And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?

You say the #1 reason people don't speak in tongues is because 'they are unlearned in that area'?

Were the disciples 'taught' it at Pentecost when they were speaking in tongues?

Scripture seem to indicate that we each have different gifts. Do all prophecy? NO. Are all teachers? NO. Are all Apostles? NO.

This is the reason. God gives gifts as He sees fit.

That is not at all what is quite clear he meant in his post. Boy, you could give Chubby Checkers a run for his money in twisting.

I too have had the same experience. I have probably spoken in about 15 different languages as far as I could tell. But there does seem to be a dominate one for sure. It's interesting actually as you know that there are times of very earnest prayer which almost seems like pleading and other times it's very joyful. There seems to be seasons for it as well. The Spirit will lead us if we are open to how He wants us to pray for each situation.

But just like Joidevivre said..just let it flow.

There is a devotional tongues and a public use which is as the Spirit wills and is outlined in 1 Cor 14 but you can go to the link below to read what everyone had to say about it..the unlearned part is discussed there..this OP has a different purpose....please do not derail it...

Please honor the OP's request in asking people about their experiences and not derail this thread...there is a tongues thread that people can talk about whatever else they want to discuss.

Maybe you should take your own advice and stop derailing other people's threads.
 
For me tongues is private, it helps when I am looking for direction and don't know what to pray for myself so I trust the Holy Spirit to pray for me.

Rarely, actually. Mostly to the church.

It's a shame so many haven't experienced it & don't want it.

It's also a shame tongues haven't been taught correctly/completely, for the modern church uses the gift incorrectly. For example:
1 Corinthians 14:13-17 (KJV)
[SUP]13 [/SUP]Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. [SUP]14 [/SUP]For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. [SUP]15 [/SUP]What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. [SUP]17 [/SUP]For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.

You see, we should pray to interpret. Some eventually pray with the understanding to where they prophesy.

I find the same things in my life as well. The more I pray in tongues - the clearer direction comes to me. I'm trying to learn to wait on the Lord to get His direction and praying this way helps me immensely.

I was simply answering an honest question from John146 and I ended it with the below statement in my post..and that's the last I'm talking to you about this..I'm simply asking you to please honor the OP's request..thank you.

I began with a few words, I was rather young and unsure of what I was feeling. Over time the Spirit will flow and you will speak more often. For me it is a more private prayer thing but I have prayed for others and spoken.

Simply ignore those who are trying to upset the thread. People here jump in on a subject whether they are off in left field or not.Dont let them discourage you. Pay them no mind. People feel the need to troll threads and derail them to the subject they want to talk about. Ignore them and don't be discouraged.

yes it is a " Contentious subject". however, there is to much focus on the gifts of The Holy Spirit instead of the relationship we are to have with our Lord Jesus. As Paul said " I thank my God speak more in tongues than ye all". 1 cor 14:18 speaking in tongues is only one of the gifts and there is a blessing for the one who is speaking as it says in 1 cor 14:2 "For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries."

1 cor 14:4 " He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church."

If the Lord is directing you? and you are obeying HIM? then do unto the Lord as HE leads you :)

Yes I can't pray anyway with nice sentences. I either pray the Bible and I mostly pray for souls, get some names and He does the rest. We don't know what to pray but the Spirit helps us with utterances.
