Teacher hat on: Spiders are not insects, they are arachnids. Insects have six legs and three body parts: abdomen, thorax, head. Spiders have eight legs and two body parts. Spiders are more closely related to scorpions, lobsters, and shrimp than insects.

Teacher hat off: I have a fondness for spiders and spider webs. :)

None.

Anything having more than 4 legs and a nasty disposition is eliminated on sight. This is especially true for all members of the taxonomic class of Arachnida. They are dispatched with extreme prejudice.

Except crab. Crab are food. They are the only exception to my "arachnida rule". Oh, and lobster, whose closest genetic relative is the cockroach. 'Em are good eats too. Okay, two exceptions to my "death to bugs" rules. Grr. Fear me.

Teacher hat on: crabs are not arachnids, nor lobsters. They are in the class crustacea. Lobsters are more closely related to shrimp than cockroaches, although they are all in the phylum arthropoda.

You meant subphylum of crustacea. I understand the confusion though. When we were in school, taxonomic nomenclature was much simpler an affair.

Point being, crabs are the spiders of the sea, and lobsters are bugs. Even so, they are mighty fine dipped in garlic butter after being properly cooked.

Now take off your teacher hat before you get hat head.

You can keep your lobsters AND crabs. Thank God I'm not teaching science next year and am teaching art, art history, and mythology which I should not mess up as I have done with science, apparently.

Science is difficult to keep up with. It changes so often. A few of the text books I had as an undergrad are now worthless because the science progressed far enough to disprove many of the tenets I was taught.

I feel bad for Physics PhDs. They might spend their entire career pursuing a theory and publishing dozens of articles, and then have it proven the theory was completely wrong. An entire career, all for nothing. That would be depressing.

Water beetles... four inches long, eat fish and frogs.
Asian giant wasps... six inches long, eat anything they want. I wonder if this is what the Lord sent ahead of the Israelites.
Crickets... tell the temperature with their legs.
Katydids... not common and not commonly known, but beautiful.

I suppose the attraction to physics is the ever changing nature of the field, and the kind of fantasy of astrophysicism.
