I wonder how many commenting here have actually read through all of the 613 Laws? It might be an eye opener or game changer for some, for many here who profess that it isn't necessary to obey those Laws will be shocked to find out they have been living in obedience to them all their lives. Wow.......... :)

Seriously, might want to read through all of the 613 Laws before commenting too much.
I have...glad I don't have to adhere to them...I would fail the exam

You might be surprised how many of them you have spent your life adhering to, or, at least, I hope so. :) Which is why I actually took the time to go through them one by one and list the ones that I do not believe apply to my walk with Christ.

One example only: Thou shall not have sexual relations with thy mother.

That one right there? Yeah, good idea to obey this one in my opinion.

Oh, ok, one more: Thou shall not murder.

Elin,

I know of several mainstream churches of conservative theology who have found value in observing the appointed times of Lev chapter 23 from a New Testament perspective. Doing so
helps clarify the true significance of much of Jesus' earthly ministry.
So is this where the Hebrew Roots Movement got its impetus?

If I may share my concerns in that regard, on several points, which may seem unusual but, nonetheless, are no less Biblical.

First and foremost, we are taking matters into our own hands, and are devising our own unauthorized
ceremonies in NT worship.
The NT does not view this benignly. . .Paul going so far as to say that practicing OT ceremonies is
turning back to dead, miserable, worldly forms of religion. . .worldly because they do not come from
the new creation (Gal 4:3, 8-11; Col 2:8, 17, 20; Heb 10:1). The NT's view of unauthorized ceremonies
is that they are "will worship" (Col 2:22-23, KJV)--devising our own way of honoring God instead of honoring him only in the way he has prescribed. The NT views all forms of religion outside the NT as worldly and dishonoring to God because they are authorized by man only, not by God. We are to do nothing that dishonors God (1Co 10:31).

We must avoid making Uzzah's mistake of presuming God will be pleased with what seems good to us (2Sa 6:6-7), and we must inquire of God in his word how he would have us honor him (1Chr 15:13). David likewise wanted to build a temple to honor God, but had no warrant from God to do so, and was stopped (2Sa 7:13). God in his word authorizes no other NT rites or ordinances but baptism, the Lord's Supper, anointing with oil (Mk 6:13; Jas 5:14) and laying on of hands (Ac 6:6, 8:18, 13:3; 1Tim 4:14; 2Tim 1:6; Heb 6:2). Each of these ordinances authorized by God is effectual in the believer by the power of the Holy Spirit, which the OT ceremonies are not. NT worship is based in spiritual reality, not in figurative ceremonies.

It is not for us to improve on God's ordinances.
It is one thing to learn about the Jewish ceremonies and their significance regarding the meaning of Christ, but it is quite another thing (disobedience of "will worship") to practice them as ceremonies in our worship.

And then secondly, my concern is that unauthorized ceremonies over time, as is common to man, become a religion of ceremonies rather than a religion of the spiritual realities which they picture.
NT worship is based on and in God's spiritual realities--made effective through faith--of baptism, the Lord's Supper, anointing with oil and laying on of hands. It is not to be based in ineffectual figurative OT ceremonies, no matter how good that may seem to us.

This use of OT ceremonies in worship is both unauthorized and dangerous for the NT church.
It is from the mind of man and authorized by man. . .neither being from God.

Jesus said: Love the Lord your God with all your being and love your neighbor as yourself.

this act of obedience fulfills the law.

we all fall short of this and that is why Christ Jesus our Lord had to suffer and die for us, that we might find life in Him.

Christ be with you always.

The Law is not made for the righteous, but for sinners. (1 Timothy 1.9 I do not understand what the problem is with people not understanding this verse.

Ember I hope you will see this message is not in hate but love. Do you realize that you have already broken the law in God's sight. Don't worry I have too. No matter if someone studies, memorizes, and obeys all of the commandments in the law we will always be guilty of breaking it because when we broke one of them, we were found guilty by God. This is the whole reason Christ died for us. Romans 3:19 says that no one will be declared righteous by the law, but only the knowledge of sin. The New Testament makes it clear that the law is only to show us we are sinners and that we need Christ. It also says that it was a school master until Christ. Everything I'm writing here is in the New Testament so I hope you see that if you disagree you are not disagreeing with me, but you are disagreeing with the New Testament. Test the scripture. The fact is the only way we can live by the requirements of the law is to live by the New Covenant. Folks I'm am not making this up, it is clearly found in scripture. I hope my posts help somebody. Much Love, newlife7

sorry ember I didn't see that you were just responding to someone else post. Paul makes it clear that everyone who wants to live by the law must obey it fully. And that is something only Jesus could do. This is so sad of a thread, so many people if they don't listen to what the New Testament says about the purpose of the law are going to be under God's wrath through out eternity. Ember I am so glad there are people in the world that understand what God is telling us through His word. I know there are others, even on this post, that understand, but never the less your post refreshed me!

The response to the OP title is simple enough. Learn the anwer best from Jesus Christ, from His teaching and His Example.
Let us keep it simple.

If mercy lacks in the law, it is obvious by the actions of Jesus Christ and His teaching that it is not valid. This includes all forms of punishment, for we have not been handed over judgment in this age, no that will come on God's Day, great and glorious. Anyone who points fingers at specific sins, and demands castigation in this age does not yet know how to obey the Law lawfully.
The dietary laws were changed to all things being lawful when received with thanksgiving although Paul preaches not to eat any blood, anything strangled (I belive this includes anythng that died of itself), and anything offered to idols This by no means is demanding you eat anything you simply do not like.

The laws requiring the existence of a Theocracy complete with a King and Levitical priests cannot be followed now, for the earthly Israel has been lost since the Judah-Israel schism, thus we await the actual installation of the Kingdom where we will be perfect and no laws will be necessary, but this is come the Kingdom only.

Changing the law for our convenience to point fingers and castigate in this age is tantamount to reining without the King present, and we all who believe God are only too happy to wait for our King to hand out any privileges we are to have in the Kingdom.

Now, we who believe Jesus Christ are born again by the Holy Spirit, and we pretty much know which law is to be followed by our new nature, although many teach against the law. Teaching against ever the slightest of the laws will cause one to be lightest in the Kingdom though it is not counted by our Lord as damning, it does have big eternal drawbacks, so please do not teach against any laws. God is good all of the time,a nd we must strive to be as He, yet waiting for our true perfection come His Glorious Day, amen...

JaumeJ I hope you do not think that I am saying anything other than what the New Testament says the purpose of the law is for. I also hope that you do not think I am judging anyone who may still be under the school master of the law. I am just trying to help people see what the New Testament says about what the purpose of the law is so that the glorious Gospel will shine. Much Love JaumeJ, newlife7
