Gypsy, thank you for the in-depth answers... I'm going to have to seek out a good health food store around here. I am really interested in the idea of mixing my own protein shakes. And how can you tell, exactly, how much protein a person needs?
i also find health and such related subjects fascinating, especially how all these things affect our brain, energy, performance and holistic health. and i've become more intrigued as i've learned how certain, even small things have great impact.

as to protein needs, it depends upon who you ask. after doing my own research, i consider .5 g /lb body weight to be my minimum.

however, i do try to get more, closer to .66-.75g /lb because i feel better at that rate. especially if i'm being really active.

zero pharmaceutical drugs, but several dietary supplements, some of Rx strength

multivitamin/antioxidant blend
calcium/magnesium/mineral supplement
trace mineral supplement
vit D3 - 20K iu
b12 injections
essential fatty acid (EFA) supplement
probiotic/prebiotic
enzyme blend
adaptogen herb blend (rhodiola, holy basil, ginseng, astragalus, cordycep mushrooms)

I avoid B12 (both pills and more painful injections) http://christianchat.com/natural-health-forum/94910-moringa-tree.html

...2. Catherder is absolutely right--I completely forgot to mention OTC (over the counter, no prescription needed) drugs like pain meds, cough syrup, allergy meds, etc. PLEASE BE SURE TO COUNT THOSE AS WELL. I didn't even think about this because I don't take anything in this category, except as a very last resort. I am very sensitive to most meds and even Dayquil knocks me out. I'm allergic to penicillan as well. On the other hand, knowing I am so sensitive has also kept me from trying any kind of illicit drug or even smoking...
hmmmm.....methinks this will be my new signature.

I'm 30, turning 31 this month. If it's Winter, I take Vitamin C tablets reasonably often or Echinacea (liquid or capsule). Garlic/Horseradish etc. capsules are effective for Spring. But if I really need any kind of medication, I always aim for the healthy remedies.

Oh my goodness. Absoluntely?

All I ask is that you please make it look like I know how to spell... at least 50% of the time. :D (Even though I make plenty of blunders in my own writing here.) But c'mon, Cat, at least make me look... semi-literate. ;)

I would also suggest a few amendments... "CatHerder is absolutely... sometimes... sort of... maybe every now and then... kind of around the block... and almost there... " :p

I wish you had put other down. When I'm sick, I might take extra vitamins, and almost always Zyrtec type meds, since it's usually allergies or colds that make me sick. Otherwise, I don't usually take them because I generally forget to.

Hmm, now that I think about it, maybe I shouldn't order those expensive gummy veggie/fruit vitamins since I might just waste those.

The doctor had me on Wellbutrin and lithium for years (after trying out a bunch of other things, including Prozac) to try to "even out" my moods and spells of severe depression. He said I was like a line that went straight across... but had severe dips ("unipolar".)

I eventually just quit cold turkey (stopped going to the doctor altogether) because I didn't think any of it was doing any good. I know it probably wasn't the best thing to do medically, but I honestly didn't really see much difference.

I will say, however, that getting out of bad relationships was one of the best, though admittedly lonely and only partial, cures I've ever come across...

Hey Singles,

I'm just curious as to how much medication is keeping us all going. I am most certainly NOT trying to make fun of anyone's medical issues here--almost all of us have something going on--but because I have an ever-growing interest in health and nutrition, I thought this would be an interesting poll.

I didn't know what the best way would be to do it so there are actually 3 different sections in the poll: one part that asks your age, one part that asks how many prescription pills you take per day, and one that asks how many non-prescription pills and supplements you take each day.

The inspiration for this thread is a book I read by a Christian doctor who recommended such-and-such supplements and multiple times the amount of certain vitamins (for example, 1000 mg per day vs. 300 mg) to the point where I felt like I should just give up food and consume bottles of pills.

I myself take 7 pills per day, 3 of which are prescription, and I'm hoping to get it down to 2 by my annual check-up. The reason for the extra pills is because you read so much about vitamin/nutritional deficiencies that the next thing you know... Along with your regular meds, you're also taking Vitamin D, calcium, fish oil (only mercury-free fish, mind you!), probiotics (love those LIVE ACTIVE CULTURES... always makes me think of sea monkeys,) and ginko leaf to improve your memory (so that you will actually REMEMBER to take all those pills).

I'm not asking anyone to divulge exactly what they take or what condition they take it for, but feel free to share such things as:

1. What things have you tried taking that were and were not helpful? Do you believe any of the supplements offered on the market are very helpful or just a waste of money? What things do you think are absolutely necessary for your own health and which ones are a waste of time and money? Are there any essentials you would never stop taking?

2. How much of your grocery budget (percentage or a number) is spent on meds and other pills? What kinds of sacrifices, if any, do you need in order to make sure you have the medications and supplements you need?

3. Have you tried special nutritional/vitamin powders, shakes, etc., and do you think they help? What differences have you noticed when you've taken such things or stopped taking them?

4. What do you think of juicing? What is your juicing routine? (Replacing meals with juices or using them as an addition to your diet?) Is it worth all the extra time, and what juicers are the easiest to use and clean?

Now remember, the poll isn't perfect because in order to split it up into sections, there are some options that are NOT actually options but headings that are used to try to separate the different questions I'm trying to ask. I didn't know how to do it any other way and would greatly appreciate any advice/examples for the future.

The poll is multiple choice and anonymous so no one will see the answers you choose.

All this pondering has left me a little fatigued... I'm thinking a nice, fruity gummi bear vitamin and a chocolate Ensure would be a great way to wrap things up, along with a handful of Sea Monkeys... Er... I mean, Live, Active Probiotic Cultures, I suppose. (What exactly, would be the other choices? Cultures that are just plain dead, resurrected, or Zombified?)

Here's to a happy, blessed, and healthy you. :)
Thank God I don't have to take any prescribed medications. I DO have to take vitamins/supplements, however. The things I take are in lower doses than what you get off the shelf at Walmart (seriously...one pill of vitamin B1 has like, a couple thousand milligrams? Ridiculous. Too much for anyone to take at once.), but it's higher quality and it's easier to adjust the amount of it I take. I usually take 13-18 or 18+ (well, that's how many pills I swallow. That's NOT how many different vitamins/supplements I'm on. Right now I'm only taking 4 or 5 different vitamins/supplements). Or that's what my homeopathic doc wants me to take. Right now, I'm all sorts of messed up, but even when my body's gone through all these changes, the only thing that hasn't changed is the amount of calcium I need a day. I take 5 tablets of calcium before I go to bed (as I said...it's in a much lower dose than what you get off the shelf at Walmart. I take a little less than 250 mg of calcium.) and not only does it help with my insomnia, it prevents me from getting leg/foot cramps at night.

Gingko helps the memory. I would take my gingko if only I could remember where I left the bottle.

Setting a daily alarm on your phone as reminder should help. *poke

If you have an option to see a therapist ask about EMDR. It is currently the best, and very effective, treatment for PTSD. You'd have to find a licensed therapist for it, but i've heard of it being effective after a few treatments. It can vary, of course, the human mind doesn't function in a set pattern from one person to the next. There are no guarantees with the brain. But it's definitely worth looking into if you have that option.
