Drunkenness is what the Bible condemns, not drinking "in moderation"
I'm sorry, Sister Tinuviel, but I disagree.
The big question is not whether or not you can, but whether or not you should. And that's what the Holy Scripture says:
- "All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not." (1Corinthians 10.23).
- "All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any" (1Corinthians 6.12).
We should never think that we are totally immune to sin.
Look at the warnings of the apostle Paul:
- "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it." (1Corinthians 10.13).
We should never think that we are totally immune to sin. Look at the warnings of the apostle Paul:
- " Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law." (Galatians 5.23).
- " Neither give place to the devil." (Ephesians 4.27).
- " Abstain from all appearance of evil." (1Thessalonians 5.22).
See how it is to escape even from all the appearance of evil (and not only evil). After all, the tricks of Ha-Satan are very subtle, and if you fall into any of them, it will be a terrible loss to the kingdom of the heavens. After all, there is a very great potential in your life to be used for the kingdom of the Eternal.
Not to mention that a weak brother in the faith, who has just been freed from drink addiction, may have his conscience struck and come to wreck in faith because he has seen you drinking. After all, an unexpected visitor may knock on your door:
- “Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another. For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence.” (Romans 14.19,20).
- “For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols; and through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died? But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ. Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend..” (1Corinthians 8.10-13).
- “If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake. But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof: conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience? For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks? Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God: even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.” (1Corinthians 10.27-33).
Obs: What is in square brackets I added to make it clear how this section applies to the case of alcoholic beverage.
Blessings on Christ.
