We are living in a time of moral confusion and our generation’s immorality is reflected in many of today’s styles.

Today’s fashion industry has little regards for modesty and its products often projects looks that are inappropriate for someone who wants to mirror Christ.

The marvelous grace of God in our hearts compels us to reflect His holiness in the part of our being that other people see. When a person becomes a Christian, his experience changes every facet of his life- not just the inward person but the outward person as well.

The Bible instructs us to wear modest clothing that is, clothing with godly appearance. Of course, our outward appearance cannot substitute for inward holiness. Adam and Eve covered themselves with fig leaves after they sinned, but God found their efforts inadequate. By making clothing of animals skins for them, He confirmed that they indeed needed modest clothing, but He also revealed that the holiness in appearance must be associated with God’s provision for our sins. Only by the death of Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, do we obtain the righteousness of God that we seek to reflect outwardly.

God instructed Israel’s high priest to wear holy garments, “for he represented a holy God" (Exodus 28:2). God also ordered the priests to wear clothing that covered their nakedness and forbad elevated altars upon which priests would walk and thereby expose their nakedness (Exodus 20:26; 28:42).

Deuteronomy 22:5 enunciates the moral principle of a clear distinction between male and female in outward appearance: one sex must not wear styles of clothing associated with the other. It states, "The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so [are] abomination unto the LORD thy God."

Proverbs 7:10 speaks of a woman with “the attire of an harlot.” Clearly, certain garments are associated with sin and are not suitable for godly people to wear.

The principle that God wants His people to reflect His holiness applies to the New Testament Church (Peter 1:15-16). We are called to be living epistles read of all people, declaring to the world God’s holy nature and His abiding presence (II Corinthians 3:3).

Our outward appearance is one way in which we are unspoken witness of the transforming power of Christ.

I Timothy 2:9 admonishes “that women adorn themselves in modest apparel with shamedfacedness and sobriety, not with broided hair, gold, or pearls, or costly array." I Peter 3:3 gives similar instructions.

I Corinthians 11: 16 teaches that a woman should have a long hair, for it is her glory, and that a man should not have a long hair. A person’s hair serves as an important visible symbol of his or her submission to God’s plan of authority and as a distinguishing mark between the sexes.

Revelation 16:15 uses clothing as a symbol to instruct the church to stay close to God: “Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.

Clearly, God puts emphasis on the outward appearance of a person.To an extent, clothing reflects the condition of the heart, and it sends a message to others about a person’s values.

Advocating modesty of dress and outward dedication does not mean advocation of salvation by works.
Wearing godly dress is not a meritorious work to earn salvation rather it is a response to the saving grace of God. The blood of Jesus is our only righteousness. Our salvation comes from God, never from our good works. To think that we could earn His marvelous grace by adhering to dress codes would be a terrible mistake.

But to accept the grace of God and then be indifferent to Christ’s commandment for the holy living would discredit His mercy. If the church preaches Christ and His saving grace without teaching biblical guidelines to live by, it leaves people open to confusion and failure. Deliberate and continous disobedience to Gods Word will lead to the loss of saving faith.

Who can view the Cross without wanting to comform to Christ? Who would want to continue his or her old sinful patterns of living when Jesus Christ died to bring deliverance from those sins? When people comprehend His holiness, they desire to become holy.

While it is true that the blood of Jesus cleanses from all sins, it is also true that genuine love for Him restrains a person from presuming upon His marvelous grace.

In our success-oriented society no one considers it odd if a company requires its employees to comform to a dress code. Why then should a church that teaches neatness and modesty for the purpose of honoring the holiness of God be considered cultish, restrictive, or legalistic?

If we are to honor God in our hearts, it is consistent to honor Him with an outward dedication. I John 2:15 intructs us, “Love not the world”: surely then, we would be foolish to mirror wordly values in our appearance.


Adhering to a modest godly standard of dress and conduct offers protection from the surge of immorality that plagues our generation. Clothes and appearance transmit nonverbal signals. Christians who verbalize godliness but at the same time nonverbally declare sensuality and ungodliness destroy the effectiveness of their gospel witness.

The primary purpose of many fashion designs is to exalt the ego, attract undue attention to the flesh, stir desires, and ignite passion in others, thereby appealing to the lust of flesh, the lust of eyes, and the pride of life, which the Bible condemns (I John2:16). If we are honor to the holiness of God, we must not dress in such styles and with such motives.

