My sister called me this morning, and the second thing (after "Hey") that she said was, "I'm so bored! Fix it!"

Maybe this is just a pet peeve of mine; bored/boring people. Maybe I'm just talented at occupying myself. Maybe these bored/boring people are just being lazy.

Whatever the case, I kind of snapped at her- this is not the first time she's done this. In fact, it's a nearly daily event. She calls me because she's bored. And I can't make any sense of it, because she's a mom of a five year old, she recently moved into a new place, she has an energetic dog, and she lives in town where there are numerous things to do.

Maybe this is so irritating to me because I see online all the time younger people talking about how bored they are.

And then the excuses! People give them ideas, and they argue that they can't do any of "that stuff" because of such-and-such a reason. With the exception of being physically unable to get up and do something, IS there any valid reason not to? All the time?

There is a certain level of laziness/boredom that I can tolerate patiently from others- and even less tolerance for myself and my family. I purposely don't surround myself with bored people. I would, in fact, say I discriminate against them to some degree.

Do constant complaints of boredom/lack of desire to GET UP and do something bother anyone else?

When i was a kid and i would say to my dad "I'm boooored!" He'd always say "Get used to it, that's life" So i started finding ways to occupy myself.

I do find people who complain of being bored obnoxious. Unless you are a mime trapped in a box there are plenty of things you could do instead of complaining.

Hahaha yes! Even mimes don't...complain...right, nevermind.

My mom always came up with chores for me if I said I was bored- I quit whining about it when I was 6 or 7, because...dishes? Really? Think I'll just go on outside and destroy stuff.

...I still do that. Huh.

Bored people are boring people. The word "bored" isn't allowed at my house. I never realized how annoying it was until other people's kids would come over and start chirping about it. I don't know if it's lack of creativity, or perhaps always being SO busy with scheduled entertainments that you can't come up with anything when you have free time...?

Ok, let me add these things to my list for my goal of inching my way into the hearts of Nod My Head and MissCris...

#215 - don't get bored
216 - don't act bored
217 - don't act like a mime (that ones gonna hurt)
218 - don't bring up Nod's dad in conversation

300 more and I'm gonna make my move. They'll never know what hit them.

I don't have enough hours in the day to be bored. There are always a thousand things I could be doing, always. Which also means I suck at going to sleep. Even last night, I was doing laundry at 230am and I was like, "(Liamson) just stop."

I get bored when I'm stuck at someone else's house watching tv. (I hate watching TV, cause its boring) Or if I'm at the DMV and there is no one to talk to.

Bored is a state of mind, it has little to do with having nothing to do to occupy yourself. You can feel bored even when you have so many things to do if you have no interest in doing them

Exactly! Always stuff that needs done.

And teeeeveeee...ugh. My mother-in-law has been watching The Waltons and Little House on the Prairie and country music videos for the last week. All. Day. Long. Today she's started a new job and I'm all, "I'm FREEEEE!"

I get what you're saying, but for me, when I simply don't feel like doing the things that need done, it's not so much "feeling bored" as it is "wishing I could just go back to sleep" :D

Television is just a conspiracy, dating back to...whenever TV was invented...designed to warp our minds and turn us into a bunch of Potato Heads :D

...there's a couple shows I like to watch, in the evening. But I'm almost always still doing other stuff.

I'm kidding about the conspiracy thing.

Stop getting busy being bored and start getting busy living life. If my mouth is the only thing moving? whats the rest of the body doing? I know some people who are professional at talking..im professional at listening. Not a bad thing but there are times when the mouth talks the ear to death and the ear bores the mouth to death .. perhaps more movement in the body as a whole will balance things out ")

(I wanted to say this but Liamson beat me to it :)):

I wish I had the TIME to BE bored. My "To Do" lists are so long that I'm going to have to start writing them out on rolls of toilet paper. I ALWAYS have something to do.

From the time I was a kid, I have always carried an "Activity Kit" with me. It always consists of: something to read, such as books and magazines (even at theme parks, I carry pocket-sized devotional books to read in line, because I'm usually alone), an extra book or magazine just in case it's going to be a really LONG trip or event to have to bear through, some kind of reading material with pictures because the colors and emotions they emit soothe my nerves, paper (both plain and decorated stationery), and several varieties of writing instruments (such as a rainbow assortment of gel pens--my grown-up answer to crayons ;)).

Even when I was little and we were going to Grandma and Grandpa's for the day, I always carried my "Activity Kit" with me and I now even pack one in my car. Whenever I get stuck in a waiting room or in line... You'll find me reading or writing a letter to someone. (This might be helpful for anyone looking to carve out time to read the Bible--carry a pocket devotional and read it while waiting for the doctor, dentist, daycare to let out, etc.) You could put me on a desert island alone and you'd find me writing things in the sand (though I admit I'd be lost without a way to send it to someone. I'd better hope the island has a lot of trees because I foresee making lots of paper and writing utensils... Hopefully there will also be lot of empty bottles left behind, or a lost flock of carrier pigeons, in order for me to send my messages away to people!)

I actually become very antsy and restless if I'm anywhere WITHOUT my activity kit... I love spending time with friends doing whatever. But my little kit is a "safeguard" just in case doing whatever means watching reruns of "Pawn Stars" for the umpteenth time.

(Which means I may also have to reluctantly admit that my activity kit might be more like a security blanket than anything else.)

Actually, I always do have a (water) bottle on hand, so one of these days I may have to throw in a squeaky toy... though I will refrain from adding a binky, I promise.
