I would say that it is definitely ok for a Christian to feel uneasy about people celebrating Halloween. Getting to far into the celebration...
But for your kids or grandkids to dress up as mickey mouse and knock on peoples doors to get candy... I am not uneasy about that in the slightest. Its just a fun thing for kids to do.
Now when grown people do it... that starts to get weird. For me. But what does the bible say?
Romans 14:22-23
22 Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth.
23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.
You got me thinking, maybe the way the US does Halloween is different to the UK and I hate it.
Over here they dress up as witches, zombies, ghosts and often wear scary masks or put on
make up dipicting blood, wounds, horror, twisted scary faces. The trick or treat thing seems to
be a US import as it never happened when I was young it started off maybe 30 years ago.
Children and teens go around not just knocking but hammering on doors running in and
out of gardens leaving gates open. Sometimes using it as an excuse to cause trouble (older
ones do anyway). They seem to think that if people don't give them a treat, they play a trick
on you!
Some householders get right into it and decorate their houses with pumpkins, witches,
scary masks, bats etc. I saw one house with caution signs about zombies.
Instead of children going to people they know. They go to everyone including complete
strsngers. That is just so dangerous. The younger ones usually have a parent with them but some
of the older ones often just go in groups and cause a lot of intimidation and problems.
I tie our garden gate up, otherwise we get a non stop stream of door knockers all night long.
Its really not fair to elderly or vunerable householders. Someone was telling me they had a
sick baby bad they just got them to sleep when the kids started door knocking.
Im not sure if the US do it any different but that is how if is in the UK and I hate it.
I hate the way it gives permission for gangs of kids to create mayhem and trash your
garden running over plants on their way in and out. Not to mention the general nuisance.
I hate the way it teaches chiidren that evil is fun and that to scare people is fun.
As I say maybe the way it is done in the US is different. It would be interesting to know.
Over here Halloween is just a plain nuisance.
