Wow Dude, go to war over this incident! These clowns represent me and my country. I have no sympathy for them. As far as I am concerned, they got off easy. They should have spent a weekend in a Rio prison. I would also pull their passports. We have too many of these clowns representing us in other countries.

When you are a US citizen traveling in any country, you represent the people of the US and you also are obligated to observe the laws of the country that you are traveling in.
True like the guy who littered in singapore a decade back was publicly caned and no sympathy given by the US govt for him...

or the knuckle head in north korea who ripped a banner down for a souvenir in a hotel and got a life sentence of hard labor and cried like a baby b/c he made a total donkey of himself on TV lol....

Maybe people will one day understand that they actually have real law enforcement in other countries, and you are not going to just get your wrist slapped like you would here in the USA.

Since the Olympics became a cash flow and a cover-up/distraction from what's really going on in the world.

Well that's sort of true, but in 3rd world countries there is massive corruption, for minor infractions you have to pay bribes not worth the crime to get them off your case. Many officers abuse the power they have....if you are foreigner in any country one would be wise not to attract attention at all but I guess lochte and the gang didn't pay attention in olympic social prep class....

You're right about that, even the IOC president was giving a "one-world" speech stumping for globalism....all this group crap is brainwashing the masses to accept globalism and lose their individual national identities.....

Only I don't believe any crime was committed. I believe this is entirely fabricated to extort money. The fact that he wasn't even officially charged with a crime then he most likely never saw a judge. They held his passport and demanded $11,000 to an alleged charity. Funny how the charity was never named or what he allegedly damaged in this restroom. I'm not an attorney but I don't believe this would hold up in court

Anyone who has ever watched Locked Up Abroad knows that when you go to jail in another country, you are in some very deep doo-doo. Remember that guy in Turkey who got a life sentence for a smuggling Hash?.... I suspect most likely he accidentally peed on the floor or something. As I previously mentioned we should cut any and all economic ties with this country... let them know we are not to be trifled with

So does a sovereign country have a right to make laws and enforce them as they determine?
And if they're known to be corrupt, shouldn't a visitor be all the more vigilant in keeping himself out of appearance of impropriety?

I mean, short of being kidnapped and forced to commit a crime, it shouldn't be that difficult to stay out of trouble with the law.

I don't think anyone is championing the wisdom of Ryan Lochte et al.

The individual's relationship to the rule of law and notions of justice is every bit as important as the institution's relationship to these things.

If we go about hammering the swimmers without these other factors in mind, we risk ignoring equal if not greater levels of corruption on the other side of the coin.

Maybe so but I still believe something should be done here. We should not let them get away with this.

Are we assuming the right to tell other countries what laws they can set? These are not human rights violations.

well, I live in Athens , ga., home to uga, mr. lochte's college. the type of behavior that they were accused of happens nightly here. the too much time, too little brains spoiled kids act this way. except that this happened at the Olympics, not a shell station on the atl. highway.
