Macular Degeneration is no fun at all. There are two types, Wet and Age Related. Although I have plenty of years to call mine the latter, mine is Wet. Either form causes blindness eventually.
MD is a condition where spots form on the macula and begin to grow. Eventually they will begin to obstruct the vision. I have read that cataracts are operable, glaucoma is treatable, and MD is inevitable.
I have had this condition twenty-two years. When it first began I had no idea what was going one. I lost most of teh vision in one eye, legally blinded, over night. The other eye began at the same time but it did not advance rapidly, though it has steadily since that time
Oft times others will think one with MD is not really blind, and this is true to some extent. Although most people who are legally blind, even with the walking stick, can see some, but never quite as others do.
With MD, such as is my case at present, people go through a phase of seeing in stages of their line of sight, that is there are missing areas. I asked my doctor why it is I can see a car coming down the street, but I do not see the bus that is infront of it. This is when he explained to me how it works. Double vition is common, not to mention the hallucinations caused by this condition. I had two streetlights in the distance out of my window for three eyars until I realized I was seeing double. I have learned that in my instance the image on th eright is the true object in view. At any rate everything is obscured.
We see shapes but no detail. I now know most people bytheir hair and body shape, or by where I see them by association. This too lends to others thinking the blindness is faked. Do not throw a ball to me, because it is ony seen in phases of its trajectory, and even then not well. I am blessed to know how to touch type so I do not need to see what I am typing to type, though I do overlook many typos,an I probably could have corrected them, but the process ofenlarging and diminishing the page becomes arduous at times. Usually the typos are so obvious they can be read with understanding..that is my rationalization anyway.
As it worsened for me, I became resigned to the fact that I could use my PC anymore. Well after my pity party I got down to brass tacks. I bought magnifying glasses, winding up with three of them. Now I can read online most things with them. Another great tool online is using the control + or - depending on whether you are enlarging or diminishing text. I use this a lot in CC. Most times I use the magnifying glass combined with the control + or - options. Once ou become accustomed to this, it becomes automatic.
MD is no fun at all. I have to remember how people looked when I met them or take a photo and look on my screen, or the one I do not do very often, and that is putting my nose ins someone's face...of course this is very rare, very indeed.
God bless you, and I love you, with or without MD, you are special, amen.
