I was a little shocked to find this because earlier this morning I was contemplating why God made such a beautiful world, but then put evil-hearted, selfish, imperfect mankind in charge of it. And as if that wasn't enough, he let the devil loose in it until he returns.. i even thought about starting a thread..
Well, humanity wasn't originally evil-hearted, selfish and imperfect when God put Adam and Eve (the first two people from who all are descended) in charge and blessed them to take care of creation. So there's that. Besides you can answer these things up to a certain point, but then beyond that, you have to just say, it's one of the many mysteries of God.

I went to the DMV to give them entirely too much money to register my 2005 VW Jetta. I waited in line like a good Californiaian at the non appointment kiosk because I had managed not to lose the registration notice. I waited a long time, actually because the old dude in front of me kept reentering the same information, and the kiosk kept repeating quite loudly "I'm sorry, I cannot find the vehicle you're looking for. Would you like to try again?".

Sigh.

This went on for about a fifteen minutes.

"I'm sorry, I cannot find the vehicle you're looking for. Would you like to try again?"

At least there was a cute baby who giggled every single time the kiosk said it, which made everyone else laugh, so the baby laughed again, and it was adorable.

Anyway, Old Dude finally gave up, and I stepped up to the plate. I scanned the slip and a huge red box popped up. Apparently, I need to smog my car. Now, I read that blasted notice! The area where it's supposed to tell me to smog my car was vague. So, I read the new rules on the back of the notice. From what I gathered there, it sounded like I didn't have to smog my car until next year.

What did I learn?

*My state government is stupid.
*Government writings are written poorly on purpose.
*Kiosks are too loud but entertaining if a baby is nearby.
*I'm paying WAY too much for a 2005 car.
*Arnold Schwarzenegger was a horrible governor because he started most of this DMV nonsense.
This is why I renew my registration online (with a credit card). I didn't know they automated the DMV though. That's scary!!

I'm feeling really emotionally/spiritually attacked tonight for some reason. Nothing significant happened today. It was actually a good day overall, but for some reason I feel more alone tonight than normal.

I'm glad you replied to that :)

I would also add that in the way you worded it, zeroturbulence, you make it sound like God created the world, set Satan free on it, and then left, but the reality is that Satan is an ant in the hands of God. This past week I watched two different movie series where there was an evil character who was at least very close to being as powerful as the good character. We're trained to think that evil has more power than it really does. God is more present in this world than Satan is, and He is masterful at redeeming the brokenness in it on both the minute and the grand scale. The cool thing is that as believers, we already know that we're on the winning team. It's just a matter of deciding whether or not we're going to believe that and live according to that truth :)

John 14:25 .) These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.
26 .) But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
27 .) Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

First off i know some things i mention in this are not viewed as being wrong by some Christians, this is not the point of my post so please do not pick apart or turn these things into a debate, instead focus on the overall need being sought out in the post.

I have a friend, who i have talked about before, who is heavily into new age/eastern philosophies. She does the whole crystals/rocks thing, meditation, yoga, talks about vibrations, energy, Reiki, expanded counsciousness, etc...
The ironic thing is i believe she also sees herself as a Christian, or perhaps Catholic. She's not come out flatly and said this, but she briefly covered a bit of her spiritual background and i'm pretty positive she sees herself in this manner.
We have discussed the bible and though she doesn't read it, she does seem to believe in it. She's pretty open minded and i was able to make her rethink some things she has claimed, by using scripture. Such as Buddah was just that regions version of Jesus. I used the bible to point out that Jesus is the only way to God. Asked her why the bible says God has one son, not many. And why does Christ need to die for our sins, when Buddha teaches works and didn't require a death. She admitted, after this, that her thought on this was wrong according to the bible.
So take note, she does not view herself as a witch or any such thing.

I have a bit of an understanding about such beliefs, but have not personally delved deeply into them. But i get the gist of them. Some aspects i feel i can disprove, but there are certain aspects of what she believes that i have no idea how to counter as i know of nothing biblically that teaches on them. The 'energy' and 'vibrations'. Use of crystals and rocks, for examples.

Is there anyone that has a past dealing with these beliefs that can provide a good, clear, argument against some of these more difficult aspects? Or someone well studied in debating these specific types of beliefs. If so please message me privately rather than answering publicly as i don't want it to turn into a debate.

I'm not interested in answers such as 'just pray for them' or rants about the evilness of these beliefs. Or how i shouldn't seek to learn about what others believe. Not debates on whether yoga/meditation are wrong or not. Nor am i looking for a history lesson, as i said i have some basic knowledge already. I need specific answers to some of the more difficult sorts of belief i've stated. If you can provide the kinds of answers i'm looking for then responding to me will be a waste of your time as i will not acknowledge inane responses or argumentative attitudes.