We must not naively ignore the complex causes of immorality and marital infidelity, but neither should we ignore the influence that sensual dress has on adultery and fornication. If a man looks with lust upon a woman he commits adultery in his heart (Matthew 5:28). If a woman provokes a lustful look by her appearance is she not partly responsible for the man’s sin? If people would dress in ways that do not provoke lust, the moral fiber of our society would be strengthened.

The danger of overemphasizing any discipline in the Christian life is that some people allow the discipline to become a legalistic code. Some people who harbor unholy attitudes such as hatred, bitterness, envy, and strife falsely think they are spiritual because they wear modest clothes.

Such distortions are hypocritical and wrong. But we cannot dismiss the need for modesty in dress because some distort it. The biblical alternative to legalism is not permissiveness or license but self discipline motivated by grace, faith, love, the Word of God, and the Holy Spirit. (See John 14:15; I Corinthians 9:14-27; II Timothy 2:24-27; John 2:3)

For the sake of our children, we must teach them to respect the holiness of God in all areas of life. Allowing or encouraging preteens and teenagers to dress in many of today’s fashion is an invitation to social and spiritual problems.

A dress code will not automatically remedy the decaying moral fiber among youth, but it does remind them of God’s commandments. We must begin somewhere to teach children and youth moral responsibilty, and standards of modesty in dress offer us this opportunity.

When we honor God and His Word in our hearts and in our outward appearance, He places an umbrella of protection over our families. While moral decay sweeps modern society and many modern churches, we are able to remain relatively untouched. The world may scoff at our modesty, but we dare not lay down our cloak of protection and our obedience to the Word of God.
its also funny to me how we label Christian women who follow Gods new testament commands regarding appearance as legalistic and crazy.Maybe these women have been enlightened to something that we have rejected.Maybe they are being warned that the narrow road to eternal life is more narrow than what we have made it out to be.i know one thing for sure I have the utmost respect fr these women because they are taking a lot of criticism and persecution for what they stand for and we must remember that Jesus said most people are on the broad road that leads to destruction but only few are on the narrow road that leads to life eternal.we love to hear pastors that tell us that God doesn't care what we look like on the outside and that he is only concerned with the heart.sounds like they are trying to make the narrow road a little broader to fit more people on.

Nope, I don't believe anyone is forcing me to do anything. I only have one piercing in each ear and nothing else, nor do I plan to have anything else done. But for some to say women are going to hell for having piercings as the "voice of God" when there are clear instances in the Bible where such jewelry is not seen as wrong and God Himself talks about giving jewelry as a gift of love, not something, hell-inducing... Call me crazy, but it seems very... questionable at best.

I know. The "truly righteous" will tell me to "take it up with God" and I do. I pray about anything and everything. And someday I plan to ask Him in person... pierced ears and all. ;) Maybe God will even let me wear my best earrings ($10 hypo-allergenic round gold studs) on the day I go to meet Him.

I can completely respect your stance on a Godly appearance. And I will concur that there will always be disagreements as to what will specifically define a Godly appearance.

I do wear jeans, a little makeup (I have scars from acne that I prefer to cover up), and, not very often, but sometimes, jewelry. I usually never wear jewelry, but if I do, I neither feel convicted nor condemned. However, it makes me sad to see other Christians condemned for doing so.

I do believe that sometimes God will convict individuals of one thing or another. For instance, I feel convicted, for various reasons, of ingesting too much caffeine. For me personally, it's an abuse to my system. But it's a personal conviction--I'm certainly not going to tell people they're going to hell for going to Starbucks.

You stated that we should be asking whether or not we are taking God's instructions to heart and are obeying them. My question would be, are these people sure they're not adding to God's instruction? Yes, the Bible says we are not to take away from God's Word.

But those who add to it are in just as much danger as the ones who subtract.

