ecause it is the same mistake all anihilists make. Death refers to the body, not the soul.
The soul is the media for conversing with God. When their soul died (no relationship with God )it limited the time of their spirit. It’s what corruption does as God planned it, when He did corrupt it.. It began aging leading toward the dust it was formed from.
The soul goes to hell or Paradise. What do you think Jesus was referring to in Luke 16, a spiritual destination or physical destination?
That would be the soul as the spirit essence of life.
Because we as a new creation are given a new spirit that will never die our soul can go to paradise, as the bosom of Abraham , the invisible presence of God.
Our bodies never go beyond the grave. The first resurrection is only for believers who will live forever with Jesus the second Resurrection is only for unbelievers.
The resurrection is a twofold work of God. On the last day those who will not experience the second death seeing they will not come in condemnation, is the same day as judgment for the unbeliever.
John 12:48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath
one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken,
the same shall judge him in the last day.
John 11:24 Martha saith unto him, I know that
he shall rise again
in the resurrection at the
last day.
The last day also marks the seventh and final trump, the wake-up call to those dead asleep as the same call to those still here reigning with Christ..Both rise in the twinkling of the eye.
1Corinthians 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
Hell and separation from God is a spiritual thing not a physical thing.
It was a physical thing for Jonas and how we understand the phrase "heart of the earth". .God does not punish a person because he did not have favor on them or otherwise we could not call it mercy, that provides grace.
Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God
out of the fish's belly,And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me;
out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. Jon 2:1
You could say as Christ cried experiencing hell (tribulation) .
Note... unto death not died the Spirit of God (Chrsit) could die. It was a living sacrifice.
Mar 14:34 And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch.
Mar 14:35 And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.
Mar 14:36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.
As the father deliverer the Son the same applies to the Holy Spirit that delivered Jonas from hell (more tribulation.)
The dead exist in a non-corporeal state, but they still exist, as Jesus taught. When Jesus said fear Him who can kill the body and soul he meant in Jewish terms the physical body in the existence of corporeal life.
He meant the whole.. body, soul and spirit. Because they are dead will never rise to new spirit life.
Dust that goes up in smoke has no spirit life of its own. Dead means dead not suspended animation.
