Jesus clearly stated that there is NONE GOOD but God.....God inspired the following thoughts and truths....
1. None Good...no not one<--Romans
2. All our righteousnesses are as filthy rags and our iniquities like the wind have taken us away<--Isaiah
3. If we say we have no SIN, we are deceived and the truth is not in us<--1st John
4. There is not a just man upon the earth that does good and sins not<--Ecclesiastes

1Jn 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
Context
1Jn 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
1Jn 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
1Jn 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
1Jn 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1Jn 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
1Jn 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
1Jn 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
1Jn 2:3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
1Jn 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
1Jn 2:5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
1Jn 2:6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
John is writing against the prevalent Gnostic notion that "conduct" does not have to match "profession." The Gnostics made a distinction between...
1. Matter - Base and corrupt.
2. Spirit - Pure and incorruptible.
The Gnostics taught that the physical body (flesh) entrapped the spirit and its virtue (a kind of corruption surrounding the incorruptible). They viewed the physical body as evil in and of itself on the premise that it was made of matter. They taught that salvation was obtained via the means of Gnosis or Knowledge. A soul was to come to a realisation of the abstract nature of their spirit and focus upon this perception in order to be detached from the corrupted physical. An avenue to achieve this was via asceticism, or the renouncing of the physical. It was this kind of philosophical mindset which led to many of the ancient orders where the adherents would indulge in things like flagellation (self whipping), fasting, celibacy and the forsaking of comforts.
It was taught that the flesh itself was manifestly sinful and thus the sheer fact that one existed in a "flesh body" necessitated that one was sinful. Thus the Gnostics would teach that actual deeds were disconnected from the actual spiritual state. John refuted this by saying...
In other words the conduct had to match the profession. When John wrote...
1Jn 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
...the context is in regards to "how we initially approach God" in repentance. John is not teaching, "sin you will and sin you must" nor is he teaching the Gnostic notion that the flesh is sinful. John is simply reasserting what the Bible teaches elsewhere...
Pro 28:13 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but
whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.
Heb 10:22
Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
In other words John is teaching that in order to be cleansed of our sins we have to be completely honest before God. We all have sin to our account for we have all rebelled against God. The Gnostics taught that it was the flesh which sinned not the spirit and thus a Gnostic might claim that they had no sin. John taught that we must WALK in the light and COME CLEAN with God in order to be cleansed of all sin and unrighteousness.
1Jn 1:7 But
if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
1Jn 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
1Jn 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1Jn 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
The Bible Butchers snip 1John 1:8 and use it a a proof text for "sin you will and sin you must." They complete ignore the actual context of the verse and also ignore the other things which John wrote where he connects manifest conduct with authentic Christianity.
1Jn 3:6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
1Jn 3:7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
1Jn 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
1Jn 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
1Jn 3:10
In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
Little children, let no man deceive you. Many are going to try.
