The one with the Blond roots. Yeah that was me. I got put into that role, and I went with it. One time, one guy asked if I had blond roots, and when I lifted up my bangs his mouth hit the floor faster then a cat can escape out the door, just cause I did. :D

But anyway, I was involved with French Club, Orchestra (such a shocker), and in 9th grade, basketball. And my favorite subject was math and favorite teacher was probable either my biology or chemistry teacher. Subject I hated the most (and grit my teeth anytime I think I might have to teach. Kim that would be my most hated job, but yes I would do it.) English.

Oh, I had also originally planned on becoming either a lawyer, or a missionary. I also thought of at one time majoring in government, or in Biochemistry.

* What were you like in high school? What groups/clubs/cliques did you belong to?

I was very small (a little over 5 foot until Year 11 Christmas holidays), I'm now 6 foot, 5 inches) and reasonably academic. I regularly cracked jokes, so I was a bit of a class clown. I belonged to a rag-tag group of friends. We didn't have much in common, but we enjoyed each other's company and a few of us shared the same faith. I spent most of my recess and lunch breaks either in the library reading and talking to people or outside talking and playing handball with my friends (and avoiding bullies).

* Who were your friends? Who were your favorite teachers, and why?

I'm still good friends with those I was closest to in high school. My best friends were two highly academic, sporty etc. guys. There seemed to be nothing they couldn't do. I did get jealous of them at times because of that, but it wasn't healthy for our friendship and I eventually got over it. The two other friends were very different and not Christians. They weren't generally academic sorts, but they were bright. I didn't really have any girl friends (friends who were girls) until my university days, but I got along well with my best friend's sister.

My favourite teachers taught Visual Arts, Ancient/Modern History, Media Studies and Christian Studies and they were firm but fair. They were fun-loving and a bit quirky. They made learning fun and they knew their stuff and how to teach it. And they didn't put up with any bull manure that bullies and other undesirables would often get away with in other classes. Also, I struck up a good rapport with the librarian. She would often talk to me about different books and recommend some to me. She introduced me to Harry Potter before it became a big thing. She would also give me articles etc. about Tintin when she found them.

* What were your favorite subjects, and what did you intend to do after high school? (Did it go as planned?)

My favourite subjects were Visual Arts, English, Ancient History, Drama, Christian Studies and Media Studies.I enjoyed Drama classes but dreaded the final public performances we had to do.After high school, I didn't know what I wanted to do. I was just concentrating hard so I would receive decent grades. I found exams particularly challenging. I had some vague idea of doing graphic design. But it was very vague. No, that didn't work out. I did the three-year course though and I've retained some of what I learnt.

I forgot to mention, I was really depressed. Low self esteem. My identity was in my grades. If I wasn't the smart kid, I felt that I was a nobody. No one knew I was depressed. Since everybody knew me as the Christian kid, I felt everybody expected me to have it all together and happy all the time.

I was very lonely even though I had a handful of friends.

I was really shy, not too different from what I'm like now. Despite being so insecure and quiet I was involved with several different things. I did Pep Squad, Spanish Club (Officer), Leos Club, theatre, and I was always taking medical classes. My senior year I took a class called Clinical Rotation and we would literally rotate to different areas of a local learning hospital. I got to see many cool things like a baby being born and a heart surgery. It was fun and the kids in that class got really close. What was a problem was that it was during zero hour. Meaning we would get up and go to the hospital before school even started! This class was an extra one on stop of all the other 8 we had to take.
2
My friends were the kids from the AP classes. I had them in all my other classes too. Of course a lot of the girls from pep squad were also my buddies. Pep squad was very fun because we would perform in the football games and pep rallies and compete in dance competitions in the Spring semester.

3
My favorite subjects were the medical ones (mental health, nutrition, and A&P). I also loved biology and it continues to be one of my favorite subjects today. I planned on going to college but I wasn't sure for what. I've taken a long time figuring that out and now that's I've settled with Actuarial Science I couldn't be happier! Seriously it's way too stressful wondering what I should study. It didn't go as planned in the length of time though. I would have liked to have finished by now.

I see it as a blessing from God though. If I would have gone to college straight out of high school, I would've gotten loans to study something I probably wouldn't want right now. In a way it's good that I've taken longer because I've gotten wiser and matured a bit. Sometimes teens aren't really prepared for college.

But yeah...high school was okay. It wasn't the best experience ever but it wasn't the worst either.
Go Brahmas Go!!!

