized" according to Jewish "Law"? If so, how did the "law" originate? If the Gentiles already proved that they received the Spirit, then what was the point of baptism by water?
“Did the ritual tradition become "law"?”

your making it into a ritual and tradition that’s not what scripture says our baptism. Baptism is Gods ordained act of faith for remission of sins. If we want to know what baptism is for we can just see that God sent John to baptize for remission of sins. It’s not a ritual or tradition it’s a command of the lord that offers a promise baptism has a purpose plainly stated

“John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. And there went out unto him all the land of Judæa, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭1:4-5‬ ‭KJV‬‬

this is what baptisms purpose is

“baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.”

this is baptisms purpose after the cross

“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins,

and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭2:38-39‬ ‭KJV‬‬

there’s nothing in scripture anywhere to suggest baptism is a ritual or meaningless or that it is for any other purpose but remission of sins.

it’s a command of God that offers remission of sins to those who hear and believe what he’s saying

“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved;

but he that believeth not shall be damned.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭16:15-16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

It’s not law nor is it a ritual without significance what gives it meaning is God said it’s for remission of sins people who hear and believe this get baptized because they believe it. It’s an act of faith designed by God to prepare the world for Jesus and the gospel.

it’s just what God said to do this isn’t a ritual it’s a command of Jesus Christ. It’s basic foundational faith “ I believe Jesus died for my sins do I’m getting baptized for remission of my sins in his name “

I choose the gospel , I choose the name of Jesus Christ upon my life I believe the gospel so therefore my faith will follow
The gospel ect

it’s faith God said “ get baptized for remission of your sins in Jesus name and I’ll remit your sins “

anyone who believes what he said and does it he’s going to always keep his end of faith . It isn’t faith to hear about baptism for remission of sins designed by God to have our sins remitted , and not accept what he’s saying about it if we do that part and accept what he says we can start understanding the impact it has on our lives tangibly

“Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭6:3‬ ‭

“in whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.”
‭‭Colossians‬ ‭2:11-12‬ ‭

“For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭3:27, 29‬ ‭

if we make baptism into a ritual it erases all the meaning and significance Paul and the apostles explain baptism has for the baptized believer there’s a lot in the epistles explaining the deep meanings of baptism the effects of baptism

we can understand thy ear things but we have to let scripture have the final say

Gosh, I recognize Scripture, you know.

I doubt I attributed Scripture to you. Really!

It is the inescapable conclusion you draw that I attribute to you.
honestly no I was saying your argument is that I’m saying this stuff about baptism. But it’s actually the scriotire that says it that was my point

what do you make of these amazing explanations by Paul regarding what. Baptism means ? And why can’t you and I both agree that this is on scriptire clearly ?

Let’s say just for the sake of argument that baptism is “for the remission of sins “ like the scripture says and I agree with if we just for s moment say ok baptism is for the remission of sins then look at how this makes sense and we can better understand thy inner workings of baptism

“Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death:

that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin.”

‭‭Romans‬ ‭6:3-7‬ ‭KJV‬‬

For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.”

‭‭Romans‬ ‭6:14-18‬ ‭KJV‬

we can agree I’m sure Paul is talking about baptism he explaining remission of sins there how sin no longer has dominion over the person baptized into christs death . Let’s see if this actually makes sense and if Paul touches on the subject matter anymore

As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.

And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: in whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.”

‭‭Colossians‬ ‭2:6-12‬ ‭KJV‬

what is Paul saying here about baptism and remission of sins ? Why is he making baptism such an important part of his letters ? Why is he explaining e inner workings of removal Of sin from the flesh ? ( remission ) and connecting it to baptism ?

all I’m getting at sister is if we accept what scripture says baptism is a big important subject in the New Testament scripture it has to do with Jesus death for our sins , and his rising up for justification.

Make the argument baptism isn’t important or isn’t as important as the scripture says it is is just not something I expected to hear from you because I do actually know and respect your understanding of scripture. It’s surprising to see you reject what’s so prevalent and plain

my point was not that you are crediting me with scripture , but you are saying I’m saying hear thkngs about baptism but I’m just sharing what’s in scriotire about baptism with you was why I had said that it says what it says and my poor is baptism is well explained with just the scripture alone and it doesn’t come down to the conclusion that baptism is irrelevant or not for Christians or ore cross only ect none of those thoughts about baptism are in scripture but what I’m saying to you “baptism is an act of faith that offers remission of sins “ is throughout scripture plainly and thoroughly it even explains the goes and whys and what’s of baptism

One member said recently:

... if Jesus Christ was NOT born again by water and Spirit, then how
was He going to fulfill being the First Born of many brethren?

Which quite frankly on the face of it looks like a denial of Jesus's divinity, which I know this person
does not do, and yet... people do not seem to think through the things they say/believe.
When we think/believe we have part in our Salvation we are not elevating ourselves to a higher level we are bring The whole Trinity down to human places.

