So your basic position is not that God will always protect you, but that your ready to accept whatever comes..which is a understandable position ...but I don't think its a position where you should question or challenge the faith of others who might see self-protection with a firearm as a act of common sense and faith.
I didn't question or challenge anyone. I simply stated MY OPINION. In fact, I went out of my way to make it clear that this was my opinion. I said things like, "apart from the moral issues *I* have with guns," and "*I* trust God to protect me," etc.
And, fyi, I'd appreciate you not telling me what I believe. "So your basic position is not that God will always protect you..." I'm fully capable to sharing what I believe and I speak as I mean.
Part of the problem is how YOU define "protection." Being spared from suffering is NOT my definition of protection....but it seems possible that it might be yours. Personally, I believe that we need to suffer in order to be like Jesus. This is why I don't fear suffering.
When I say that God protects me, I mean that I believe that He always has my back. Any suffering I experience is simply a way for me to identify more closely with Jesus. Thus, even within my suffering he has my back because he's making me more like him.
