I'm trying to like people's posts as they share their stories... I'm sorry if I missed anyone--it's not on purpose, I'm just trying to keep up with posts as I go about daily chores.

I find it interesting that the majority of people describe themselves as being "shy and quiet" in high school. Are you still that way now? And if so, I wonder if that's the big attraction of sites like this on the internet--it gives a voice to the shy and quiet.

You know, like Willie. ;)

(Just kidding, Mr. William, Sir!!)
I was shy and quiet.
When l did talk, l would say odd things.

I'm so happy that l'm not like that anymore.

There's my Singles Forum post for ya, Kim.

By the way, what happens when a Grown-Up Jock meets a Grown-Up Nerd? I found out last week.

I work with a guy my age who was the complete opposite of me in high school (we didn't grow up together, we just talk about a lot of parallel time frames in our life)--he was the popular jock who hung out with the "in" crowd, and I, of course, was the nerd. Fortunately for me, he's also very easy-going and has a good sense of humor.

A few nights ago we were sorting a huge load of merchandise, and he was about to put a box of baking supplies in with the "Electronics" stack.

"Derek," I said (not his real name), "I'm pretty sure that box goes under 'Kitchen'..."

"Ok, I'll check", he replied, and began to cut the box open.

In the middle of this process, I tried to stop him by saying, "But Derek, you don't have to bother cutting it open (*RRRIIIIPPP!!!* as he tore into it with a blade) because... it says, 'Baking Foil Cups' right on the side of the box!"

He finally LOOKED at the side of the box... and shook his head.

I told him, "Well you see, while you were out winning world championships, I was at the library practicing a little skill called, 'Reading.' I know it probably didn't seem very useful at the time..." And I gave him a big *grin*. :D

Thank goodness he saw the humor of the situation!! Here I was, the Grown-Up Nerd (reading), and he, being the Grown-Up Jock took to the task in the most physical way possible (cutting it open.)

No worries, though. He eventually got me back, because the next week I was making so many clumsy mistakes that our boss asked, while laughing, "Kim!! Have you been smoking (drugs)???!"

Heh heh heh. Good old high school references.

HE LIVES!!!

Good to see you back, Reborn!! :D

Seriously. I loved the part about how you stood up for other people. I tried to do that, but I didn't do it as often as I should.

But that's something I've been trying to change as an adult.

I was and I'm still into sports. I was in cross country and track, as well as played football, basketball, and soccer. I was also in a bowling league and played tennis in my free time. As far as actual school, I pretty much kept to myself and kept my circle of friends small. I transferred school districts going into HS, but most of the kids already knew who I was because they knew someone in my family, so that was weird for me. Umm even though I skipped classes quite often XD, I was on the Academic Team. I tried to stay away from "advanced" classes, but I did take an advanced physics class that built a robot for a competition. That was kind of fun lol.

But yeah.. I didn't really care for HS and I don't miss it now.

I only went to High School for three years and took extra classes by correspondence and finished with just two classes short of the entire 4 years....so got my GED and married in August of what would have been my Senior year of High School at the age of 17.

Maybe just a little too smart for my own good...lol High School was fun.... got suspended for a week because of a prank that a girlfriend and I played....also had to wash all the windows of the school inside and out as part of the punishment (was a private school not hugh High School building)... this week off was in May and my friend and I were out getting a suntan while the rest of the kids had to rot in a classroom.... I don't think you could really call it a punishment....lol I wasn't a bad kid just a tad mischievous...o.k. well a lot.... I made good grades and got bored easy except for when it came to Geometry which I cried over because I just didn't get it. It was the only class I got a D in and was glad to get that.... I once got a D in Physical Ed but only because I was goofing off.... My grade point average was a solid 3.5 and could have been 4.0 if I'd applied myself...

Math was good because you did it and it was over not like having to memorize dates and stuff for history... Loved music and was always in choir and concert choir getting to travel and sing places which even after High School sang in several music groups and would love to still sing in a group if one were available now.... Was pretty popular but not most popular group of kids.... Had just enough fun to get in trouble once in awhile but never in real trouble.... Have never been back to reunions mainly because I didn't graduate....

Maybe I will figure out what I want to be someday when I grow up.....lol

* What were you like in high school? What groups/clubs/cliques did you belong to?

I was friendly and outgoing. I was involved with the student body government, class treasurer, secretary and VP. I really didn't belong in a clique because my friends were spread out in different cliques. Most of us are still close and keep in touch. Last summer about 30 of us met for dinner, we have a big reunion this year.

