Just wondering what happened to the native america land claims now and whether anythings been done for restitution....
In nz theres fhe Waitangi Tribunal and theres grievances that are still being sorted out centuries later, for land that was stolen or taken by force.
Google 'Parihaka'. This is over in a place called Taranaki, I dont know many people that live there, but the population does seem still at odds with each other. Not true in other parts of the country. The english colonialists wanted that land as it was very fertile land. Of course the maoris did not want to give up this land, and they did not want its fertility destroyed! Its a very long story I wont go into here but best read the wiki article.
The govt later apologised gor its shameful actions this did not happen until 2017! Hundreds of years later.
The town I live in was originally maori land, but was traded to Thomas Henderson (now named Henderson) for a ship he had. The maoris didnt have ships in those days so they thought it was a good exchange. The land was mainly kauri forest, so Henderson logged the forest, built a mill, and a town sprung up, later he sold units of it to settlers and they cleared it to grow vineyards and orchards...and then some greedy councillors started pushing the rates up so it got to expensive to make a living from the land and they sold it on to be subdvided for suburbia, and then later, more housing, infill housing, and eventually it will be apartments and highrises,I guess.
However the surrounding forest ranges that didnt get sold actually got protected with a heritage bill because our main source of water comes from there. The only thing is whats remaining of the kauri forest is DYING, because of all the water being diverted, even STOLEN to feed the city. Not to mention the pollution from sewerage and stormwater runoff due to deforestation and roading. And now this water aint free, anyone living here has to pay rates to access this water.
What today city councillors fail to do is consult with maori about stewarding the land because they knew every stream, and every river, every landmark that needed protection.
I go to parts of the north shore fruther from where I live and they are putting up retirement villages everywhere, like billion dollar apartment complexes. The land they are building on is completely DEAD. Some they are cutting into the hillside and that will creating huge drainage issues. Why because they developers have removed all the water permeable top soil to leave hard as rock clay. Most of it used to be lush Kauri forest. Its got completely destroyed to make way for housing. You cannot grow a thing on it, I know cos I see the gardens struggling. Ive worked on many that just have may be a few centimetres of soil and it has no life in it. soil has to be trucked in from elsewhere.
Anyway, whats happening now is the rivers are getting so pollution from the expanding development runoff that last week a call to action was placed to clean it up...but Maori, who steward the land previously would have NEVER let it get so polluted if they'd still owned that land. Its really only the european settlers who have exploited the land for financial gain (ie speculating, buying and selling properties) that has led it to be in such a sad state. proof that love of money is the root of all evil.
When you talk about 'property' are you talking about 'land' or 'housing'...anyway just some of my thoughts.
The maori people did worship a creator God called Rangi 'sky Father'. They may not have known who Jesus was until the missionaries came but they did have a deep spritual sense there was a God almighty and He was like a Father.
So perhaps theres some parallels with the native american experience.
