Actually as a genuine Spirit-filled Pentecostal speaking in tongues Christian I am directly taught by the Spirit of truth who dwells
within me.
And I also enjoy being taught much by the gifts of prophecy at our meetings wherein God does speak to his church.
Glad to hear that sir.
I too am a Spirit-filled tongue talking, WOF sword wielding, heaven healing, demon dumping/casting out/off, power punching with the word/promises of God through the name of Jesus, son of God.
I personally, have also received revelation knowledge, many many times, and revelations of people's personal lives, including knowing what they are thinking and feeling inside, not through other people's revelations, and have heard the voice of God once and smaller voices, many other times.
My wife goes beyond that, where she prophesies and sees or has visions of people's pass, present, and future.
I know God does new things, but I have yet to hear or have Him move outside His word.
When my wife prophesies, a scripture verse usually comes with it.
As for me, without fail, God has always told or given me a scripture verse with an explanation of the revelation. Always! Even telling me, what to me was, preposterous and frightening, at times, and things hard to believe. But each time I doubted or questioned what I heard, He would give or tell me yet another verse with the same revelation with a brief explanation.
God can be very persuasive and hard to argue against or doubt, when He wants us to know some things.
We are told to test or try the spirits, which includes the one's we hear from, because most of us don't always know who or what is talking to us. But the longer we walk with God and the closer our walk is with Him, the better we become at knowing who or what is doing the talking.
There are times when we hear from our own hidden man, the heart, or from our own spirit man and think it was God speaking to us.
Most of the time, it sounds like I am talking to myself, as though it's my own voice speaking to me.
I personally know people who said, "God said...", when they were way off and would later have to retract what they said, or make an excuse as to why they changed their mind or what they did, or why a situation took place when they said it wouldn't or the other way around.
This coming from the people saying the same thing as us. That being, they are tongue talking, Spirit filled Christians, and the like.
The simple truth is, it wasn't God in the first place.
Which isn't to say they are not of God, but it could be an indication of sin in their life or they need to seek God longer concerning the source of the voice they are hearing from. However, I would question their status, if they are in error constantly or continually missing the mark.
I Personally judge others who say they are Christian, based on my knowledge and understanding of the word of God.
One who is not of God, though they may think they are, will not be able to, or are incapable of, and literally CANNOT receive the whole truth or even some parts of some truths, which equates to error or a lie. And what they have received, they will speak, for, out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks, or in this case, they write.
So my stance on hearing from God is, revelation is good, but the word of God is a more sure word of prophecy, and make sure the word we hear doesn't negate, made to be a lie, or supersede the written word of God.
And the point of my first post, saying his argument was weak, was simply the fact that the guy didn't use scripture to backup what he said.
You might think I'm being a hypocrite at this point, but if you were to ask me to backup the things I said with scripture, I would be able to and would do so.
The word of God MUST be our foundation on which our house of faith stands. Without it as our solid rock, upon which we stand, we WILL fall.
