If a friend had not questioned me, and suggested that I do some questioning of myself, on what I cherished as my well-learned and rehearsed "Sound Doctrine", I would still be saying what about a half dozen posters here keep repeating. And, I might never have met Jesus.
Well, my main point was only that if someone questioned me as to whether I "really" read something or not, the answer is yes, I actually did read it, but I may not have retained it as well as someone else would expect me to and they would probably (erroneously) accuse me of just skimming as well.

As to whether or not I actually buy into everything I read... "Christian" or not, is a completely different story (no, I'm not questioning the sanctity of the Bible, but I do raise my eyebrows at various interpretations and have never digested "tried and true" Christian cliches without a bit of spiritual indigestion.) To be honest, I didn't get much out of The Screwtape Letters, nor did I enjoy it (braces self for a good old-fashioned stoning) but I understand that we are all affected differently by different works.

At any rate... Willie, I'm sure your story is quite fascinating. :) And it reassures me that sometimes when we hear something that "doesn't seem quite right"... It just might not be!!

No matter how much of an "expert" in the Word the person may claim to be (*cough* 98.9% of threads in the Bible Forum! *cough*)

Interestingly enough, many of my friends (and several of them are theologians and authors) say a lot that I disagree with. I like to talk with, and listen to, and rread books by people with whom I sometimes disagree. I even read John MacArthur and his crowd for that very reason. I hope I never get to the point that I think I am completely right. I just want to sense that I am on the right path.

Let's face it, if you believe what everyone else believes.... where does that place you? Yep, squarely on "The Broad Path." Jesus, Himself, was constantly accused of being an offence to the accepted "Sound Doctrine." And, in many cases, all we have done is "evolve" today's Christianity into something Jesus would oppose with everything in Him if He were to walk among us again today.

Judges 14:14 -- "Out of the eater, something to eat; out of the strong, something sweet."

Samson had killed a lion, and some time later, a swarm of bees had made a hive within the carcass and were producing honey. Samson ate the honey, as well as giving some to his parents, though he didn't tell them where it came from.

He also posed this as a riddle to his Philistine bride's people, saying that if they solved the riddle in 7 days, he would give them 30 sets of clothes, but if they could not answer, it would be them that owed him. The Philistines were able to answer in 3 days, but they cheated by coercing Samson's wife to get him to explain it (obviously, for as strong as he was, Samson wasn't very good at standing up to nagging women, which eventually led to his downfall.)

Because they had cheated, Samson upheld his end of the deal--by killing 30 of their men, stripping them of their clothes, and handing them over as payment for answering his riddle.

I wonder if this is some kind of warning about the pitfalls of presenting riddles!:confused::cool::D (Just kidding... sometimes they can be fun!)
I already knew about the lion and the riddle and his rockstar hair, but why did he strip them of their clothes??

The whole story is in Judges 14. Give it a read when you can. :)

The Philistines cheated when answering the riddle, so in order to pay them what had been bet (30 sets of clothes), Samson killed 30 Philistine men, took their clothes (i.e., he stripped the dead bodies of their clothing), and paid up.

Oh they were already dead. Okay. :) I'd rather wait for the movie..

Am I opening up a can of threads by asking
what's wrong with MacArthur?
Not being combative, ... I just don't know.
Doctrine, secondary, or personal issues?
Just curious, but I don't mean to be out of line.

Hey I decide if someone is good looking. If you don't look like Dracula you've passed the test.

I'm sorry. I shouldn't have intruded.
Besides, I thought most women were attracted to Dracula,
and the whole twilight/vampire/bad boy craze.

Anyway, Drac would be a major step up from me,
I couldn't win a contest like that even if
I was competing against my own reflection
in the mirror. I'm sorry to intrude.

Eeww no, not my taste. I'll skip that part since most men think they're not good looking.
Too late. Now you can't get rid of me anymore.

Assuming "sweat" means "sweet" then of course that is from Samson's riddle. I don't know many who don't know that riddle. The mention of water threw me in the starting post.

Erroneous words sent......... TWICE. "Water" and then even in the very post blaming his phone.. "sweat."

This is what I meant when I said many people really don't want to be "too" serious about studying.

To the OP, You may want to familiarize yourself with our site rules since technically the purpose of this thread violates those rules.

Your intent may be innocent enough but unfortunately over the years we have had entirely too many problems with persons joining this site with the sole purpose of drawing from our vast user base to develop their own groups. Likewise we have found that many persons doing this (not to impugn your character) have had less than honorable intent.

Rules - Christian Chat Rooms & Forums

13. No unauthorized advertising or soliciting or recruiting.
Please come to our chat rooms and forums for fellowship, not to try to advertise anything (not even in private messages to our chat room visitors) or recruit people for anything. By "anything" we mean anything -- web sites, chat rooms, forums, facebook groups, churches, groups, doctrine, etc.
Also, please understand that many users have joined our chat rooms to try to solicit donations for their own charity (or some other Christian charity). There are so many charities people claim (e.g., orphanages in India, food for Africa, etc.) and we have no way to verify these things. And besides, people don't join our chat rooms to be solicited, so please refrain.
Regarding other sites, understand that we've had too many cases of new and existing chat sites -- even Christian sites -- trying to piggyback on our site. If you are trying to build up your own online fellowship (chat site or forum or facebook group or skype group whatever), leeching off of another online fellowship (by trying to recruit its users) is not the way to do it. Whether the recruiting is done directly or indirectly, the result is the same, and we reserve the right to enforce our rule.
Example of directly using CC to recruit members.
1. While on CC using any method of communication on CC to inform them of your site or online fellowship/teaching/ministry group or venue.
Example of indirectly using CC to recruit members.
1. Adding someone you met on CC to a social networking friends list, adding them as an instant messenger contact, or communicating to them through email, and then informing them of your site or online fellowship/teaching/ministry group or venue.
