I am both a leader and a follower. But as Shouryu stated, effective leaders are often effective followers. I don't remember where I heard this, but it has stuck with me since, "People often think to be a leader means you have more people serving you, but in actual fact to lead effectively means to serve more people" or something along those lines.
I was very comfortable with following for so long until the later years of University. I ended up being in different classes to my regular friends, so every time I was put in a small group activity or group assignment, I often found no one stepping up to lead so I volunteered. I actually found out that I really enjoy leading. I realised you can follow and lead at the same time! I enjoyed sensing out people's strengths and hearing them voice themselves, then when it was my turn to pull it together, draw out their strengths and encourage them to step up in that area.
I am a qualified teacher now and I work in a Kindergarten room. To be honest, even with 4-5 year old children, I still follow them at times. I enjoy empowering them to step up and lead the direction of the learning according to their interest. I can't help but smile when they start playing 'teacher' to their friends.
I put this up on facebook awhile ago, but one morning I lined my Kindergarten children up and one by one washed their feet. Why? Because it has become more apparent to me that to teach and lead means to serve in love.