* Who were your friends? Who were your favorite teachers, and why?

Most of my friends were guys mainly because there was no drama with guys. My closest friend was Sharon and we met in the 6th grade, we are still friends till this day. I really didn't have a favorite teacher.

* What were your favorite subjects, and what did you intend to do after high school? (Did it go as planned?)

My favorite subject was history and my intention was to go to college and go into medical research but I met and fell in love with a college guy during my Junior year in high school and got married right after graduation. I became a stay at home Mom to 5 kids and loved every moment of it.

Hmmmm...(I'll make this short n sweet) In a way I'm still the same that I was in high school, but I'm no where near naive as I was then. I hung out with the most random people, took my electives like they were actual classes.. I wasn't a 'nerd' but I wasn't the 'cool' kid either. I knew nothing about fashion.. Or girly stuff.. But I hated sports too. All I wanted to do was graduate high school, cause that's all my parents wanted me to do.

The best year was senior year, short day, and I got to go home and watch tv or whatever I wanted to do. Life wasn't much simpler then though.. I struggled a lot with my family and with stress I lost weight. I thought life would get better after high school, but I was very sadly mistaken... Lol

I wouldn't trade my past or my up bringing for anything in the world, cause if it wasn't for my life experience... I wouldn't be who I am today. :)

I was quiet, nice. I had friends from all different groups. My best friend was someone I grew up with. I liked Duran Duran, dated a little. I worked a lot and had older friends. I went to parties and when I wasn't working I was out with friends drinking, so I think having to work a lot was a good thing for me.

I have to stay even though I was drunk or stoned a lot I got decent grade's and was respectful to my parents.

However for those of you in high school. Don't follow my lead. ☺

Our schools are so different from yours that it's difficult to answer :p

Our system goes like this:

Barneskole : 1st to 7th grade
Ungdomsskole: 8th to 10th grade
Videregående: Two years + practice, or three years to get into higher education

Høyskole ("University college")
or
Universitet (University)

Either way, I've always been reserved, didn't make friends easily, and until I got to "Videregående" I was always the one that got bullied every day. There are no Christian unions or anything like that in Norway, and no sport teams directly connected to school (unless you study sports that is), so you just go to school for classes and then leave again (or stay at the library to study).

High School was rough for me.

I was not popular by any stretch of the imagination. I was weird. I stood out. I was skinny, short, smart, had a smart mouth, and I was a target of a LOT of bullying.

I had a few friends, but none were really close. I didn't belong to a particular group. My Dad worked in the oilfield, so we were poor, but I didn't fit in with the poor kids. My family had land and livestock, but I didn't fit in with the hicks and country folks. I got really good grades in school but I didn't fit in with the nerds. I had NO athletic ability, so I wasn't a jock. I was a late bloomer, so girls weren't interested in me at all, and I didn't know how to talk to them.

Funny enough, my 20-year reunion was held this past summer, and the organizer of it told her entire committee of volunteers that were in charge of tracking us down for invites that "Jon IS NOT to be invited". My buddy told me this a month or so back when he and I talked. He was on that committee and he didn't say anything so as to not rock the boat.

High School was far worse than prison. No kidding. Not kidding one iota.

I attended a large (2500 students) suburban high school with a lot of LDS folks (there was a stakehouse across from the school). There were also a lot of outspoken atheists.

My freshman and sophomore years I was in love with all kinds of pop music. I had my haircut like Madonna circa "Borderline." I had over 100 pictures of Duran Duran, and I gave a speech about them in English. I watched a lot of videos on a local UHF station (we had no cable).

I was allowed to wear make-up as a freshman, and I faithfully got up first semester and went through the whole rigamarole. After that, I decided I'd rather sleep and wore very little make-up.

I was a book nerd and very reserved (not shy). I don't say this lightly. Someone once asked my younger brother "What was she like in high school?" He replied, "Ummm...in her bedroom always reading." I read several books a week...depending on the week. I went to the public library weekly and often spent my lunch hour in my school's library.

I never got in trouble at school or at home.

I would speak up in class because I was academically confident, but I didn't take a ton of social risks. People knew I was a Christian. I remember arguing with various atheists about abortion, evolution, the veracity of scripture, etc. My senior English teacher loved me because I got all the biblical allusions in the British literature we were studying. In my high school year book, people made comments about how I was "sweet" and that I'd always laugh at people's jokes...even if they were dumb. One of the LDS boys challenged me to a contest having kids (he knew I was Catholic and wanted a large family). In fact, I often talked about how I was going to have six children and homeschool them.

