UGH!!! is right. Hard to believe people actually do it. I just saw an episode of Mystery Diagnosis where a girl's mother gave her a capsule with tapeworm eggs in it. The girl didn't know what her mom had given her. She got very sick and had to be taken to the emergency room. It took doctors some time to figure out what was going on. It is treatable if caught early, but those worms can do a lot of damage.

The things some people do for vanity.
no, wait...for real? :(

tapeworms for weight loss??
how about a brisk, hilly walk?

-Matthew 6:25
1 Corinthians 6:19 & 20:

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

Living an unhealthy lifestyle that you can do something about and make poor choices regarding your health is not honoring God. Period.

It's one thing to "Live to eat " or shovel food into our faces as a substitute for building our relationships with God and with others. It's much different to care for the body God gave you.

Yup. And don't forget your body is the temple of God. I guess I'm building Him a double-wide.

On December 17th I had a gastric sleeve. It's survey, they go in laparoscopy and take out about 80 percent of your stomach out and staple the rest up. I feel good. If it weren't for the small incisions and the less eating, it's like I never had it. I've been very open about this because as I lose weight I'm not going to lie and say well it's weight watchers.

I chose this because it's less invasive then the bypass and the lap band doesn't have much success also I've known 2 people who's bands corroded and they had to have them removed. Plus I didn't want to have to go have it filled for the rest of my life.

Anyhow, I feel good and am happy I did it.

Worst diet tip I ever heard: "Try the Atkins diet, it really works!"

Second worst diet tip I ever heard: "Take this pill and the fat just melts away. You don't have to change how you eat or exercise." Yeah, a commercial really said all that. Bet they will sell a lot of pills though, that's what people want to hear.

I remember those from the YMCA, my Mom worked there when I was a kid. My Brother and I would pretend they were rides. They shook you all over.

Any tip or product that claims to spot reduce or spot eliminate. You cannot focus down a specific fat store on your body; doing a bajillion crunches or drinking green tea will not eliminate belly fat.

When it comes to fat, your body operates like an HR department when it's time for cutbacks: Last In, First Out. Everyone's body is different in how it chooses to store fat. Some people have a tendency to collect fat around the midsection quickest, some around the thighs, some around the glutes, some actually tend to "marble" their fat stores within the muscles themselves. That specific spot where you gather fat the quickest will be the slowest to actually eliminate fat from, regardless of the method you choose to approach fat loss (diet, resistance training, cardio, etc). On the flip side, areas of your body that were less noticeable but gaining fat regardless will be the first to shrink - the last place you actually started gaining size is the first place you'll start losing. Your body puts on fat how it chooses to, not how YOU choose to, and it will eliminate fat the same way...how IT chooses to, not how YOU choose to do so.

I have known many women to task themselves with attacking their thighs, hips, and glutes, and so they work hard, and within the first month, instead of seeing any real progress on their legs...they lose two cup sizes on their breasts, and their arms and back shrink a little. They may not have picked up a single dumbbell, but the body chooses to burn fat at the easy places first, rather than the places it WANTS the fat to be.

Do this simple trick to eliminate thigh fat! Biggest lie EVAR. (Well, except the skim milk thing.)

Cut calories, and focus on strength. Watch EVERYTHING get better. BOOM.

This, right here. End of thread.

Strength training is the best thing you can do. It allows you to avoid losing too much muscle mass while dropping the pounds, and it allows you to keep what you have where you want it, and shed what you don't want where you don't want it. Well except the cup size thing, I'm not really qualified to answer that one.

Hey Everyone!

(For anyone not wanting to read the entire post, the summary of the thread is highlighted at the very end.) :)

What's faster than a speeding bullet, carries its own spinning blades, and does enough chopping to put even Jackie Chan to shame?

You guessed it--"The Ninja"... or "Nutri Bullet" juicers.

It's THAT time of year again... When pulverizing health food machines are the most-researched, most frequently purchased... and frankly, most often returned... items in the retail business.

As a twist to the near-universal New Year's resolution of losing weight and/or getting in shape, what are some of the most ridiculous things you've heard, tried, or given up in your search for better health? Are there any tips you've picked up along the way that really DID work? Please feel free to share them all.

In my own quest to have a healthier year, I have always meant to read up on whether bananas actually contribute to stomach fat. I had always found this a bit depressing because bananas are one of my favorite foods ever, and I'd even read a book by a Christian doctor who advised AGAINST eating bananas. Sigh. Is it true? Are bananas really of the devil?

After spending some time reading and watching health vlogs, here are two tips I wanted to share:

1. First, the epic fail. One of my health goals is try to cut down on processed sugar and eventually try to eliminate it as much as possible (which, at this point, is hard for me to do even in a single day.) I've read this tip before several years ago but simply CANNOT bring myself to do it: the site I read today recommended envisioning that sugary food as something... extremely unsavory. Several retch-worthy suggestions were given, none of which I will mention here because they are so repulsive.

I have never been able to do this because I know that for myself, the thoughts would eventually transfer to everything I eat. Sigh. There goes one possibly helpful dieting tip... right down the toilet. Quite literally.

2. And now for the good news!!! I just spent 20 minutes reading an article that points out the fact that overall calorie consumption is much more important than specific foods, especially healthy ones. It also stated that the obesity epidemic is usually not caused by eating too much fruit!

Happily, the best advice this article had to give was: "Eat a banana. While standing up. Or better yet, as you take a walk."

Hooray!!!! I am no longer viewing those 3 bananas on my counter top as The Enemy and my Inner Monkey is now gloating with joy... (However, if anyone out there HAS cut out bananas and now has washboard abs to prove it... please share that in your post. I may have to tearfully reconsider.)

