I just got an email from work announcing the Q1 work outing. They will be doing this thing called a panic room.
Basically, they lock you, and a group, into a room that is filled with puzzles. In order to get out of the room, you must solve the puzzles.
I am not enthusiastic about this prospect at all. I like challenges and excel at them usually, but this doesn't sound like fun to me. It is an artificial entrapment. That alone isn't what bothers me, it is that the expected solution to escape is to solve the puzzles. I'm a very 'out of the box' type thinker. If I were to be locked in one of these 'panic' rooms, I could certainly get out, I have no doubt of that, but I doubt my solutions to the problems would likely fall in the scope of what the creators intended.

So the goal is then not to escape but solve the puzzles, though the stated goal is to escape.

Reminds me of Algebra- You can't just solve it, you need to show how you solved it, and that has to match how you are supposed to solve it.
I didn't like Algebra.
Oh we had that with work. The puzzles were fun although I wasn't of much help, but did find some things. It was eeeeww though, a movie of a kid that got trapped there by a man, just eeeww. But a collegue's kid thought it was fun. I thought it was creepy. It was like with a scary movie.

There is a movie called panic room. That was probably what was being referenced. It wasn't a very good movie though.

QUESTION FOR ANY AND ALL:

Have you ever known people who always assume you are arguing with them? No matter what you say, no matter how carefully you phrase it, their default conversation mode is argument - how do you deal with those people? Cause I could really use some help with this.

Sometimes I think people stay in defense mode without even thinking about it. It helps to call that to their attention.

"I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm just adding to what you are saying."

Or even... "You seem a little defensive, is everything okay?"

They will hopefully go home and think to themselves... gee... maybe I do get too defensive.

Save your breath. You don't need to explain yourself to everyone specially those who are not open minded and always bite your head off when you say something. It does'nt matter what you say, when they have prior resentment against you everything you say is bad because their judgement is clouded.

The mind is like a parachute. It only works when it is open.

I have best friend.. and she always argue with people.. we feel uncomfortable at first but then we realize its not her intention.. she just want to share her opinion by sharing her point of view (analysis here and there and too much logic and fact she shared.. lol) and she isnt that good talking with people.. even if its just 1 word people get offended by that.. lol.. people always misunderstood her..

we as her friend just keep silent if we didnt want to hear "more" opinion.. or said "i'm in a really bad mood" and she will stop with her argument (not argument actually.. just simple talk.. lol)

I think it should come from both parties.. my friend start to learn if the person she is talking with isnt in a good mood so its better to avoid sensitive topic... OR if she is insensitive (usually) we as friend must told her.. and if she is in a reaaaaally good mood to "share" we will excuse ourselves so we wont hear anymore..

Me and my others friends already know her attitude (been friend for more than 10 years), so we just accept her like that.. She always has a good point/reasonable when we really need advice about some stuff... and she already change a little bit now.. having job that push her to interact with more people make her know how to socialist with people..

(and this is one of my bad habit when interact with people.. once i start talking i dont know when to stop.. i hope people here on cc know that and be patience with me.. hehehe)

So, work is going well. I don't have to get up ridiculously early. I'm getting pretty good hours. Worked 28 hours last week, and I'm working about the same this week. Someone very suddenly called off coming into work today, and one of the managers asked if I could stay 30 minutes later than when my shift was supposed to end so they could have time to find someone who could come in and cover their shift. And I was able to do that :)
I take it as a good sign, because that means they like me and already think I'm somewhat dependable. I've heard one of the best things is for the most part, never have the word "no" in your vocabulary when working. And I'm trying to do my best to do just that. So far, things seem to be going good. Yesterday, the last 2 hours were a little bit problematic, but something tells me that's water under the bridge now. It's gone, it's over, and they're not even taking it into account.

I'm glad to hear that things are working out for you. Albeit not having "no" in your vocabulary can be a good thing, knowing when to say "no" is better. Some employers will take advantage of persons that are incapable of saying no.

Yeah. I'll have my limits, but I also want to have a good reputation. I'm not gonna drop everything for them, but if I'm there and they ask me to do something, I'll do it. OR I'll ask them if they have anything they need me to do. It's good to be willing to show that you'll step up. That's how my cousin is where he is right now. He started out as a simple deli counter worker, and now he's actually traveling out of state on the occasion as a consultant for the stores within the company, because he has a good work ethic, he works hard, and knows how to run things efficiently. He also is close to getting a degree now :) I believe his work helps pay for some of his college.