Exactly, Chandler! We get this false impression that Satan and his ilk are more powerful than they really are. Sure, we should be discerning and test the spirits, but if we're in Christ, we shouldn't be fearing the Enemy. Think about this comparison. If God is more powerful than a nuclear bomb, then Satan is even less powerful than a slingshot.

I've sort of fallen into New Age thinking and seen some Buddhist beliefs/teachings. Can't say I have much knowledge to the point that I'm willing to debate. I'm assuming that she doesn't know the Bible so well, at least not the New Testament?

I'm not entirely sure the extent of he knowledge. I'm fairly certain it's to too deep, but she has surprised me a time or two, so probably more than you might assume.

One of my big beefs about working with the public is how entitled so many people think they are. And, when asking for help, they always assume they know more than the person they're seeking to help them. I appreciate polite, patient customers because they're a rare breed these days.

Several years ago I went with some friends to serve in some soup kitchens, which was something I'd never done before. I was amazed, in a bad way, at how many of the patrons, who WERE RECEIVING A FREE MEAL, put up a fight at every turn. they complained because we had chicken and they wanted ribs. They complained because they wanted to be able to help themselves to everything (an extra this, an extra that) but because supplies are limited (it's a soup kitchen, not a freaking buffet, people!), everything was rationed to feed as many people as possible. They argued as if they were in a 4-star restaurant and expected to be waited on hand and foot.

My friends, who have worked with the homeless for many years, told me that's the secret behind many who are homeless--not all, of course, but many--believe they are too good to be working for anyone and won't take any kind of direction, which is why they don't have jobs, and of course, in turn, are homeless. I'm certainly not knocking anyone who has fallen to hard times, but I know for me, it was a life-changing experience. And I was in awe that my friends, after many years of seeing this, still serve every person with a genuine smile and a warm heart.

I live in an area now where panhandlers actually fight over the "good corners" and you often see the same people there everyday. I sometimes get to talk with a woman who works in local social services that regularly talks to and serves the homeless here and she said that many of the people they try to give care packages to refuse them--because they don't have the "right" kind of products or exactly what they wanted. She told me about one man who refused their help because they were giving out a free hygiene pack with a 3-blade razor... and he insisted that he only used 4-blade razors, and only a specific brand.

Sigh. I've come to believe that a good percentage of people's problems, including poverty, isn't so much a matter of money, but rather, pride.

Which is something I have to remind myself of as well because when my attitude turns south, I'm probably not very far from turning into the same thing.
having spent a lot of time serving the homeless (and assisting others who face the kind of crises faced by the homelessness) i was kind of dismayed to read this, and even sadder to think that this might be a message that is universally accepted by others.

while i do agree with you that part of the sinful condition of man is a sense of entitlement, i must confess that i seldom see someone who doesn't have their own pockets of respectable sins and "entitlements", myself included.

and i'm really sorry that your experience serving the homeless led you to make this kind of conclusion. when i lived with my grandparents, we cooked one (VERY) large meal every week that we served at the shelter, and as you said, people were hungry, eager, and often interested in more than one serving.

at this moment, i am kind of humbled and grateful for the fact that my grandparents were such an influence on me in this area. they were from humble beginnings but saved and scrimped to earn a nest egg. however, even with their hard work and sacrifice, they never stopped working and serving in missions and homeless shelters, because they knew that so much of their prosperity was not at their own hand, but in part, from great generosity and blessing.

with love, i would say, we are in a very, VERY dangerous place when we are willing to blame people's misfortunes upon themselves. you may know someone personally, and be able to look over their shoulder, watching them fail in life's critical choices, but don't for a minute believe that you know better, and that your success or freedom from homelessness is at YOUR hand or because of your accomplishments.

what i was struck by, even at a young age was the despair, the sadness, the plain frustration, and on occasion, yes, even anger. it was never directed towards me, or anyone in particular, but i knew it was anger at the situation they were in. the fact that there was no day off from homelessness or needing the assistance that likely few (or none) of us have ever experienced.

did you know that a large majority of homeless struggle with some form of mental illness? have you ever been in a situation figuring out numbers and having to break to a woman who is trying to break free from "they system" and you have to tell her that her "new possible job" will cause her to have even LESS to get by with, and that doesn't count the expenses associated with figuring out transportation to and from work?

here's what pains me. is realizing that for so much of my life, i have been fortunate to know that even on my worst day, if i was somehow rendered homeless and unable to take care of myself, i have at least one family member who would help me, or support me, and help me "crawl back onto my feet again".

imagine what it must be like to desire a new chance or opportunity, and know that your entire family is just as bad, or worse as you are. imagine knowing that your family will be coming to visit YOU for money if you were to ever have more than a couple nickels to rub together. imagine how different each of your lives would be if you were born into a family that never had anything extra and your big meal of the day was the lunch you ate at school? imagine if there never was anyone in your family to give you a hand, or even come looking for you if you never show up or are heard from again?

