Statistics are against you on this one. Statistically younger offenders who end up in prison end up joining prison gangs for protection and come out more hardened criminals than they were when they first went in.
That is because prison has become just a housing unit for offenders.
In most places they have taken out the whole correction part out of the correctional facilities. They spend two much time letting these guys just sit around in prison with nothing to do but associate with other offenders, so of course they would learn more criminal traits.
Instead they should be better funded to help give these people learning experiences, and work field traits.
They instead just lock them away, let most of them just sit around, and when they are released make it pretty much to hard for them to adapt back into society.

No training, no help, and jobs that are hard to come by these days that make it harder because will not hire somebody with a felony on their record. How is one suppose to live, so instead people just want to take and lock them away forever or already criminalize them before they commit a crime which is not Christian-like.

This is true, pending on location, here in the south, it's more of a dog eat dog world. We don't do gangs, we did self, more about where you from here, at least that's the way it was, I do know guys gang affiliated these last few years, but even the bloods and crips chill together these days..Yes, prison brings more connections to a dark world, it really depends on how weak minded you are, a lot of mind games, it's still up to the individual though, if they want to come home, and keep trying to get a job and so fourth. I really think there should be better programs to get guys jobs once they get out, and I'm not talking " slave labor " work release programs, where the city collects, I mean real jobs where they get the training and our promised jobs and keep their money. Choices are harder already for a convicted felon, and I really don't think certain charges should be held against you for the remainder of your life... I believe in second chances, how can one have a real second chance if every where he goes he has to say yeah, I did prison time for theft, or selling drugs, nobody wants to trust you. It's easy to go back to the streets, no application necessary. This world is not built for second chances, thankful there is a just God though, that forgives and forgets.

Both states that I have lived in as an adult (CA & CO) have a myriad of programs available to prisoners ranging from education (both GED and college level), occupational training, etc. Unfortunately most of them choose to not take advantage of those programs. Prisoners who make the choice to turn their lives around and succeed upon their release typically do, but most of them choose to return to their former lives because they don't want to deal with the hastle of being responsible upstanding citizens.

I do agree that it is more difficult (not impossible) for ex-cons to find work, but those who are determined to succeed usually do. I work for a company that has employed countless ex-cons over the years, many of them hired while they were in a halfway house, but by far the majority of them haven't worked out for long because they chose to fall back into old life patterns that got them into trouble in the first place.

I'm not saying you can't do any of that, I got my G.E.D, then got a little time back tutoring others.. But once home, on parole, we don't have the same opportunities, so you not only have to do the time, but have to drag this with you the rest of your life. I wouldn't mind the government keeping record, but after ten years or so, it should be dropped from public, but hey, if I knew Clinton as governor I could be pardoned right ? It's all a crabs in a barrel, I've had jobs worked 60 hr weeks 20hr overtime, after the job was done though, they tried moving me even further out over a hour, when I was already waking up at 5:30, for the same money, some people get home and have a brother or father, or friend to get them connected .. All depends on what God puts in front of them, and what's on their mind, I was still dealing, nothing really bothered me, had money, since being saved though, I'm not going to say I've tried everything, but go wake up at 5am to sit at a temp service for people to start packing in and then watch them all leave to go on a job, because they've been there longer... The struggle is real.. I've had plenty of wild situation though in between, almost went in and bought a place that spins blood, numbers weren't right, fell through, almost went in on car biz with a friend, who already owns a collision center, didn't work out, a lot of strange stuff, my life's anything but normal at this point, I eat good though, I know something will happen good, it's in Gods hands, I know what I'm not going to do though, and that's return to my vomit. I could have money, that's not important to me anymore, I don't live my life to make money, I live to survive and make sure ends are met, I'm not selling who I am for nobody, and I'm not conforming to this world, I've got what money can't buy, I've been approached and I know who I am, God will work it out, it is as it's supposed to be,

As for Mike here though, it's over... and that's just the way it is.

I've seen guys that big lay out smaller men and even two from a group of five who weighed a buck fifty maiming one of them with stomps afterwards.

I don't expect any police officer to take the chance that the 6' 5" 289 lb adult male who just punched them in the face so hard he "didn't know if I'd be able to withstand another hit like that" to follow your expectations of his training which aren't how police train for these situations.

They don't run backwards and try to shoot a leg out hoping they get one before the second punch lands rendering them unconscious. This isn't a Dirty Harry movie, it's real life. You're being unreasonable.

"Police officers are instructed to aim for center mass," NYPD spokesman Paul Browne explains. "You are looking to stop the individual, and that is the largest target." Center mass means the "head and torso," and a former commander of the NYPD's firearms training section says, "You can’t just shoot to aim for a leg or an arm; it just doesn’t work consistently."

