That's very insightful. I guess we really don't know people until we have walked in their shoes.

Do you think that seeking company in that environment is a slippery slope that leads them into lust or pornography? Maybe that is why it is so prevalent in our own churches. A lot of lonely men seeking something outside of God to fill their lives.
Yes for sure, absolutely.

Its still a sin.

A believe that most sin is a shortcut to what was intended for Good. But so often what is Good is seen as hard or unachievable.

I mean, why would an ugly fat guy with no charm and no chance risk repeated rejection when for a few dollars he can sit with a beautiful woman who will shower him with attention sit with him and laugh at his jokes. People crave intimacy and we have societal rules that say it must be earned and won with trust.

Some people simply grow tired of being left out.

Church should provide some sense of community and belonging but, its not the same as the feeling of belonging that exists in a relationship. And Relationships simply aren't for everyone.

Yeah I think it starts as a cheap substitute for a real relationship, and then it completely destroys any chance of ever having a real relationship. Ever.

And I think the other issue is that a lot of people turn to it as soon as the relationship they are in gets difficult. As in, why bother putting any work into a relationship, they can get all they need, except they can't.

I've got all I need, but I have Christ.

I think being properly rested helps us resist temptation.
Some people fall into temptation at night though. It can actually interfere with proper rest cycles for some people. Not all, but some.

When a person is exhausted, it isn't necessarily easy to fall asleep. We like to have something pleasant to think about as we doze off, which is hard to do when we are exhausted, I think. We therefore are more prone to thinking sinful thoughts.

I learned about this from Romans 7, "for I had not known lust, except the law had said "Thou shalt not covet." Then if you do a word study, you see in the Greek Septuigint of the 10 commandments, the command not to covet contains forms of the word translated 'lust in the New Testament. Lust does not have to be a sexual thing in the Bible either.

If a man looks at a woman in order to covet her, he has committed adultery with her already in his heart. One of the ten commandments says not to covet your neighbor's wife.

This is one of the reasons I tend to disagree with those who say you can 'lust' after your own spouse or commit adultery with your own spouse in your heart.

Wait who says that? The two become one flesh..

If you can lust after your own spouse, that's a problem. It makes sex pretty much impossible, because you're lusting then.

Argh, my Mere Christianity copy is at the church, but there's a great spot in Book 2 I believe that speaks of this. Evil can't even exist on it's own. It's simply a perversion of what is good. No one does evil simply to be doing evil. They set out to do good but corrupt it along the way in their weakness. (Very loose quote. C.S. Lewis did a much better job with that, but the principle stands.)

Hello
liked your post, sounds a lot like my walk.
I don't do post long posts, but, yours was interesting.
The bible tells us to take every thought captive, sounds just what you are doing.
Watching our thoughts can reveal a lot about us.
Thanks
