I had to catch up on laundry today because I was "running out of clothes." Odd thing is I have a closet full of clothes, and one and a half chest of drawers full of clothes. (The other half of the drawers is full of sheets and a few clothes that stay for sentimental reasons only.) But, I can't wear most of those clothes now because it's winter and those are my warmer weather clothes. Both kinds. My summer clothes and my spring/autumn clothes. And then there are the special-occasion clothes -- dresses, nice slacks, button-up shirts, jackets, vests, and things I just loved, but can't wear anymore.

When I worked, I needed more clothes. I represented the company, so I had to wear "office clothes." No less than enough blouses to last 8-10 days, and 3-4 mix-and-match trousers/pants/slacks. (Not even when I was young did I like dresses or skirts. lol) You just can't get caught wearing the same blouse twice in the same week, right?

Now I have three pairs of trousers, four sweatshirts for very cold days, three long sleeve T-shirts, and one button-up blouse. I don't usually need to have more than that because I usually don't leave the house but for 1-3 hours on any given day. (I will not wash a shirt if I only wore it for a couple of hours unless I sweated or got goop on it somehow.)

So, all this to ask, what is "enough clothes" for you? Do you think it has to do with culture, what we do for a living, or something about expressing ourselves by our clothing choices?

Enough clothes means that I don't have to do laundry more than once every two weeks.

I'll have to ask my wife as she is the one who has supplied most of my wardrobe. When we first got married I noticed that most of the articles of clothing I owned before being married were starting to disappear. Personally, I believe that a hole or two or the occasional permanent grease stain gave the clothing character. I know better now. I've been learned few things.

It used to mean something close to that for me too, and for the same reason. lol

I still have to negotiate throwing out his "favorite" clothes. I think we hit our "I can live with this" at three holes. His occupation therapist wanted him to get an "old T-shirt" to relearn how to put on a shirt. He told me "the black one," and I instantly new which one he meant, because it was his top favorite with about 5 holes. We were both surprised when I couldn't find it. I think I finally convinced him to toss it last year. It was only 20 years old. I settled for his second favorite. It only has four holes in it, but I like it because it really shows off his blue eyes. lol

Few denims, had 3, got 5 extra from someone, not necessary but thanks! I have now 5 vests, couple of t-shirts, 2 trousers cause it's cold at the office. One dress I bought when my collegue married. Used to have tons of clothes, dresses, skirts, wide church pants, blouses blablabla. Don't have to please anybody now and in Holland you can just go to the office in denim.

Yes, but nice denims, right? Not like they're your grung-around-the-house denims?

Yes they're nice. I saw one English guy who lives here make fun of it. Almost everyone wears denim.

I probably have more than I need, but that being said, I usually end up with new clothes because my mother says "You can't wear that, it's so old it's faded! / it's got holes in it" and I go get something new. I think one of my shirts is more than ten years old :p

Definition of enough clothes? My parts are covered and I'm sufficiently warm. ;)

I know, that isn't what you meant. I'm jes' bein' silly.

Seriously, I have a closet full of my clothes which formerly held all the hanging clothes of my wife and I, before we split. It crossed my mind that if I were to marry again, I might need to enlarge the closet, or reduce the clothing.....

Naaaah! :)

Does that mean you wear your boxer shorts for a week at a time then, or do you have more than 2 pairs of boxers? lol

I like clothes and I like buying clothes, I certainly have more than enough (and then some), but that wouldn't stop me buying an article of clothing if I liked it!

I have a particular liking for denim (jeans, shirts and jackets, but mostly jeans), leather jackets, shirts and jumpers, I have just recently moved from my house into an apartment and it was only when I had to move my clothes that I realised how many I had! lol

I am not married (and not dating at this particular moment in time), so don't have any voice in my ear telling me not to buy such and such...

All my pants are ten years old because I need to wear overalls. (Pain around waist says not to wear any clothes that stay on at the waistline.) I kept gaining weight after I became disabled, but always keep my "skinny clothes" just in case I lose weight. Good thing. It's hard to find overalls now. They're not trendy. lol (And, I donated a bag of clothes to Goodwill and threw out the clothes too lousy for Goodwill in another bag last summer when I got to cleaning out clothes.) Most of my dress shirts are 20-30 years old, simply because I bought quality back when we could afford it. I think only my underwear and socks are newer than 5 years old. lol

I'm so bad at buying new clothes, I almost gave my younger sister a gown I wore only to our Dad's wedding. And then I remembered. Dad was marrying her mom, so she wasn't even born when I last wore that gown. She's 33 years old. lol

A closet should only be cleaned out once every 20 years. Is your closet safe then? lol

I used to be a group home parent for 6 teen boys. The rule was right side/front first day, right side/back the next day, inside-out/front the next day, inside-out/back the next day, and commando on the fifth day. At least, that's how the guys explained it to me. Sound right?

The problem I have with leather clothes is I have to get around to taking them to the cleaners eventually, and it cost a lot. (I'm cheap. lol)

Wow! You sound way organized. I can't even tell you how many shoes I have. I don't get rid of them until I can't find one, and I never look, because I have docksiders and sandals. That's all I ever wear. I just trip on one of the others occasionally. lol

"Organized" barely scratches the surface. Time in the military plus prison time - both of which are very similar because of their schedules and rules for how things are done, means I got it beat into my head to keep my things neat, and have only what I need. I also keep myself to a rule that if I want a "new" shirt, I have to get rid of an "old" shirt, so I buy the new one and donate the old one to Goodwill.

I'm really a stick in the mud.