seoulsearch that's a good point you make.i was thinking the same thing at one point but they always quoted scripture that Jesus gave them to support what he was telling them.They said that Jesus told them even though they loved him and were serving him they were doing all this in vain and would have ended up in hell if he had not warned them about the makeup,jewelry etc.he told them to spread this message to everyone and anyone so that they could correct these things in their lives before he came to take them home.To be completely honest I am beginning to see why Jesus said only few would make the rapture.he compared it to the days of noah where only 8 souls were saved.he also talked about the broad road to destruction which many are on but said only few would be on the narrow road that leads to eternal life.i begin to ask myself why only few would be found on this narrow road.The Lord has been dealing with me on intricate issues that I really did not think mattered.For example I used to play ball with my shirt off,wear shirts that accentuated parts of my body,wear shirts that exposed my arms etc.i really got scared when the holy spirit spoke to me about water cups in mcdonalds and other restaurants.not sure if you are familiar with this but sometimes when you go to a fastfood restaurant you can ask for a water cup specifically designed to get a drink of water.sometimes they automatically give you one without you asking.well I used to get soda instead of water thinking nothing of it until the holy spirit would quietly tell me I was stealing because I was supposed to be getting water not pop.although on the surface I did not think anyone cared deep down I knew the holy spirit was right so I just began either getting water or asking if I could get pop instead of water.i don't think it is going to be big things that cause many to miss the rapture but the little things in our heart that we are unwilling to let go of.how many of us tell lies,cheat on taxes,take things that don't belong to us,covet our neighbors possesions etc and we really believe that God will overlook these things and tell us "welcome thou good and faithful servant"when we get to heavens gates.now is the time to repent of all these things and allow God to purge us and cleanse us.we should not care what people think or be concerned with fitting in.These ladies have no reason to lie to anyone,they are not selling books,dvds,cds or tapes for money,they definitely are not doing if for fame or popularity.They are actually being persecuted for spreading the message that Jesus gave them.They receive death threats and are excommunicated from many places that they were once made welcome.Joel 2:38 says in the last days God will pour out his spirit on all flesh and many would prophesy,have dreams and visions.Many are having heaven and hell experiences and are coming back to warn humanity but the sad thing is most will not listen because they love themselves,pleasure and sin more than God.someone mentioned that God would not mind peircings etc because he is a creative God but I think he did a good job without us having to add to his creation.we don't tattoo or put peircings on our pets or other animals to make them look better.we enjoy them just the way God made them.i believe God made trousers,jeans,pants for men and dresses for women.the bible says men should not wear womens clothes and that women should not wear mens clothing.its really up to the individual how much of Gods word they consider to be relevant or irrelevant and I believe that some things are so plain that we don't need to be convicted in our hearts to change.we know that no drunkard,idolator,fornicator,adulterer,theives,covetous,homosexuals etc will enter the kingdom of heaven.do people who practice such things need to be convicted before they give up doing something that is obviously going to keep them out of heaven.i think conviction comes when we are confused about if something is in fact a sin or not or maybe we do not have sufficient knowledge on a certain subject.thats why its good to read the bible,especially the new testament,for ourselves as much as we can.i became a sports idolator without even knowing until a compassionate Jesus gave me a rude awakening.The devil is really good at deceiving.he has so many ways to lull us into a false sense of security.it all started when he told eve that it doesn't matter what Gods word said and that God was just preventing them from becoming like Gods themselves.he does the same thing today telling us this doesn't matter and that doesn't matter but if we just take the time to read for ourselves we will find out that a lot of the things the devil causes us to ignore,like he did eve,do actually matter.it was one word that deceived eve.the devil told eve 'ye shall NOT surely die' and look what happened as a result.man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.thats why its so important to read for ourselves.Jesus said search the scriptures for in them you think you have eternal life and they are they which testify of me.The lord gave me rapture dreams where I went up and came down abruptly showing me I was not ready.he has been cleansing me and purging me of little things which I had once overlooked and considered irrelevant.The last rapture dream I had he showed me I was ready but trust me I am not resting on that.we have to deny ourselves daily,pick up our cross and follow him.sorry for such a lengthy response,i get carried away sometimes.its been nice talking to you and may God bless us and guide us into all truth.

I think it's always important to remember that even those who quote Scripture diligently are not always correct and do not always have the right motives, even if they don't seem like they have anything personal to gain. I am just someone who is greatly saddened by how much some people are church legalisms. I agree that obedience is necessary but as you said, we always have to ask for God's guidance. I would hate to see you or anyone else suffer any unnecessary damage by overzealous, but false, or incorrect, teachings.

Thank you for bringing up some very valid points about modesty and also for your patience during this discussion--it is greatly appreciated.

You seem like someone very dedicated to your life with God but also are compassionate and willing to listen to others. I understand very much about God working on us about "the little things", as I'm going through that season as well. Your posts have made me think and pray about several issues and I thank you for that.

Wow, this silly post got some pretty strong opinions and heated comments.

