I'm not sure if this was posted or discussed on here before, but i'd like hear your thoughts on this.

I have a friend. she is mid 20's no believer in Jesus. her family is religious and has a strong biblical worldview. she is frustrated because her family is of the opinion that women and men are not fully and completely equal. the family believes that God create men to lead and be the head of the things like the church, the family, and society in general i guess. MY fiend expressed to me her frustration because she believes the family is "stuck in the past" and holding on to "archaic gender roles".

I'm curious to know how young women feel about this. do you believe that men should lead and women should submit in today's world? what is equality and how do we measure the value of male vs female?

A man should esteem a woman higher than himself and a woman should esteem a man higher than herself. that is scriptural

Yes, but that doesn't mean a woman is less.

Men and women are equal in value, but they have different God-given roles.

Having different roles by no means makes someone less. Im 100% certain God would judge both of them by what they have done, and not by their bodies : p But no, women are in no way worth less than men.

Everyone is of great value to Jesus, so much so that he died for each one of us.
If you wonder if you are valued, then wonder why Jesus died for you.

Matthew 10:29-31 NKJV
[29] Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the
ground apart from your Father's will. [30] But the very hairs of your head are
all numbered. [31] Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

Jesus went out of his way to raise up those cast down, including women.

See John 4 woman of Samaria (she was the worst of the worst of women, many husbands,
from Sameria, and doing the traditional work of a man which also happened to be thought of
as being an incomely type of work)

Luke 8 v 43 woman who was bleeding ( this would her made her untouchable)

Luke 7 v 38 woman who washed Jesus feet (a former prostitute)

John 19 v 26 Jesus did not leave his own mother alone.

There are many many more examples.

Loads of cultures and religions have sought to treat women as second class citizens across the
world. This has resulted in many atrocities. Children aborted because they are female, children
etc. Even in biblical times women were treated as less value then men, but Jesus bucked the trend,
not just for women but for many who were considered of little value, ie lepers, the sick, even a
tax collecter. Lol

Jesus is a champion of those society casts out or has little regard for.

There is another aspect also. Families who exercise "man is head of the woman"
often forget the second part about "man loving the woman as Christ loved the church"

In my opinion if the second part was exercised as religiously as the first part, there
would be no problems. Just think about it Jesus loved the church sacrificially!

If a family does not know how to "do" the second part of that, then they
should not be trying to do the first part. Otherwise instead of family life
being based on biblical principles, it ends up causing immeasurable harm.

Many use the first part to excuse poor behaviour, bullying, domineering,
getting one up on their partner, causing poor self image, issues of poor self
worth etc. Feelings of frustration because the women in the family are
denied opportunities to use their gifts and talents etc.

How do young women today feel about this?
are they rejecting Christianity because of it?

Being a leader means you are a servant and have more responsibility.

Biblical authority is different than worldly authority.

As someone stated previously.., the man only gets to be the head of the house, if he loves his wife as Christ loves the church...only if he is willing to die for her and looks to Christ as his leader.

Otherwise the household is already in trouble.

And no.,women are not worth less than men.

Yes, it's certainly no small-fry responsibility that God tasks men with as husbands and dads.

Maybe this family is choosing what verses they want to live by and discarding others?
it is very interesting that so many Christians fail to include v 21

Instructions for Christian Households
21
Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

22Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26to make her holy, cleansing[SUP]b[/SUP] her by the washing with water through the word, 27and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— 30for we are members of his body. 31“For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”[SUP]c[/SUP] 32This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Sexism does exist in the Christian community, youll sometimes hear things like people bashing women because Eve was deceived into eating from the tree. I never understand why they do this, though. If you read the story, Adam ended up doing it to, and they both were cast out. Neither of them were innocent. Both men and women are fallen, and Christ gave His life for any of us who came to Him. If neither man or woman come to Him, they will both be cast away from Him.
No favoritism there.

And Im sure there are women who have turned from Christ because of this, due to the secular world working hard to make Christ seem evil, by pointing out one part of the commandment for men and women "women submit to your husbands" and leaving out the rest of it "men love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her" These people always go out of their way to make it seem as if God wants women to be slaves of men. Of course thats not what the bible says. But they hate Him so much that they will try to make Him look evil. Its the fallen world we live in. If someone talks to you about it, you should be sure to tell them what the Word of God actually says : p

Two things to think about:

A lot of people get the words "submit" and "obey" confused. Therefore, those on both sides of the wifely submission issue will say that a wife is to "obey" her husband. But that's not what Paul meant. The only place (in terms of family responsibilities) where he used the word "obey" was in reference to parents and children.

Also, I suspect a lot of men saw their "rule" over their wives not as a "right", but rather as a "duty". They may not have felt as if they, as men, were necessarily superior to women, but instead believed that God had tasked them with the responsibility of "ruling over" their wives. Now, some men did abuse that role, but by and large, men in general saw it as something they HAD to do, not something they WANTED to do.

And if people actually read their Bibles properly, they wouldn't make that mistake - hopefully. Because while Eve was deceived, Adam willfully rebelled against God. Adam's sin was purposeful.

..Are Women worth less than men?...
The answer to this is FULLY revealed in the The Cross (and His descent into Hades)! John 3v16, Acts 2v27, Rom 10v7, Eph 3v19

And finally: "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus." Gal 3v28