I've seen guys that big, get laid out in one punch maybe weighing a buck fifty... The cop was intimidated by his size, understandable, but he got the ups on the kid, " gun drawn ", his training should have gave him the right shots for that incident, I'm pretty sure head shots " weren't by the book " but the cop did what he felt he had to do to protect his life, I'm ok with that. I personally would've shot at his knees to buckle him, he keeps coming then shoulder joints.. I run out by the time he gets to me, " no more gun ", and I can't handle tussling with a guy, with 8, 10 bullets in him till back up arrives... I shouldn't be a cop, period

Thank you. We have a mutual respect for one another but disagree widely on this situation. One aspect of that disagreement is that you see this as a racial matter while I see it as a criminal matter.

The injustice here in my view is that a good police officer who killed an assailant in self-defense is being brandished as a "corrupt racist who murdered an unarmed child" when that narrative is as real as the fictional story of Disney's 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.'

All Michael Brown had to was live a moral life, instead of attacking a police officer and trying to disarm him shortly after committing a strong-arm robbery, and he'd be sitting in his living room watching the Missouri Tigers play this Friday on television.

I return the sentiments ageofknowlege just wait for all the facts as we only have some of them the rest conveniently were not taken into account. Adamantly so this kid made tragic errors in judgment no doubt but he was unarmed and this was a trained officer of the law. I defend only the position of the killings of young black males is tragic as it is for any person killed. Race is the issue and injustice that picture is clear. I'm in agreement with the wrong on all parts but my goodness a generation of youth is being jailed or killed in front of our eyes and the grand jury is not so grand unless you consider all facts. And the fact is a9 whites three blacks seems like inequality to me discussing race facts.

I'm sitting here watching the news coverage from Ferguson. I've never seen anything like this. This rioting and looting is deeply troubling to me. I understand being upset, and peaceful protesting is something I can tolerate. What's going on there though is absolutely troubling to me. I cannot understand how this anger and lashing out in this way is doing anything but causing people less and less respect for people.

I hope people come to their senses soon and this is all calmed down.

Yes, it is sad but nothing compare to the riots in the late 60's and early 70's.

Furthermore pastac, I 100% guarantee you that if the races were reversed and the known facts the same: I would have exactly the same view.

ALL LIVES MATTER!! Whether black, white, red or purple.. But when it comes to the po-po, they're all the same racist pigs. A crime gets committed, if it's an unknown perp, automatically they assume it must have been committed by a BLACK dude.. like people of other colors don't commit crimes, also? what the... ??
Was this post directed at me? And are you claiming all police are racist pigs?

You think I meant the tweet "black lives matter" is what I found sickening? You couldn't discern that what I found sickening was the irony that it was PLANNED PARENTHOOD who tweeted "black lives matter", the group responsible for the slaughter of millions of black babies through the holocaust of abortion?

Shame on you. My apologies if I misinterpreted your post, but I don't think I did.

the thugs looting and burning buildings are domestic terrorists period. it is time for the cops to quit playing nice and to treat the terrorists as terrorists.
Agree! but let not forget that the first organized 'terrorist group' in the USA was the Ku Klux Klan that was allowed to flourish for nearly 100 years before the federal government decide it was time to eradicate its power.

The federal government knew the impact of the terrorist acts by the Klans against people of color ... but chose to tirn a blinded eye to the activities in the Southern states because of politics.

Why am I bringing this up? because the racial divide goes back a couple hundreds of years. The federal government had a chance to deal with immigration issues with Mexico hundreds of years ago but chose not to .... because of politics. We have two explosive issues: race & immigration that should have been resolved nearly 150 & 200 years ago, respectively.

It is amazing how history can comeback and bite one in the butt.

Yeah I can only imagine what it must have been like back then. Its one thing to look back at pictures, and see the history of it but a completely different experience when actually living it I'm sure. Last night was very surreal for me in many ways. Opened my eyes to just how much this world needs a Savior.

Tell you the truth... I don't think all this is about this teen or this cop, I think it's about disarming police, putting in more government control. Idk... Could be wrong, but something's stinking... Can you smell it ?

It was the United States government that proclaimed the Ku Klux Klan as a terrorist group.

I think she did misinterpret Penn, it's ok, but I did get it... The irony right ? While they slaughter black children everyday with a smile, saying it's their right!!!

How is 9 bwhites and 3 blacks an equality when african americans are only 15-20% of the general population yet made up 25% of the grand jury? Too many?

The fact is Michael Brown was a thug and behaving like a thug. He tried to take Officer Wilson's gun and shoot the cop. Officer Wilson shot Michael in fear of his own safety. He was not in the wrong at all for what he did. And most of these people rioting could care less about the victim. They just want an excuse to wreak havoc and tear things up. They say they want justice. How is burning down 25 buildings and ruining so many peoples businesses and people's employment that had nothing at all to do with the shooting justice? Even Michael's father was seen yelling out to burn everything down. The incident never was about race, a white cop shooting a black man. It was about a cop doing his job and in my opinion he did it. People want to cry foul and refuse to accept the truth. It's pitiful how some people act.
