Ya gotta love this whole idea of "affordable" health care. I spent some time researching health insurance for myself and my soon to be wife primarily because she has serious long term health issues. She currently qualifies for Medicaid since she is incapable of working and her sole income is a short term disability policy, but once we are married she will no longer qualify since my income will be taken into account and there is no way we could afford her health care out of pocket. Her meds alone cost over $600 per month.
So, I found out that "affordable" health care for her alone will cost about $375/month plus an annual deductible of $6,000 ($500/month). Sooooo, according to the US government via the Affordable Health Care Act an average of almost $900 (just shy of half my monthly income) per month for medical insurance is "affordable". Oh wait, I forgot it's another $375/month for me to get insurance too so it would be over $1,200/ month as long as I never incur any medical costs beyond just the premium.
By the way, that premium is AFTER the tax credit!!!
So, Obamacare was supposed to make health care affordable so that people wouldn't be forced into bankruptcy due to medical bills beyond their ability to pay, yet it leaves huge numbers of people with chronic health issues still going bankrupt in spite of having insurance.
No, I'm not looking to start a debate, just venting my frustration with the very broken healthcare system here in the US.