i think it's way too easy and convenient to indict the homeless (or anyone, for that matter) for such things as pride, laziness, or whatever self-chosen logic we decide. i think there is something really dangerous when we find ourselves with full bellies and upon comfortable couches deciding the ills and failures of others. the fact of the matter, this is a complex and multi-faceted problem, and never just as simple as we'd like to make it.

yes, it would be easy to simply blame them because then i'd have a good reason to stop giving, volunteering, sharing with others, or it would let me off the hook for a lot of other things. one of my biggest follies when i was younger was falling into the trap of thinking that my successes or accomplishments were mine--as if EARNED my blessings.

no, it doesn't work that way. when i meet a young woman who was born to a mother drug-addicted and homeless, fatherless, and molested by two different "boyfriends" who has then found herself in rehab for drinking and meth by the age of 15 (this is an actual young girl, mind you, not a hypothetical) whose life has already been markedly impacted by many choices she never made. oh, and by the way, she has a bi-polar diagnosis as well.

she isn't unusual from a lot of the people i've gotten to know who are homeless.

another guy, who lives at the homeless shelter trying to put men and women back to work and has come out to do work at my house (hired through the program) has told me about how he grew up in a very bad, drug filled environment, until he reached the age of 15 when his mother overdosed and the kids all had to go to the foster system. he is a recovering alcoholic who has been homeless most of his life. he is currently trying to get a GED but has been frustrated by the fact that many companies will not hire homeless folks, or folks without transportation that is reliable. here in my city, our bus system is lacking quite a bit of coverage.

while approximately 64% of homeless are suffering from addiction to substances. depending upon the statistics you read, approximately 38% of homeless are physically dependent upon alcohol. which of you have gone through withdrawal from alcohol?

for an daily-drinking alcoholic can threaten your life, but is accompanied with all kinds of horrible symptoms, including headaches, shakiness, sweating, vomiting, nausea, anxiety, and insomnia. i once read that a decent percentage of homeless people who struggle with alcoholism are going through some form of withdrawal at any given time. if i were experiencing those symptoms, i can't imagine how pleasant i'd be, either.

with all love, and respect, i'd humbly remind you that, there, but for the grace of God, go i. and i apologize for this lengthy reply in streams. : )

Ugly, I'm not sure, mate. But I do know this much. The New Age practices and beliefs are counterfeits of the one true God's awesome power and nature, so there is actually some truth to the unexplained. Many people just tap into the wrong source (anything that's not of God). The spiritual world is closer than a hair's-breadth to the physical world. There's a lot about the world that we don't know or that we know in part, but understand through pagan ideals, rather than through the lens of the Bible.

Yeah, sorry, but this was the kind of response i said i was not looking for. I already have some idea of these beliefs, i need someone that can speak to specifics, not just generalizations.

I have to say this to the lady who opened this thread...

This thread is arguably the most visited of all the history of Christian Chat foundation.
Thosands and thousands of users write here their opinions and clear thoughts of themselves

No thread has reached an almost entire community of users into one forum as this one. It is astonishing.

Sorry I couldn't be of any help, mate. I just wasn't sure eg. there are plenty of Christians who think things like auras are just of the enemy, not realising their has to be a godly original to counterfeit.

I'm feeling really emotionally/spiritually attacked tonight for some reason. Nothing significant happened today. It was actually a good day overall, but for some reason I feel more alone tonight than normal.

I've had those times, too. It's like it just hits you out of nowhere. I do have some triggers that can make it worse, but other times it's just like "Whoa where did this come from."

In those times, sometimes I wallow and lay on my bed and cry. Other times I try to change my mind set and worship instead by playing guitar and singing. Either way, it's a good time to be with the Protector of our hearts in those cases.

i would appreciate prayer too. i've been really struggling with energy, and being rested. normally i have almost an unlimited supply of energy, and lately, i just find myself needing a lot more sleep, and wanting to reach for those things that are designed to perk us up, i.e. caffeine.

i have a mild disorder than leaves me (often) in various stages of anemia, and that might very well be part of it. i had a pretty hard week a couple weeks ago, and i feel like i've never recovered from it.

thanks in advance for prayer.

as to my sparseness here on the forum, it's largely due to that. and that i don't feel like i have a lot to say. but you all remain in my thoughts and prayers. : )

But my question really is why didn't God just let the world be perfect as He created it?

It would be like someone building a perfect invention, let's say a robot. It's absolutely perfect, never needs batteries, never makes mistakes, etc... Now why would the inventor put a virus in the robot's software that can come close (but not too close) to completely ruining it? That's what I'm talking about..
