He thought that moral uprightness is all that is required to have eternal life however Jesus' discourse with him revealed that he was at the apex of pride. Religion by self-effort hold that entrance into heaven is simply a matter of doing good deeds by human effort, but as per scripture good deeds cannot merit salvation (Titus 3:5). Righteousness cannot be found anywhere but from Christ's which is bestowed by grace therefore His redeeming work is what avails.

I just can't believe that words of scripture, words from God can be made to say the things I am reading! That born again means liberty from law, for instance. We are children of the King, and our Father, you think, wants us to live without instructions, without order? He gives us grace, sent His Son for that?

God gave us the entire 119th Psalm explaining His law to us, giving us the beauty of it. God sent the HS to help us understand it. He created a world operated by that law. The very stars in the sky tells us of its wonder.

This is so exactly what God tells us, but it is so hard to really explain. It isn't that we aren't to listen to every written law and be open to God's voice through the Holy Spirit as we hear the law. God explained it when He told us about keeping the Sabbath. We are to keep it, resting and relying on the Lord that day. That is a God principle. But it is also a God principle that we are to love our neighbor, and love trumps every instruction we are given. God illustrated it for us when he told us about keeping the Sabbath. If someone is hurt on the Sabbath we are to help them, for the law of love trumps all laws. It really isn't scripture at all to treat every day the same. We are to spend six days working best we can for ourselves. We aren't to spend six days resting from working for ourselves at our jobs, just one day. We are to keep all law, with the Holy Spirit and God principles of justice, mercy, love and faithfulness leading, explaining and even adjusting the law.

Mankind is incapable of pleasing Yahweh in the flesh, however once having received the Salvation that is Yeshua, we are counted as righteous. This by no means is an excuse to break any of the Ten Commandments. Read the teachings of Yeshua on obeying the Commandments, not the Ten, the Commandments.

Here below is a description of what many claiming to believe are doing today. I have selected this passage utilizing the CEV, Contemporary English Version, for those who do not like to read in the KJV as do we who hardly ever saw another version. They really do say the same thing.

When Christ Jesus comes as king, he will be the judge of everyone, whether they are living or dead. So with God and Christ as witnesses, I command you

to preach God's message. Do it willingly, even if it isn't the popular thing to do. You must correct people and point out their sins. But also cheer them up, and when you instruct them, always be patient.

The time is coming when people won't listen to good teaching. Instead, they will look for teachers who will please them by telling them only what they are itching to hear.

If you say the better way is to discard listening to how the written law expresses love and just do it how you, as an individual sees and determines love then you aren't using the better way, you are using your own willfulness that you hide, sometimes even from yourself, under the cloak of saying it is the Holy Spirit who guides you. The Holy Spirit and God, as God speaks to us in scripture, are in complete agreement.

I did use Scripture. 1John2:27 Rom 5:5 and I'll throw in Rom chap 8 for good measure, speaking of our freedom IN CHRIST and not Rom 7 IN THE LAW.

Why didn't Christ correct him? Why did He tell the rich young ruler to keep the Commandments and then go above and beyond?

Luk 17:10 So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.

Because Commandment keeping is just the basis, one has to go above and beyond just keeping the Commandments.