Hey Everyone,

This is something I've wanted to ask for a while:

* What were you like in high school? What groups/clubs/cliques did you belong to?

* Who were your friends? Who were your favorite teachers, and why?

* What were your favorite subjects, and what did you intend to do after high school? (Did it go as planned?)

My church denomination had several local lower-level schools in the area, so our Christian high school was kind of like a big community center of all these schools combined. It was a curious thing because once we all got there, some people were already "famous" because they were sports stars, had well-known musical talent, or were the offspring of someone famous in the church community (a pastor or teacher, etc.)

And then there was the rest of us. (My Dad didn't become a pastor until I was an adult and had moved away, and, seeing the pressure other pastor's kids went through, I've thanked him for that quite often.)

I've often said I'm an introvert who can occasionally masquerade as an extrovert, and my freshman year I was eager to meet new people and try to reinvent myself to some extent. Within the first few months, I found myself a part of nearly every activity you can imagine (student body, volleyball, yearbook, choir...)

By my senior year, the reality of typical teenage despair and angst had set in and I had withdrawn from almost everything. The popular girls had given me the title of "The Nerd Magnet" (because they said I'd talk to any nerd within a 10-mile radius), and I embraced their label and all its negativity wholeheartedly. I could talk to most anyone fairly easily, but conversation does not equal inclusion. I have always felt most at home with others like myself who don't really fit under any label.

My best friend in high school was a guy who was nearly 6'4" (seeing as I'm 5'1", we were quite the duo), had long hair, and always dressed in black, including sunglasses (he wasn't even trying to be cool or mysterious, he just had extremely sensitive eyes) and a black trench coat. (I, on the other hand, had fully embraced the "neon colors in every shade... all at the same time" fad.) Jocks only talked to me when they wanted answers to their homework or dates with my friends (I'm not trying to stereotype here--I'm just speaking from my experience), while everyone at school people whispered that my friend, because of his appearance, surely worshiped Satan (one of the things that drew me to him was how well he knew the Bible.)

What were your high school years like for you? (Everyone is welcome to answer, including marrieds and those who are still IN high school.)

For me, high school seems like just a blip now, but back then, it was everything. Sometimes, when I get tired and frustrated with this life, I can hear God telling me that someday I'll look back, and this life will be a lot like high school--it seems like such a big deal at the time, but someday, it won't really matter.

Mmm... I might give a legit response to this later, but like this:

That was before a Speech Tournament my Sophomore year.

That was some number of months after my brother was born. Also my sophomore year...

One of my senior pictures...

Show Choir my senior year...

My best friend (middle) and one of my childhood friends from South Africa (left) in South Africa where we went after HS Grad.

That's enough strolls down memory lane for now. If you want to see more, they're on Facebook. ^_^

Me on highschool....

I dont have much friends at that time.. not talking too much.. having over protective parents makes me "isolated" from my friends.. cant always go around with them..

Then... in the class i like to sat in front so i can focus better..
When my school start on 6.30 AM i like to wake up at 5.00 AM and excited to go around 6.00 AM
I always the one who like to "follow the rule" such as how to dress.. for example we're supposed not to wear mini shirt/skirt and i follow it.. while most of my friends didnt..

So, can you imagine how boring my life at that time???
My focus only study and study and play badminton in the weekend.. and no, i didnt go to church either at that time..

I intended to take economic or language as my major at university.. but it ended i'm became pharmacist.. its funny now because if i can repeat 1x again i'll go to cooking school/class or whatever it is.. hahaha

This made me laugh, JeniBean! :)

I'm with you in that I really appreciate how much everyone has opened up here. Obviously, high school brings up some very vivid memories for most folks...

I feel very sad for the people who were bullied and/or treated unfairly. It's interesting that, while there have been some people who sound like they had some enjoyable times in high school, no one seems to have really loved that time in their life, either.

I actually have an idea for a "Part 2" for this thread, but it's kind of geared towards people who has a lot of "glory days" in high school... and I don't think we really have anyone here who fits that bill! :D

Anyway... It's been great to see how many people have participated in this thread and I'm hoping you'll continue to share!! GO TITANS!!! Er... *cough* (It's been so long it literally took me several seconds to remember what my high school's nickname was.)

P.S. ARGH... ran out of time for the edit... Please pardon the grammatical errors... As usual, running on about 4 hours of sleep...

