I hold the open for men and women all the time. If I'm the first person going through, I'll very often hold it open for the next person. It's not a gender issue. It's a matter of courtesy. If just seems rude to let the door shut in another's face, if they are really close behind me.

I generally try to hold the door open for elderly and disabled people too.

Im not sure about the guy who goes out of his way to open the car door thing ...my mom married a guy like that and he turned out to be a freak ...it was just a cover ..a mask for others to see. Since then and with all the womens lib stuff ...I don't really see the car door thing as healthy?
I have to agree with you here. I see it both ways.

I've never expected a man to hold the car door open for me. Why? Because I can do it myself. It has nothing to do with feminism, but I was raised not to expect someone to do for me what I can do for myself. When women drive alone, with children or with other women who opens the car door? The woman opens the door for herself, so why is that somehow different because a man is in the car?

I also don't think that opening the car door is a realistic expectation to place on men. Seems a bit self-centered to me.
Everyday is not the same. Some days the man might be tired from working, in a legitimate hurry or reasonably distracted. He shouldn't be expected to run around opening the car door for a woman who can do that very small thing for herself.

In the Bible days, how many men ran around opening the car door for their ladies? None and for obvious reasons.

A man might start off opening the car door for the woman, but that rarely lasts in my observation because it simply isn't feasible. I live in the south, and in my observation of couples who have been together for a long time, I rarely see men opening the car door for women. If I see this, it's usually a sign of a new couple, and the man is trying to impress the woman initially.

So a lot of you girls hold doors open for strangers?

When an unknown girl opens a door for me,
I walk up to her with big crazy eyes,
and in broken English I say,
"In my country this mean we are engage.
I love for you also, you are so beautiful."

: )

It's a great line.
And I only get arrested occasionally.
haha ...lol This works for you?

Yes. If it's for instance people at work coming in behind me I walk in the door and hold my hand on it so it does not shut in their face, but if they are carrying something I stand back and hold it. Same thing in a store or elsewhere. If the person is elderly or obviously infirm, or a woman with children, I stop and hold the door open.

So that's why three or four men standing by the door refuse to hold the door open for me when I'm carrying 16,000 in my hand. It's because someone said this to them.

had a girl from my college days say the same thing to me...except she threw in a feminist twist..."do you not think I'm strong or capable enough to get my own door and I need a man to do it for me". So I politely apologized pushed the door closed and sat on the bench inside and watched while she put the box she was holding down opened the door picked the box back up and did this awkward hold the door so it doesn't close ordeal...I know what yall are going to say...I'm a horrible person...but since when does holding the door for someone suggest I'm belittling or putting them down in any way?

Yes, treat others the way you want to be treated. :)
Amen! :) If someone doesn't respond favorably to you holding the door open for them, what difference does it make? Anyone can hold the door open for a friendly person. On the other hand, if we're holding the door open as if for Jesus, we're showing him that we love him and we won't expect to be rewarded by others.

I would like to state for the record that never in all my days have I ever had a woman complain because I opened the door for her. I've never had a guy fuss because I paused and held the door open for him when he was behind me.

But maybe that's because I live in the South. Maybe it's different other places.

Have I ever mentioned how much I like living in the South?

If I find someone behind me, yes. I hold the door enough for them to take it. If someone holds the door for me then I thank them.

Same here.
I've never had them complain when l've opened their car door, or pulled out a chair for them.

The only time they seem to get upset is when l go to pre chew their food.
What's up with that?

Dude... of course they get upset. That's what food processors are for. That way, you can control the amount of saliva so that the food ends up the perfect consistency. Then you put it on crackers and call it pâté.

Being a patriarchal society, it is not part of our culture to hold the door open for women, to walk on the side of traffic while accompanying a woman, etc. But I hold the door open for any lady who is within 15-20 feet of the door. I sometimes hold it open for guys also, but that depends on how polite he "looks to be". I wouldn't hold the door open for a guy who looks like an unruly thug because he will probably shove me aside while he walks through the same door.
