Answer: Start a conversation about Christ.
Okay, I admit that is a little extreme, but you have to see where I'm going with this? Why is it that when I'm around Christians - the LAST thing they want to talk about is Christ? Football, the weather, entertainment bibble-babble seems to take over most chats. I understand that in this life, we meet all sorts of Christians in different parts of their walk- but NEVER want to chat about Him? I also understand that many Christians can be sensitive, and stand firm to their doctrine-but absolutely NO attempt at intellectual banter? This saddens me. Even the people who claim to be "Followers"- cut our texts short when I start up a note about God? I have gone to many different Bible study groups in my years, and somehow the conversation always leads back to the latest Hollywood flick.
Are we in trouble?
Any thoughts?

I haven't witnessed this. Most Christians I know have no problem talking about Christ and the Bible. I don't think there's anything wrong with discussing other parts of life.

You forgot food, we talk about food a lot. Especially chocolate, mmmmmm...

Okay, okay, I'll be serious. I have not observed anybody cutting a conversation short when the topic turns to matters of God. The cause is probably something else. Perhaps when you "start up a note about God" you do so in a way that others perceive as adversarial. Or maybe you just need to find some better friends.

Was that a room full of Christians or a room full of those who only claim the name of Christ?

Lynx is perhaps onto it, here. Besides, I thought this was going to be a fun thread with answers like advising that anyone who failed to lock their car when they arrived at church will be finding a brown paper bag of Yeller Squash in the passenger seat upon returning to their vehicle. (Some of the members at my parents church are Hard Core gardeners, so I've seen this really happen!)

Anyone else want to Ant-Juke this with fun answers?

How do you clear out a room full of clones of me? Screen all of the Twilight movies there or hold Maths-heavy lectures. I'd be out in no time!

I enjoy discussing Christ, I don't enjoy arguing about him. I've been part of many great discussions about the Lord and his love also his human traits. I've also heard heated discussions about Christ when someone seems to proclaim they know everything and you don't. I don't take part in those.

I dont know if this is remotely close......I think people panic.....some think there will be a test or exam......lol
It seems some feel unworthy or ill prepared ......feeling the lack against some who seem so much more
knowledgeable in the Word.......I have this friend God has given me.....sometimes I wish I could be as committed
to God as much as she is......after my accident she would come sit with me and visit......funny we are close...
but it seems we never actually sat down and discussed Scripture....I asked her why....we go to chirch...we work together...
help others together.....but never sharing one on one......and she told me this...jo, you just seem so much ahead of me...I feel
dumb when im around you........I just laughed so hard.......you see....I thought the same thing about her......we were
intimidated by an illusion...or our doubt of ourselves....
If thats not it........im gonna have to agree with the snack thing .....hmh....not even a cracker.....

Because most are 'hypocrites or lukewarm Christians. They have their left foot in the secular pool and the right foot in the religious pool.

I said it many times on CC and I will say it again, "the raptured Church will be quite small."

Ahh.....all great responses. I should have been more specific. Like, why doesn't anyone REALLY want to talk about the deeper things of our Lord? Instead of them realizing that with in-depth conversation, we can now educate/help each other to a better understanding of what our Lord is trying to tell us. I guess it just seems most people are content with the appetizers of small talk, while I'm always in a rush to get the main course of deeper Bible talk? Who knows? God Bless.

Why are you being so jugdemental? How do you know other peoples hearts? Be your interpretation the truth?

let's see...

1) most people dont want to 'talk about' Christ. They want to prove they know more, or prove their way is better than others.
2) not everyone is comfortably discussing such deep things in large groups. one or two close friends sure, but not in a group of regular people.
3) nothing is actually wrong with discussing other topics.

Well, all humans are "in trouble" outside of Christ. The question becomes, when we are in-Christ, what do we do for healthy fellowship?

For example, if I go bowling with fellow believers, does that mean we all must talk about the Lord Jesus during the game?
Would God be upset at me for not talking about the Lord Jesus at the bowling alley?

Another example, I totally treasure the husband God has given me because my Moose is a godly, prudent man, yet we do have extra-curricular conversations (politics, economy, college for the teens, etc). Albeit, the Lord Jesus continues to reigns in our hearts and in our home. ...just sayin' :)

I think there could be several reasons why people are uncomfortable discussing deeper things of Christ.

1. Fear of disagreement
2. Fear of appearing ignorant
3. Not feeling prepared for the topic that's introduced
4. Feeling safer with "small talk" due to time constraints
5. Not having enough to really delve into a topic. ("Isn't Jesus Good?" kind of leaves room for "Yes He Is" and not much else.)

Interestingly, our sermon today was on "soul communication" between couples, friends, family. Reaching out to people on an intimate "soul" level. Moving the conversation DEEPER than small talk. Leaving yourself open for questions or further explanations to get to the root of a matter. Listening to what people are saying. Being vulnerable and transparent with others.

These are things we need to be doing more of. But maybe not with everyone. There's a level of trust that needs to be built in order to open up that way. So that takes time. Maybe what you are seeing (small talk) is actually just the beginning stages of a relationship that will lead to "soul" communication. It just needs to continue so that trust can be built and others will feel safe to open up about deeper things.

And all of that in itself is not bad per say. But when IS a good/right time to talk God in general? After the football game? When the chores are all done? At 8:03- after dessert, and about 27 mins or so before our favorite program comes on? On Sundays? I was merely stating that most of the Christians I have run into over the course of my life, want to only talk about it---when all other conversation topics have exhausted themselves. Now, maybe it's my location?, maybe the people I am around? But I have traveled-and been to many a churches--and by just observing (not going at others in a combat stance, with verbal guns drawn )- and this just seems to be the case. Yes, they will chat about Him, but only until personal doctrine gets in the way, and instead of talking it out, like the Lord instructs-they run. Hmm? God Bless.

I only run when insults start flying. If I can learn something that's wonderful. I talk to one of the older members of my church a lot about Jesus because I trust him. He and his late wife taught Sunday school for years and now that I do I want his guidance. He and my Mom are people I know I can discuss things about Jesus with and if I've got something wrong they'll loving direct me the right way.

They run? In matters of religion and politics it is usually prudent to cut short a conversation if they disagree. "A man convinced against his will / Is of his own opinion still." If we're talking about God and you and I disagree about something I'm probably not going to change your mind and you're probably not going to change mine.

Run? That implies being afraid of a topic. Who runs?

It's probably because they have something hidden in them they have done or what I learned is like they are not followers of Jesus but a fan, meaning like they will only talk about them sundays or do a song or something but in public they keep it hidden and are a shame of something.. so yeah I've experience some people who are ok with talking about Jesus at church but not in public..kinda sad :/