I also have to say that the stories of bullying kind of bring out the vigilante in me. I've always had a strong personality but I didn't stand up for people then as much as I should have. And when it came to teachers I didn't like or didn't agree with, I was pretty good at being a sarcastic punk kid (as you can see, some things haven't changed. :))

One of my biggest regrets is that I don't think I stood up for people as much as I should have--and yes, sometimes when someone made fun of me for talking to someone, I would back away from talking to that person. *hangs head* This is why I'm quicker to say something now when I see friends being bullied. I'm trying to make up for the past... and to change.

I hope I'm stronger now, and that I would not only continue to keep on talking to anyone I wanted to talk to, but would also stand up to the one bullying them as well.

Willie, I don't mean to call you out, but because you were willing to share publicly in this thread, may I ask... Do you think grown-up bullies have regrets? Do they ever feel guilty or wish they could change the pain they caused other people?

I have to admit. Some of the people (including teachers) I was sarcastic to... I have few to no regrets, depending on the situation. Some of the teachers I smart-mouthed turned out to be pretty cool and we wound up getting along great in the end, so I do regret seeing them as just another stuffy, prohibitive authority figure and not giving them the benefit of the doubt.

Hmm, bullies... I did have one or two in my life. They never picked on me for long. I thought it was because I didn't give them the reaction they wanted. Later I found out it was because my sister would threaten to beat them up if they didn't leave me alone. Yay for sisters!

I met one of those bullies later, when we were both grownups. He was working at a grocery store. He seemed kind of embarrassed. I didn't say anything to him, just paid for my food and left. Saw the same guy a couple years later at the police station when I was picking up an accident report. He still seemed embarrassed.

High school was bad at first. Over summer all the boys (well, the boys who actually went to high school), was towering above me and I could no longer beat them up;) (I'm jk...sort of at least lol). Well, on a serious note, high school was dead boring, the teachers were slow and me and my best friend spent too much time giggling in class...needless to say Ms. Morbid Martha did not approve lol. My folks did not approve either, and I was forced into becoming a student making her mama proud lol...or else....lol

In high school I became "Jeannie Mae", cause some spineless guy told Ms. Martha in public: "Jeannie made me do that" (my name is Jean), and that's the origin of the nick I'm using on here. Reckon I had it coming.

I was one of the worst to try and tangle with, if someone started with me, it would be a long long war, and that persons friends and family would be targeted. I didn't just fight, I went in to seriously injure or kill (lucky I never did kill anyone, came close). I was ruthless, sorta like a mob boss.
I was like Iran, nobody liked me, but was afraid i would nuke them if they messed with me.
Wat?

What is this...l dont even...

I was extremely shy and self conscious and thought everybody was staring at me. I had 3 close friends, and they were honest sincere girls that appreciated me and took the time to find out I was not the snob everybody else thought because of how quiet I was. I have certainly had to learn to come out of that shell and am so glad I did not continue that way into adulthood. My few favorite teachers were the same way and didn't try to put me in the same mold as every other student.

I was on the track team and a girls' tag football team because I was good at it and didn't have to interact much with anybody but the coach. I also played violin and had a natural talent for that, but my dad rode me so hard to practice practice practice that I gave that up. It broke my teacher's heart and he begged me to play again for years after that; he said I would be in the city's symphony orchestra one day.

I had horses for several years after high school when I could afford to pay their board and lived at home. I had taken lessons for years and had an instructor that let me use one of her horses to go into some jumping shows. But I had to sell my last horse after I was married and my husband got hurt at work and was out for months.

Back in the 70's when I was in school, being a secretary was a very well paid job; taking shorthand or using a dictaphone, typing the boss' letters and running his errands, etc. I put my focus into all related subjects and did pretty good for a few years, then things changed and women I don't think are even called secretaries. I married and never went back to school and regret it to this day. I make a small wage and am a single mom. But I never thought I would be divorced. My income was a decent second income.

I think life has just been very disappointing and I struggle with hopelessness. I often feel I took the wrong path and life just didn't go the way it was supposed to. I know of course Who my hope has to be in and He will take care of me as I age. It's hard waiting sometimes because life is not much fun and I miss being able to do something I am good at. The Lord could have all new things waiting for me but I have no sign of what is coming.

Not so much, specifically, in that I feel a pressing need to seek out any particular individuals to seek forgiveness. But there is a general crummy feeling of realizing what a bast____ you were. There was one little guy who stood up to me (actually defending someone else) fully knowing that he was probably going to be pulverized. You could see it in his eyes. That affected me so much that I did nothing, even though I knew it was going to cause me serious problems with my rep. I'd say that I likely began to change from that day on.