*How about the rest of you? What are the best and worst diet/health/fitness tips you've heard or tried? This could be about you or someone else you know. Please share your stories here!*

I may or may not repeat some advice already given, because I don't want to read through everything tonight.
Also note that take advice anyone gives as a grain of salt. Last thing I want is someone to get hurt from something I said.
Well, for me, these are the few pieces of advice I can give.

Sometimes, medical things can get in the way of weight loss. Hypothyroidism, prescribed medication, and overall hormonal imbalances can contribute. Also, deficiencies in certain vitamins and minerals can give you the major blahs. So, make sure to just overall have a nutrient dense diet. Cut out processed junk that our bodies were never meant to comsume. You may or may not need blood work done to make sure you've got normal levels of everything, though.

Probiotics are your friend. There's tons of different kinds out there, so you might need to read up first before you consider buying a certain brand.

While tea isn't a magic potion that will give you a beach body, it can help with sugar cravings, it helps detox the body, and other good things, such as help with mental clarity (it has helped me solo much in that area). It goes perfectly with a nutrititious diet. There are a whole bunch of different ones out there, and different flavors. You'll probably have to experiment to see which ones you do or don't like. There was this one site I came across that was ALL about different teas and their benefits. I just found it. Health Benefits Of Tea Oh and try not to put a bunch of sweetener in it. Try to limit it to like a teaspoon of something like honey. I've found good quality honey is the best in tea.

Know your fats, and know which ones are harmful and are not harmful, such as hydrogenated oils, which can actually cause inflammation.

If there is a certain food you just cant control yourself around (like, mine is chips. Any and every kind.) It's best not to keep them in your house. At all. Not even for once in a while.

Nooo sodas! The sodas we buy from the store are awful. I have a weird reaction to carbonated beverages so I don't drink them at all, but I know for some it is a very real struggle. I hope you find the strength to get rid of it. I promise, you'll feel better.

Bad advice I hear?

A diet low in fats is best. (Inflammatory fats you should be completely rid of, but low fat? No. Your brain thrives on good fats, such as omega 3 fish oil. Well you can get it in other forms, but yeah. )

This pill or this certain piece of equipment will guarantee that you will have the body you always wanted! (MALARKEY! I'm leaving it at that.)

It's all about calories. (It's not all about the calories, I promise you. While of course eating like 4,500 calories a day might not be ideal depending upon your activity level, not all calories are created equal. Too much of anything can be a bad thing, but make sure to look at all aspects of your diet.)

Hopefully the advice I gave was decent. I do realize not all of this works for everyone, but I've found that when you just try to eat nutrient dense foods and cut out most processed foods, everything else just seems to follow right behind. :)

Once again, I really hope I didn't say anything controversial (though anything health related is seen as controversial nowadays. :/)

As far as what I'm following and successes, I am drinking tea regularly now, mainly with lemon and cinnamon. I find chamomile extremely pleasant, and better tasting than green tea. I'll probably be getting a decent probiotic supplement soon, too (especially since stomach bug season has arrived. I got it so bad last year I almost went to the hospital. Nooot this year!). I haven't lost any weight, but I do feel better already. I've also cut out coffee. Started suffering from acid reflux that would keep me up well into the night.

I'm not sure what all I'm going to do about nutrition, since I have a picky palate (I really do hate it I want to like veggies. But I love old fashioned homemade chicken vegetable soup, so I've been making that lately). But I'm making small changes.

I want to like veggies.
Have you ever tried Mrs Dash? They are salt free seasoning/herb blends that I like to add to veggies. It helps to give a little zing without adding that hideous sodium demon to them.

Honey is a wonderful thing. Ounce for ounce it is sweeter than sugar. It is the only known food that will never spoil. And if you use honey made locally it helps with seasonal allergies - local honey from local flowers, the same local flowers that are putting out that pollen... think about it.

Alas, many turn up their noses at honey because it has a flavor. That's why sugar became so popular so fast, because people preferred an anonymous sweetener.

I've heard of it before, I'm pretty sure. I haven't seen it anywhere locally. But that's what Amazon is for.... :)

The good part is you didnt tell me to just add cheese, lol! I hear that a lot, but unfortunately most don't know my struggles with food allergies (lactose and casein are my worst enemies. One day, on heaven or earth, I shall defeat them!) So this is a good alternative. That and I also like to cook my veggie with meats (hence the reason I love chicken and veggie soup. I don't always add noodles). But my sister's fiance eats 0 veggies. I don't judge but having two very different diets in the house makes it hard to cook the way I like things. I'll find a way, though! I'm doing this! :)

I love Mrs. Dash, most grocery stores have it in the spice isle. When I have a sore throat I use really thick honey and I can't think of the name of it it's a dark honey though, it's really sweet. I've also used garlic paste to help with colds and illness, I used to put it on my kids feet when they were babies, now they'd flip if I tried rubbing garlic on them, but it helps, here is a link to the recipe,http://nacd.org/health/goot_garlic_oil_ointment.pdf

Here is a warning though, don't use this stuff if you don't want to smell for a while.

Garlic...

It's one of my favorite spices. But there was this elder couple (now deceased) who used to go to our church, and they rode the church bus - and they took garlic pills every day - and every time they got out of the bus the whole bus smelled like old garlic.

I still use garlic in food, but whenever anyone mentions it for health reasons I shudder.

Honey is one of my favorites. I love using locally made honey (raw) and putting it in/on just about everything lol (like toast, using it in quick breads is good, especially banana)! I should probably get some more sometime.... I don't care about the flavor because I'm used to it. I think it tastes better than sugar.

And to edit the edit...remember, use it wisely and sparingly! Remember what I said about using too much of a good thing...Proverbs will support me on this one! Lol
