Hey Everyone,

For as much as we talk about food here in Singles, I was wondering what kinds of unique likes, dislikes, and habits you all have when it comes to your eating preferences. Do you have any food rituals that you have to follow? (I know a lot of people don't like it when their foods are touching each other on the plate or get mixed together.)

I honestly never really thought of myself as a picky eater until I got together with some friends a while back. I guess when you always eat by yourself, you never realize that some of the habits you've picked up might be a little different from everyone else's!

For instance:

* I don't like raw tomatoes. At all. However, I love tomato sauces (such as spaghetti and pizza) and soups.

* I don't like slabs or chunks of meat, which is one reason why I rarely eat meat anymore. I just find the texture of a big hunk of meat to be a bit "rubbery", and so I always shred it with a knife and fork before I eat it. I love sandwiches, but prefer that the meat be shaved or very thinly cut.

* I KNOW this one is going to get me in trouble, especially with our friends in TX!!! I don't like ribs or BBQ. *shrugs* I'll eat it, but it's just not my thing.

* My favorite part of a baked pasta casserole is always the very top layer that's a bit "crunchy." And yes, I have been known to threaten people (siblings) just so I could have most of that top layer all to myself.

* I like my burgers without any kind of gross, sloppy sauces. NO ketchup, mayo, or mustard *yuck*! I want just the burger, cheese, and a few select vegetables (hope you don't mind sitting next to someone who just ate raw onions :)). And yes. I also cut my burgers into tiny pieces before eating them, unless it's a fast-food burger.

* I wish I liked a lot of food that are supposed to be really healthy for you, but I just don't, even though I've tried. Oh, how I've tried!!! But... cucumbers... *shudder*. I just can't.

And while I might be considered to be a picky eater, I AM a polite eater. I'll try a bit of most anything put in front of me without complaint (unless it's still moving... or raw.)

What are YOUR special eating habits and preferences?

I usually don't like romantic comedy movies (I'll talk about my picky movie preferences in another thread! :p), but this classic clip from When Harry Met Sally is The Mother of All Picky Eating, which Sally continues to demonstrate throughout the entire movie:

Wow, Kim...with the exception of the no sauce on the burger, I agree with everything you said. Raw tomatoes are kinda nasty to bite into, and taste bad to me...yet I never request no tomatoes when ordering anything that usually has them. I just remove them myself and my husband or kids will most often snag them from me.

Cucumbers are just gross. Not even sure why they're a thing. At all. No.

No to bbq, no thanks to ribs, meh to steak and wings. Yes to thinly sliced or shredded meat that doesn't take razor sharp teeth to bite into.

And the crunchy part of a casserole! The best. My husband calls any bit that crunches even slightly "burnt". I call it "delicious".

But I'm also very polite about eating whatever I'm served by someone, with the exception of seafood or fish...that, I just...no. I've tried to like it, I've tasted a lot of it. But no.

Hard to answer because I want to say I'm not a picky eater but I am. I will plagiarize you though that "I'm a polite eater though and will try anything once." What I'm picky about....

*I won't eat potato salad that has been "cooking" out in the sun for 2 hours and flies have been landing on it.
*I eat meat but don't do well either with thick cuts. I enjoy a good thinner hamburger with LOTS of grilled onions and sauce dripping all over it
*I love chicken but will not eat chicken on the bone...grosses me out. Chicken breasts rock though.
*I don't like dry foods..there has to be a right combo of saucy goodness or at least dipping sauces to accompany a dish. A dry sand which is good example
*I love grilled cheeses sandwiches but they can't be soggy ..must be toasted well same with bacon and hashbrowns crispy please!

I love to try new things/food and to this day have only refused to try one item...oysters ..nope ain't gonna happen.

To quote Sally...I like it the way I like it!

So... does anyone want to watch me and MissCris arm wrestle it out over the top layer of a casserole???

We could sell tickets and make it an event.

Actually... there wouldn't really be an arm wrestling match. I like Cristen so much that I'd bake two casseroles so that we'd each have our own one.

Unless... I made two different casseroles. That we both REALLY liked. And each of us wanted all of that Fine Crunchy Goodness to ourselves...

DING! The fight's back on! (Nah, I love MissCris enough to let her have it. Er... that might not be the best choice of words...)

