I totally feel your pain, ntw. Years ago, I was once locked into a situation in which I moved from one place to another but had to pay rent on both places for 6 months. I was grateful that God was with me during that time and helped me make the payments.
Not to sound like some kind of ultra-zealous poster who sweeps in and gives a lot of overly dramatic religious talk, but I wonder if the reason we have to pay such high prices for freedom (wars, families broken apart, human casualties, etc.) is because God's own payment for our freedom was so high.
After all, everything in this world is modeled after God's own examples.

You are on to something though. God's payment, of his son, was for our sins. The reason why things exist the way the do is undoubtedly a result of sin as well.
