Edit: I quoted the wrong post so I deleted it.
I think the government does still work that way. I think the solution is to work within the laws, to evangelize, to convert, while being tolerant as Jesus was. It isn't possible to convert all. That's biblical. It's denial of the truth or a lack of knowledge and understanding to think we can. It was never, to my knowledge, written in the bible that we will all believe until the new heaven and earth. At that point, I think there will be a small population on earth compared to prior.
I don't think the U.S. Constitution was set up to follow the bible exactly, but to afford opportunity to believe as we wish in the doctrines of our individual Christian beliefs. At the same time, it seems quite biblical to allow those who are determined to lose their souls to do so at their discretion, as long as they are not infringing upon the rights of the believers.
When the new kingdom is set up on earth, the devil will be gone for a thousand years. There will be great peace on earth until he is released again for a time. So, it looks to me like God allows the devil to tempt us to strengthen our faith or to solidify our unfaithfulness.
The majority of the citizens of this country must understand that concept. They are who have changed this country's laws by their election of it's officials. Infighting is destroying this country, not disbelief. You may be a better Christian than me, but what does that prove, your pride?