Reading stuff like "women who wear this and that are going to hell", we need to realize that the people who are preaching this are trying to control women and make them lower. We are placed with guilt constantly and it always goes back to our physical appearance. Surprise, surprise.

Some may think I'm going to hell for having a lip ring. I feel sorry for them because they are bound to legalism. I am freed by Christ and though I may do some things that don't bring him Glory I know that my heart is made clean by him and no man or woman can tell me otherwise.

This was supposed to be a fun post. Now it just plain sucks.

Piercings (in moderation) can look cool... on other people.
Just not on me. I'm scared of them. :p I don't have pierced anything, not even my ears.

When I was about 16, I made these fake earrings out of these little keychain connector thingies, and I would wear 3 of them on one ear just for fun during a night out at the movies with friends. One girl saw and thought they were real. :)
It fit on my nose too, but disappointingly it wouldn't stick on my eyebrow for more than about 30 seconds.... and that one was my favorite look too.
...Ahh, youth...

Good ole, rel, ya never know either, I hear of stories of infection with piercings, think of what you;'ve saved yourself from.

I think, Scripture says in so many words that women are to adorn themselves respectfully and for honor to the Lord, Paul speaking in 1 Tim. 2 , for example.

That said, the Lord leads, and, it's not something that would turn me away IF I could see that those piercings did not effect her walk with Jesus. And, bonus ! If she was using those piercings to reach street people, or, just was a part of her personality that others would be attracted to, non-Chrisitians, in particular, that would work for me , greatly, definitely, enhance my appeal to her :)

agirlandherguitar the ladies who had these experiences where Jesus told them to stop wearing jewelry,makeup etc are not trying to control women.They have no ulterior motives.in fact they have become very unpopular,criticised and have even had their lives threatened because of the message they brought back.Jesus alerted them that they were serving him in vain because the way they were dressing did not please him and went against his word.He told them that he cares just as much about their outward appearance as their heart which is something we dont hear to much about in america.in american christianity we are told that God ONLY cares about the heart when all one has to do is read the new testament to find out that Jesus is concerned about our outside appearance too.seems like the new testament instructions for dresscode and conduct of women is very strict,thats why most women either ignore or dont even know these instructions exist.The ladies were told by Jesus that without holiness no one would enter heaven and that holiness is both on the inside and on the outside.how seriously you want to take that is entirely up to you.all i know is that these ladies seem very sincere and they all have scripture from Jesus to support what they say.its not surprising that they are being ridiculed and made fun of.the scriptures tell us plainly that only few would be found on the narrow road but that many would be on the broad road that leads to destruction.i dont wish hell on nobody but the fact remains that only few are going to make it according to Jesus.he said as it was in the days of noah wherein 8 souls were saved so shall it be at the coming of the son of man.Jesus also describes our day as a time where people would be lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God.2nd timothy chp 3 also describes our day saying many would have a form of Godliness but deny the power thereof.its also funny when christian women stand up for and adhere to new testament instructions on appearance and conduct they are labelled legalists,fanatical or cultish yet the way we recognize people in different functions of society is by dresscode yet we dont call the institutions that impose these dresscodes legalists nor do we tell them that they need not enforce a dresscode because our hearts are clean and in the right place.how do we recognize a police officer,a fireman,a bus driver,postman etc etc.is it not by their uniform and appearance.so why do we throw such a fit when God wants his precious children to adhere to a dresscode that he and others can recognize them by.will a police officer,fireman,postman,soldier etc who has all the qualifications yet refuses to wear the standard uniform required of them be allowed to represent them or be a part of them?how about if he/she complains that the particular employer is being too legalistic or cultish in their requirements for dresscode and conduct? seems to me that christiantiy in america does not seem to grasp that God has a dresscode and a code of conduct he wants us to adhere to which is not asking too much.if we can do it for our employers why cant we do it for God? a proffessing christian who claims to have surrendered to Christ and been born again should also understand and know that Jesus want us to seperate ourselves from the world and things of the world.we are to walk different,talk different,look different,act different and this is all acheived by the new nature and spirit we receive after being born again.the prblem is that this is not being preached in moder day christianity so we really dont see a difference between people in the world and christians.

i have two piercing on my right ear, and 1 on the left. i don't think i'll be cool if i put piercing on my face, i'll freak people. :p

Personally I like a woman with a pierced septum. As long as she has a big enough hoop in it, it's a great place to hook a leash. :p
