Out of the strong something sweet
Out of the water something to eat.

I am looking for someone who loves God and wants to Bible study one on one via Skype in the evenings Easter time... but first you must solve my riddle.

To study 1-on-1 I'm not inclined

At first glance, I would say you are speaking of Samson's riddle in Judges 14:14ff, but I can't quite get the "water" part.

Willie beat me to it.

While I'm not interested in seeing if I "qualify" for someone's Bible study (but I wish you the best in finding someone who does), I was going to say that this sounds like a twist on Samson's riddle to the Philistines.

It's supposed to be, "out of the eater came something to eat." Typo?

Judges 14:14 -- "Out of the eater, something to eat; out of the strong, something sweet."

Samson had killed a lion, and some time later, a swarm of bees had made a hive within the carcass and were producing honey. Samson ate the honey, as well as giving some to his parents, though he didn't tell them where it came from.

He also posed this as a riddle to his Philistine bride's people, saying that if they solved the riddle in 7 days, he would give them 30 sets of clothes, but if they could not answer, it would be them that owed him. The Philistines were able to answer in 3 days, but they cheated by coercing Samson's wife to get him to explain it (obviously, for as strong as he was, Samson wasn't very good at standing up to nagging women, which eventually led to his downfall.)

Because they had cheated, Samson upheld his end of the deal--by killing 30 of their men, stripping them of their clothes, and handing them over as payment for answering his riddle.

I wonder if this is some kind of warning about the pitfalls of presenting riddles!:confused::cool::D (Just kidding... sometimes they can be fun!)

Great (and goofy) minds think alike.

I was just about to ask what the prize was myself... :p

(Cookies sound awesome, but I accept cupcakes as well...) :D

Seriously though, if the OP meant something entirely different by this riddle and has a different answer, I'd really like to know what it is! :)

Well, if the word "water" really is a mistake, that decides it for me already. One of my pet peeves is people who don't really "study", but just quickly (and often mistakenly) read the Bible, or any literature, to simply say they "read" it.... and then they begin drawing conclusions from such a sketchy understanding.

hahahahahahahahahahaha
let's see.. I should make one with various answers so I can pick the cutest one and say he was right or simply skype with all of them.
Man why haven't I thought of this?

Well, maybe it was a simple misunderstanding... We'll wait to hear from the OP. :)

Willie, can you and I please make an agreement that you will NEVER quiz me on anything I read... ever... lol!!! Although I did well in school it was because I had to work at it like all get-out. Learning actually does NOT come naturally to me at all and I have to put in major effort to retain anything.

Case in point, I finally read "The Screwtape Letters" in December because I've heard people talk about how it's such a classic... and I got NOTHING out of it. I read several pages more than once and still couldn't make heads or tails of it--the language is so out of my everyday realm that I really had a hard time--and, to be completely honest, I had to Google the summary afterwards in order to actually understand what was going on. I had NO clue that the Patient had died, and when I read the summary, I was like, "WHOA!!! Where did THAT come from??!! Totally out of left field here!!"

I've actually always wondered if I qualify as having a learning disorder, but to tell you the truth, I've always been kind of afraid to know the truth! I like to think of myself as "offbeat", and not "disordered". :p Maybe the riddle in this thread was a similar kind of misunderstanding.

To the OP--welcome to CC and yes, we would love to hear the answer to your riddle. :) I hope you find a Bible study partner or group (perhaps at your local church?) and if not, you're welcome to hang out with us here for faith and fellowship.

If a friend had not questioned me, and suggested that I do some questioning of myself, on what I cherished as my well-learned and rehearsed "Sound Doctrine", I would still be saying what about a half dozen posters here keep repeating. And, I might never have met Jesus.
