Anyone who knows of Billy Sunday knows he was as straight forward as one can get.I visited a church he actually preached in and stood behind the pulpit he preached from. Here was his take on alcohol....

Everyone thinks they can tolerate alcohol.I dont believe the Bible teaches moderation at all. I believe it teaches us to stay away from alcohol. Overeating does not cause someone else to overeat. Though I dont agree with it either. Drinking is a bad testimony esp. to people that have an issue with alcohol. You dont need it.Food you do but not alcohol. Again one does not know they are an alcoholic until they take the first drink. We should not be a stumbling block.
Eating is a bad testimony to those who have an issue with gluttony. Would you recommend that we never eat?

The bible is clear not to polute your body. Alchohol is a polutent to ones body. The bible don't tell you not to drink. However just make sure you not drunk the day Jesus comes back. Back then in Jesus times certain fruits they used for wines, had some sort of alcholic effect on people who drank it. Hence why many were drunk. Wine has good properties for health issues. So again the bible don't tells us not to drink. But tells us to be sober. and sober minded. and not to polute the body. So its down to you, how much alchohol you consume. But Just drink it in moderation and drink it for enjoyment of the drink and not enjoyment to get drunk.
My cousin felt the same way about drinking.Just a little socially couldnt hurt. One Christmas they had guest who brought wine. They drank but didnt get drunk. After Christmas they decided it would be ok to have a bottle of wine for guests or to have a little with their meal. She has three boys under the age of 7.She said it started slowly,a bad day with the kids, hard day at work for her hubby. And before long they were drinking more regularly. One day she suddenly noticed that when they were stressed they would head for the bottle. She knew it was a bad witness to her three boys and she got rid of the wine and said no more drinking.Again wine is something we can live without. Its a bad witness for a Christian to walk into a liquor store. We should not be looking like the world.

And BHT, BHT, preservatives and monosodium glutamate found in bread is health food?

Show me from the Bible and I will believe it, reason with man's reasoning and I am unconvinced.

Now that is not sensible. You have to eat,you do not have to drink alcohol.Shoot Mormons wont even drink caffeine because it is a drug! I dont drink that either because it makes me feel miserable. Dont be a stumbling block. It meat causes my brother to stumble,I dont eat meat.Alcohol has caused a lot of people to stumble.

here are a few scritpures regarding drinking.

1 Corinthians 6:10

Nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

Ephesians 5:18-20

And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Proverbs 20:1

Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.

Galatians 5:21

Envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

1 Corinthians 3:16 & 17, "Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are."

1 Corinthians 6:19, "Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? [SUP]20[/SUP] For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's."

So as you can see there are some and maybe more scriptures regarding drinking alchohol and poluttion of your body. people need to understand about moderation. The bible don't tell you not to drink, just be wise with it.

kaylagrl, I am sorry to hear about your family member's problem with alcohol. but I say this and really ask this to you as a sister in Christ: please do not think that everyone that drinks it will ruin their life and send them to hell. these are untrue thoughts. not everyone who has a computer looks at and gets hooked on porn. not everyone who takes home a pen from work will become a thief. not everyone who drinks will be a alcoholic.

this is an unfair question. a look at someone can lead to lust. so we are not to look at other people??

Of course people are going to look, but as a Christian, we don't look upon a girl or guy in lustful intent.

Do you eat in front of gluttons? I don't, but I do eat. I don't drink alcohol in front of drunkards either but I occasionally drink alcohol.

There is NO Biblical prohibition against drinking alcohol.

Aha, so drunkenness is a sin. I said that already. Gluttony is a sin, but eating a moderate amount is not. Please apply the scripture correctly here.

Drinking is not a sin, its being drunk that leads to sin. Jesus drank wine, so you saying he sinned?

No, I am saying just what you said. Drinking alcohol is not a sin, drunkenness is a sin. Christ drank alcohol but never drank to excess, never got drunk.

To drink alcohol is not sin, it overindulge is.

Gluttony is partaking of too much food OR drink.. which I have done both many times..in my younger, stupider days, of course.. :)

Me too. In fact, I have found that if I eat a sandwich or something of similar consistency just prior to bedtime, I awake with a hangover. I have to cut off eating about three or so hours before retiring.

Yes but it not sin, all it saying is, if you partake in gluttony and drinking it will lead to sin. but its not sin. There are no scriptures saying directly to the word, DO NOT DRINK< Because its a SIN. the bible tells us teh effects of drinking and being gluttony and so on, but it dont tell us its a sin. Of course we all have been there whether its drinking alchohol or being glutton or what ever. thats because of our actions to ignore what God is telling us. Being drunk, or glutton are things that God will not allow us to inherit in heaven, because of the effects they have on us to cause sin. and its sin that don, will not, and will not inherit in heaven, So the bible don't tell us not to drink, but for us to think wise of the quantity.

Oh sure, gluttony is a sin. Gluttony is eating to excess just as drunkenness is drinking to excess. Gluttony and drunkenness are both sins.

I like to have a glass of wine with my dinner, but when I open a bottle, my husband and I first use this wine for communion purposes. We give each other communion with bread. There is nothing more intimate and bonding than a husband and wife sharing the body and blood of Jesus together, handing each other the cup and offering the bread.

I can see the beauty of more families doing this in their home. I only wish we had started this when our children were young and growing up. Something happens in this experience. Anger, bitterness and stress seem to melt away. You do feel a renewal of oneness in Christ and each other.

Grape juice just doesn't have that "warm" taste of God in your mouth as wine does. Yet, if you are against the alcohol, grape juice would do. The focus is on Jesus, after all.

I have been sorry that more churches don't encourage families to take communion together. There would probably be a lot less divorces, teen problems, etc. I don't mean this to supplant the community of believers partaking in communion. Just to do both.

A lot of people who grow older are infirm and can't manage going to church. Some are even young, and sick. And because they don't consider home communion, they really lose out on something that Jesus asked us to do. Their church has made them feel that this is something that only an ordained pastor can give.

Yet, I believe in the priesthood of all believers - and we have all authority to give this sacrament to each other.

Just my take - now to watch the fireworks go off?

I took that first drink about 17 years ago...here I am 17 years later, not an alcoholic. So for the majority of people it's pretty simple.
