if you going all out for the western look, why not wear chaps, shirt, scarf and cowboy hat as well.
Made of leather to protect your legs out here in the west we have a lot of open range but there are always things like cactus, scrub brush, rock formations, and host of other things your legs could be rubbed by or even puncture your leg. So chaps served as a way to protect our legs from nature. Not to mention when you are riding like up in the mountains is nice to have chaps so when that tree limb that can serve as a switch comes flying back it don't hurt as much when it hits your chaps hurts a little more when it snaps back and hits your legs protected alone by your jeans.
Since they are leather they are handy for keeping your legs dry when the sky opens up decides to down pour on you. A slicker a waterproof duster along with some chaps keeps you dry when it is raining. Which if you are miles and hours away from home or shelter then having clothing that will keep ya dry as possible is always nice. Also come in handy when riding in a pen cause the horse might brush ya up against the metal pen walls which will also have bolts and such sticking out.
Bandannas or kerchiefs are handy when riding cause out here in the west we are semi arid so it gets hot and gets dusty. So can use one to wet and keep the back of your neck cool cause like where I am in Colorado the higher altitude means the sun can just bake you. So unless you are out and about in nature really is no need for chaps and kerchiefs.
Although a kerchief does come in handy when cleaning up after livestock cause it covering your nose can be nice to spare ya the smell..........LOL So really no need to wear those thigs unless actually out riding range or in rough terrain riding or working to protect yourself from nature and the elements and other dangers. So that stuff is good for protective clothing but not needed so much if you are just out and about shopping or hanging with friends.