I'd let her have both casseroles and go out for ice cream instead. And I would even share the ice cream with her later on. I must REALLY like her. ;)

***while SS and MissCris discuss the top layer of the two casseroles they turn around to see one top layer has been scraped off and notice chickwithsticks sitting at table with chipmunk cheeks looking innocent.****

I don't like seafood. I can tolerate fish, but anything else makes me cringe. Crab, lobster, oysters, shrimp, and the like remind me of giant insects. And as soon as I see/hear folks cracking shells, or breaking stuff, I look away. Being a Marylander, you can imagine how odd people find it.

I'm huge on the texture of foods. Slippery and or slimy are a no go. I'd rather have raw tomatoes vs cooked. And large pieces of cooked onions are a no go. I love the flavor of onions though, so I get around it by dicing them till they're almost microscopic and cooking them down.

My biggest food issue is that I love spicy foods. If not spicy, food tastes plain or bland. Most people can't take the level of heat I love in food so it's a let down. Whenever I cook for family, I have my version which is spicy and theirs which is mild-ish.

I don't think I'm very picky. There are things I cannot eat due to health issues (and boy howdy, would I get rid of those if I could... death on a date seems unappealing though).

I'd try just about anything once. But obvs everyone has things they don't eat.

Hmm I don't eat steak, burgers, or seafood. And I don't like condiments at all(ketchup, mayo, mustard).. gross. lol. I don't mind food touching, I'll even mix it up if it's like mac & cheese and mashed potatoes etc lol. But, for example, if I did eat burgers, I would eat the burger, then the fries, then the drink. I only eat one thing at a time and the drink is always last lol. *shrugs* :p

Starting along about July 4th or so and going on till maybe middle of August or so when the vines dry up and you start getting little ones, TOMATO's are about all I got. Now, I'm not sure I heard you right about the tomato and all but there's a lot you can do with a tomato and there's so many of them you have to get creative and that's something I am not going to deny. However, that shouldn't lead someone to this kind of heresy.

So, to get your mind right, let me help remind you what tomato's do because there's tomato sandwiches, tomato soup, tomato salad, tomato sauce, tomato wedges, whole tomato, fried green tomato, tomato chili, tomato preserves, tomato jelly, tomato pie....

images-13.jpeg

stuffed tomato, tomato stir fry, navy beans and tomatos, tomato and yeller squash, tomato and onion, blanched green beans and tomatos, tomato and cottage cheese, bacon lettuce and tomato sandwich...

images-12.jpeg

There's tomato and mustard tarts, tomato and paella, dried tomatos, baked cherry tomato pie, cheese tomato tarts, fried eggs and tomato, salsa for crying out loud, tomato stuffed eggplant, tomato cobbler...

images-11.jpeg

i guess that's about it.

Things I can't do: Boiled okra, any raw or undercooked meats, any "food" from a fast food factory that is not what it claims to be. Boiled okra is just slimy. Medium rare steaks are gross. I can't eat anything that blinked first. Fast food factory "food" is not real food. "100% beef" means it all came from a cow, but it's not all 100% meat. When I cook a burger at home it cooks up different. Chicken nuggets are minced fat, gristle and skin, no meat in them at all. I like food that is food, not ground-up scraps. Scraps I feed to the dog.

Things I can do: Anything else.

Things I like to eat: Anything else.

Pass me a fork please. :D

While we're on the topic of food...

I stopped at the local Shell station to fill up the church bus. While there I mentioned I was thinking about combining a large cheese pizza and a taco salad - chips, meat, nacho cheese, salsa, everything except the lettuce - with three extra cheese layers on top of the whole mess to glue it all together, and bake it well done.

The lady I was talking to jumped at the idea like a cheetah on a trampoline. Seems she had just been discussing making a taco pizza. Hello, hold all further calls, we have a winner! :D

Why do I suddenly have a craving for cheetah...

But only well-done and shredded, please.

You can't have cheetah, it's on the endangered species list. At least I think it is. And Lynx is not on the menu because a lynx shredded the menu. Then he shredded the cook, the stove, several pots and pans, a table, a few chairs and messed up some hairdos. Never try to eat a feline.

I hate bananas, but love banana bread. Don't care for blueberries alone, yet love them in yogurt and muffins. Love raisins on their own, but hate raisin bread.. I will eat dried, sugared dates, but not fresh ones. I eat one food group before going to another.. I love eating peas fresh from the pod, but hate eating cooked peas because they're mushy and gross..lol..

Wow! Just wow! Let them tell that to destitute people who are literally starving.

Okay, enough buzzkill. I'm a dipper. I love dipping my food in any type of sauce. :)

I ate snails for the first time last week. What kind of eater does that make me?
