Living by the sword today would translate to mean someone living a life of crime, like the Mafia.
They make their living that way.

Jesus was telling Peter to stop acting like a law breaker.
Nothing about owning or carrying a weapon.

How do we know?

Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him,
“for all who draw the sword will die by the sword."
Mat 26:52

Did you notice?
Peter kept his sword.

Not only that.
Jesus did not tell Peter to get rid of it!

But, Jesus told Peter to KEEP IT!

In Christ .......... GeneZ
Except in the King James it says they that take the sword shall perish by the sword.

Matthew 26:52

“Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.”
MATTHEW 26:52 KJV "Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall..." (kingjamesbibleonline.org)

Jesus told Peter what?
.... to KEEP his sword!

If your interpretation were a good one?
Jesus would have commanded Peter to immediately get rid of his sword...

Jesus was warning Peter not to abuse the right to bear arms.
For, what Peter was doing?
Would be like some jerk shooting an arresting officer who was arresting another person.
Peter broke the law!
Peter should have been killed for what he did!
That is why Jesus said, they that take the sword shall perish by the sword.

Its time to think a little bit more than you have been accustomed to.

grace and peace ..............

45Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.
46Rise, let us be going: behold, he is at hand that doth betray me.
47And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people.
48Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast.
49And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.
50And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.
51And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear.
52Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.
53Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?
54But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?
55In that same hour said Jesus to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me.
56But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.
57And they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.
MATTHEW CHAPTER 26 KJV (kingjamesbibleonline.org)

Here is the problem, Jesus was an innocent he never broke the law or committed an offence. He was speaking to his disciples when Judas brought the chief priests, elders and a mob armed with swords and staves.

Religious leaders were plotting to get rid of Jesus long before this incident. It was an unruly mob not law enforcement officers like Roman Soldiers What Peter did was defend an innocent man in self defense who was un armed. Jesus told him to put it away so the scriptures could be fulfilled on the betrayal, death, burial and resurrection of the messiah. That's when the disciples fled and the mob arrested him, in todays terms they committed a citizens arrest for crimes he never committed or a false arrest.

Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except
from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore whoever resists
the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on
themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid
of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. For he is God’s
minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain;
for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil."
Romans 13:1-4

If Peter was doing something that was lawful by attacking with a sword someone in law enforcement?
And chased away the Roman guards?

Guess what?

JESUS WOULD HAVE NOT GONE TO THE CROSS TO DIE FOR OUR SINS!