I had school friends but mainly socialized with kids from an evangelical youth group I attended (most of them went to different high schools). I spent the last two years of high school not listening to anything but contemporary Christian music and ended up going to several cool concerts as a result--Petra, Randy Stonehill, Leslie Phillips (before she became Sam Phillips), Steve Tyler, etc.

I mostly liked all my teachers...but I'm a school geek. My favorite was Dino Castelli who taught photography. He appreciated my non-conformity. But I also loved Mrs. Fullerton, my German teacher, and Mr. Garbowsky, my senior English teacher. Mr. Peralta was a cool teacher (despite the fact that he once made me do group work with a bunch of jocks who were unfortunate stereotypes). He'd been to 'Nam, had a war injury, and lots of great stories.

I was in the German club (and planned on being a foreign language teacher). I had a few things published in our high school's literary journal. I entered a short story in a contest at the encouragement of my creative writing teacher and managed to win. I used to tell my peers that I would end up writing novels and even had a pseudonym chosen. I was very academic and took a ton of honors classes (basically what would be AP classes now). I ended up being number nine in my class.

I went 1000 miles away from home to college. I had always planned to be a teacher...and did become one. However, when I entered college, my goal was to be a foreign language teacher, and that changed. I have yet to write any novels (but I have a few ideas that are percolating). I never did have six children. I also have never gone to a high school reunion. There are a handful of people from high school on my facebook page. We'll communicate sporadically. The last time I saw anyone that I'd gone to high school with was when I met up with some youth group friends in Fort Worth in like 2008.

Oh boy- (deep breaths...) High school for me is my most shameful memory and the only reason I am speaking of this is because I have to be honest with all of you.
Many here tell me how I am a shining example of what a Christian is suppose to be but you all have to know that I was not always who I am now. See I normally would be the person ppl would pick on who wouldn't be popular who wouldn't have many friends and who couldn't even talk to girls but I knew what it took to be liked and to be popular and sadly it's as simple as being very perverted.

in highschool I was very popular but not because of my looks or talents or even my personality i was popular because of my ability to weave stories all of them having to do with sex and pervertness. Everyone knew the stories I spoke were fantasy but everyone wanted to hear them, all the foot ball players the cheerleaders the popular kids all around school hung out with me because of these stories i could have made big bucks writing porn if I had thought of it back then. I mean these were nasty stories and sadly I could keep them coming. just remembering the person I was back then fills me with shame and regret, highschool was a joy ride for me at the time but remembering it now is just to painful

I was very naive, a big dreamer, incredibly studious, got along with most of my peers but close with very few. Did a few reckless, stupid things here and there, but I'll refrain from expounding on those details.

I was involved in a TON of clubs...marching band, symphonic band, jazz band, quiz bowl, french honor society, and playing music for the drama club performances. I also took individual piano lessons.

My favorite teachers were my biology and chemistry teachers... disliked the subjects, but they were both so ornery it was endearing. And funny. I like to think my chemistry teacher was secretly entertained by all the labs my partners and I ruined. My actual preferred subjects were math and music.

After high school, I wanted to study international business and i wanted to travel and help people somehow but didn't really have a specific career path in mind. I took an intro finance class in college that was so enjoyable it inspired me to change my major.

Ive been working in the field I studied, but it started to take its toll on me. It can be a lot of pressure, and I was neglecting a lot of things, including my own sanity. I recently accepted a new position that starts in a few weeks that is zero client facing but lots of strategery. The thing I'm MOST excited about these days is not taking work home and just having more flexibility.
I didn't have a clear vision of what I wanted for my future in high school, I just tend to set and pursue a million goals at once, and figure out what I like and don't like as I move along. Socially, I'm the same. ..i interact with all kinds of people, but get close to very few. It's not that I'm shy, or averse to socializing, just self contained. My best friend in high school wanted to become a writer and now she's an English professor (who writes sometimes) and our other friend wanted to go into radio but is now a nurse, married with kiddies. One of the guys I went to school with ended up going back to teach and my youngest sist
(Uh, where does time go? 30 seemed ages away in high school)

....seoul, I might have to dig out my high school yearbook. I'm curious on where a lot of folks ended up

I was quiet and somewhat nerdy/popular. and got along with most everyone. The ones that I couldn't stand in high school are now my closest friends. lol.

Even some of the teachers I had are close friends.