Think about baptisms process a believer is lowered beneath the water submerged and “ buried “ in the water and then they are lifted up from this burial and raised up again.

this is so , that it should relate to Jesus death , burial , and resurrection.

“Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”
Romans 6

“in whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;”
‭‭Colossians‬ ‭2:11-13‬ ‭

baptism is about the unity of the believer and Jesus death and resurrection. The answers and meaning to all Our questions about all we wonder about is in scripture specifically the gospel and epistles of the apostles it’s the revelation of what these things mean like baptism

another benefit of baptism into death is becoming dead to the law that has imputed sin to every person and holds us all Guilty

“Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭3:19-20‬ ‭

when we get baptized into christs death for our sins this happens

“Know ye not, brethren, how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? ….Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ;

that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭7:1, 4‬ ‭

we get baptized because we choose to believe and join ourselves with Jesus Christ ( that’s why it’s done in his name ) so that his death becomes our death for sin with him and our life becomes his life through the righteousness of faith .

it’s a decision we make because we heard and believed about this

“for this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭26:28‬ ‭KJV‬‬

so we believe and choose to do this enjoining our own self of our own free will now that we have heard the truth from Jesus the lord

“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins,

and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

…Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭2:38, 41‬ ‭

it’s faith to hear what God has said about something like remission of sins and believe and then do from that belief what he said is for remission of sin. It will always be true and he will
Always honor whatever he said or whatever condition he set in his own word

And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: in whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.” ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭2:6-12‬ ‭KJV‬

what is Paul saying here about baptism and remission of sins ? Why is he making baptism such an important part of his letters ? Why is he explaining e inner workings of removal Of sin from the flesh ? ( remission ) and connecting it to baptism ?

all I’m getting at sister is if we accept what scripture says baptism is a big important subject in the New Testament scripture it has to do with Jesus death for our sins , and his rising up for justification.

I do not believe I have ever said anything to the effect that water baptism is not important, and I would thank you not to spread such falsehoods about me. This has been done before by those who lack understanding of what is actually being said: taking away, adding to, doing the very things they say we should not do, such as Peldom, who is like a broken record not just with his posts, but with his repeatedly disagreeing with Scripture, and then acting as if it is inconceivable that any Christian should disagree with Scripture. It gets to the point where if it were not so pathetic it would be hilarious how blind he is to his own obvious folly and hypocrisy, while he mounts a mask of mock solicitude through which he falsely accuse others of the very things he does.

Saying what you have simply shows that you miss a distinction that is perceived by others.

Water is not mentioned in any of the Scriptures you posted above. To me, that is prevalent and plain. Whereas I see water being related to the Holy Spirit of God, and the greatest man of all time telling us that Jesus, Who is greater still than John by far, so much so that John is unworthy even to untie the strap of His sandal, would baptize us with the Holy Spirit, and with fire. That is what cleanses us, and Scripture plainly states that, also. We are told of this cleansing long before the NT; I have posted the relevant verses from Ezekiel quite a few times in these recent discussions on baptism. Likewise there are a plethora of Scriptures that attest to our justification and salvation being by faith alone, in Christ alone, Who Himself fulfilled all righteousness. That water is implied or inferred in some verses I do not deny either, something some of those who adhere to a contrary view refuse to do in admitting that water is not mentioned in many of the verses they believe bolster their case.

I realize people believe things because they think they are right. How some arrive at their conclusions is questionable.

Paul tells the Roman Christians what actually occurred when they were/are baptized; they were baptized into His death. Being buried with Jesus into His death resulted in their sin being destroyed.
What about the context of Romans (OR Colossians) makes you believe that it refers to water baptism?
Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; (ACTS3)
again, does that sound like water to you?
Think about baptisms process a believer is lowered beneath the water submerged and “ buried “ in the water and then they are lifted up from this burial and raised up again.
Who get buried in water? Was Jesus buried in water? He wasn't even buried in dirt. His body was wrapped in linen and put in a tomb.
“in whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: buried with him in baptism
Is water baptism the circumcision made without hands? No- it's from the Spirit.
“Know ye not, brethren, how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? ….Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ;

that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭7:1, 4‬ ‭
Did you become the part of the body and his bride by being in water, or by his spirit being in you? Are you his bride through water? Do you walk in the spirit, mortifying the deeds of the flesh through the power of water?
it’s faith to hear what God has said about something like remission of sins and believe and then do from that belief what he said is for remission of sin.
Is it "in order to receive" remission of sin, or "because of" remission of sin? Simply believing one and not the other without justification isn't faith; it's laziness.

Both Romans 6 and Colossians 2 are about being dead to sin by walking in the spirit- I see nothing to do with water anywhere there at all.
