400 years of language changes for KJV and NIV. This is why I detest the KJV. Too many people don't understand the dynamics of language over 400 years.

Spiritual things are Spiritually discerned. Regardless what version one reads prayer, fasting and heeding to what is read is the answer through the Spirit. Getting a dictionary wouldn't hurt either...

Notice the quotes. Paul is not saying this, it was a common saying among the elite of the day. They were quoting Plato and and Paul is quoting the Corinthians who lived in "sin city" as Corinth was known. They were saying immorality was permissible. Paul of course set them straight.

notice the utter lack of "quotations" -- indeed any punctuation whatsoever

even if it is so that Paul is repeating something Plato said, he says it very much as though it is true, and does not contradict that it is true. instead he, speaking by the Holy Spirit, exegetes the comment, explaining how the meta of good and evil still exist for the sinner who has been washed, by the qualification of wisdom. the scripture does not say here that it is false to say all things are lawful for me: it states it as fact, and wisdom raises her voice in the gate.
