Hey Everyone,

I always get a kick out of the avalanche of "problems" the beauty industry convinces women they need to "fix", because if they don't, they will apparently become immediate social outcasts.

One current beauty "911" is the supposed issue of enlarged pores on the face (the same "problems" are always around, but the industry just markets them in cycles.) This is especially common in those who have acne, so as someone who's battled more than her share of breakouts in the past, I can relate.

Now, I know I probably just lost all our male readers right there, seeing as they're all probably asking themselves, "What the hee haw is a pore and why would I care what size it is??!!"

Which is exactly the point of this thread.

The beauty industry is currently pushing all sorts of cleansers, creams, serums, lotions, and primers (again, I realize I'm losing any gentlemen we have left here, but hang on just a little while longer) in order to "SHRINK THOSE PORES, LADIES!! YOUR WHOLE SOCIAL LIFE DEPENDS ON IT!!!" The clear, underlying message is, "You will never get a date, be accepted into social circles, or be able to appear in public unless you buy our products and get rid of those hideous pores!!"

And I'm left wondering... Do men even NOTICE a woman's pores, and does it really matter to them???

Seriously.

Here's a demonstration of how much TAKING CARE OF THOSE PORES can CHANGE YOUR LIFE because you will immediately LOOK SO MUCH BETTER:

(You don't have to watch the entire video--the cover pictures might be enough, or just click at about 1:45 for a "before" and at about 4:35 for the "after", which, yes, also includes makeup.)

This woman is obviously beautiful (with or without makeup.)

But what do you think of the difference? IS there any difference? Can any of you even tell?

I'll be curious to hear your answers. Ladies, do you do anything to "fix" your pores, and doe sit make a difference?

The entire point of this thread is ask whether or not the "beauty emergencies" we are so often told to "fix"--usually through hundreds/thousands of dollars' worth of products or treatments--are even noticed by men at all.

Don't listen to that nonsense. They want your money and most men prefer the natural look. Throw all that stuff away, buy soap for 2 euro and do as the Dutch. It's cheap and no effort whatsoever.

The overwhelming majority of things that women abuse themselves over are directly related to what other women might notice about them, and have no correlation whatsoever to anything that a man might notice.

If a man's a fisherman, and a woman is holding up a fish...he'd notice.
If a man is into cars, and a woman is working on her car...he'd notice.
The only way a man would notice large pores is if he's a dermatologist.

Paraphrased from Greg Hahn, "I don't care about a girl's opening line, whatever she wants to do, the answer's YES!"

(I'll see if I can attach an audio clip....)

I always try to write my threads in a way that will hopefully coax the reader to read through the first post before posting.

It doesn't always work, but I try! :)

I definitely notice how much the commercials try to manipulate people, to create insecurities or fears that they can sell something to.

Pores, not so much

Similarly there is often a message inserted with things marketed to guys -- buy this to get the girl. For example, the gillette fusion commercial with kate upton and some other girls talking about how they want guys to groom their body hair. (who cares)

Men don't but some other women do (I do, mostly because I pay attention to that sort of thing in myself). Or maybe some men do too, and they just can't put their finger on it. Like hairstyles. They have no idea what you did to it, but they like it/don't like it.

It does make a difference, because if your pores are too large they can collect dirt more easily and lead to breakouts. By the same token, if your pores are too small and you have overactive oil glands, they can't always handle the oil output, become clogged, and also lead to breakouts.

It also has an effect on the smoothness of your skin, due to how it effects the reflection of light on your face.

I've noticed that, when I take my time to actually get my pores clean (i.e., a hardcore peel mask or something), the pores shrink on their own because they no longer have dirt in them. Basically, give your face a good deep cleaning every once in a while.

Personally I notice a person's eyes. Women included.

Can you even see how big a pore is? I thought they were microscopic or something.

While I agree that there is definitely genuine validity in taking care of yourself, I find the answers here to be fascinating. How many other things are we all insecure about... that no one else but us really cares about?

Are you stressing over something like this or spending a lot of money to "fix" it?

Most people probably don't even notice a difference (or that there was anything "wrong" to begin with.)

(And yes. I admit. I actually own a "pore shrinkage" cream. But after reading this thread, I don't think I'm going to replace it.)

I dont think there is any "underlying" message. I think some women just want their skin to be a healthy as possible and those women would be the market for this kind of thing. Men have nothing to do with it. Not all women do things for the sake of men.

I can definitely say that the older I get, the less I care about what people think (women or men.)

But every now and then, little (or childhood) insecurities slip through.

Quote from an Arlo & Janis cartoon, where Janis is thinking about getting some cosmetic surgery to remove a few wrinkles:
"But honey why would you want to get that done to yourself?"
"It's just a little cosmetic surgery. I wear makeup to make myself look better. What's the difference between that and a little wrinkle removal?"
"I've been telling you for 40 years you don't need all that makeup!"

Of course women never BELIEVE us guys when we say they don't have to use makeup, get cosmetic surgery, all that stuff. We try, we try, we try and try and try to get it through to them that we love them for who they are, but they keep thinking we love them for how they look.

One more cartoon quote:
"Son, I'm going to give you some advice that won't make much sense now, but when you grow up and get married it will save you a lot of grief. When you get married your wife will periodically go to a place called a hair salon. When she comes back she will look EXACTLY THE SAME to you. Only she and other women will even be able to tell any difference. But you must never let on that you can't see a difference. Always compliment her on how her hair looks when she comes back from a hair salon."
