I Am the True Vine
Joh 15:1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
Joh 15:2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
Joh 15:3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
Joh 15:4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
Joh 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
Joh 15:6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
Joh 15:7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
Joh 15:8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

What kind of fruit do you produce now that you are born again, that you couldn't do before?

Jesus said we can do "nothing" without Him, what do you think He means, when He says, nothing?

The Greek describes the word, nothing as, "not even ONE thing".

Anybody know what Jesus is talking about? It would have to be something you couldn't do before you received Jesus in your life, that brings glory to God.

Is it love or forgiveness, the ability to escape sin's hold, go to heaven, or is it something bigger?

It's so poignant isn't it? I love Christ words here. So prophetic. It's like God was talking through Him. I think he really was.

Literally nothing. For it is God that creates everything anyway. Without God there is nothing. Not a thing. So if it wasn't for God. You could not even be. Let alone anything you do.

And Without love, there can be no forgiveness. It is because God loves you so much. That it is through your faith alone you are forgiven. There's nothing bigger than God's love for you. ;)

We can give nothing to God unless He gives it to us first. In reality everything we do is because it is "God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure" (Philippians 2:13).

And the really neat thing is that even though it is God which puts the 'want to' into us and then gives us the 'ability' to do what He put in our mind to do . . . one day at the Judgment Seat of Christ He is going to reward us as though it were entirely our idea from the beginning.

Yea, folks can lose rewards for failing to go through with what God lays on our hearts, but bless God we are still saved, 'yet so as by fire' (I Corinthians 3:15).

Hey! know1... PTL!
Gal 5: 22, 23 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law."
2 Pet 1: 4-11 "Whereby are given unto us exceedingly great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And beside this giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that you shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall. For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."
The fruit of the Spirit is grown from abiding in Jesus. The Holy Spirit makes our devotions in the scripture to be Jesus to us; and by fellowship, we learn of him, Spirit to spirit. The Spirit also writes the Lord's laws into our hearts and minds, which produces spiritual growth in the quality or intensity of our love, joy, peace, faith, and perseverance.
In fact, we shall know them by the fruit in their lives; and not by how accurate their doctrines might be.
Maranatha!

Our Father tells us all is His and there is nothing we can give Him except the sacrifice of thanksgiving. I understand this and it is humbling to realize that we are what we are. Praise God always, amen.

It is nice to see a child of God who is not set in their ways or beliefs. Many are not open or willing to seek God for the truth.
I look forward to seeing what God reveals to you.

It's like God was talking through Him.
That would be one thing we couldn't do without God or before we were in Christ.
We wouldn't be able to receive revelation knowledge, prophesy, or be lead into all truth by the anointing, right?

Oh my, I have so much to learn. Thanks for your kind words and encouragement. I like these answers, you got some real good ones. I mean really good ones, huh? I know that everything is His, that the unsaved and saved have all of everything because of Him. But what can we do saved, that we can't do without Him? I think we can overcome our strongholds, and want to, we think more about others as we grow in Him. We are able to forgive more, especially when in Him. I think the sanctification and growth we experience in Him is something we can also thank Him for. Our faith is His, from Glory to Glory, He works within giving us the spirit of love and a sound mind. But still, I think this question deserves even more time. I sincerely think it is a good one. Do you have any thoughts on this? Hugs and God Bless..:)

I also think there is more real love, enduring peace, kindness, patience, joy, gentleness, and self control, those are the fruits of the spirit. But do we have some of those, maybe less frequent or less sustaining but are we capable of having those fruits unsaved?

True, but God is gracious enough to do the same for those who are not in Christ. So that wouldn't apply.
Don't you have some example or testimony of what God did for or through you, that you could not have done or would not have come about without Him? Something that would glorify God?
No one gave any personal testimony of what God did through or for them.
Can we, who are in Christ, now receive answered prayer? Could we have received anything from God before we received Christ in our hearts?
But Jesus asked if "WE" can do anything, accept we abide in Him, and I stress the word, "anything".
Wouldn't that fall under the same scripture that says, "I can do all things through Christ, which strengthens, enables, and empowers me."
I think a more accurate translation for the word "through", would be "in" Christ, as some versions put it.
So what does God strengthen, enable, and empower us to be able to do, that we couldn't do before we were in Christ Jesus?

Agreed, but I still think there's more to that statement Jesus made than what's done within us.
He said, "Ye can DO nothing...", as in, we doing something in Jesus' name, or God doing through us, such as being a doer of the word that we hear, the word of God, or the word of faith, and then God providing the power to cause it to manifest or to be done.
I've pondered this for a couple of months now, and it just comes across as something bigger, something more.

If you look at the beginning of John 15, you see that the subject of what we can and cannot do revolves around either being IN Christ Jesus, the vine, or not.
In the vine, we produce fruit. Apart from the vine, no fruit.
For example, a prophet cannot prophesy without the Spirit of God within the person, right?
So when it comes to spiritual gifts, such as those mentioned in 1Cor 12, we can do nothing, because it is the spirit within the person that gives them the ability to prophesy, in this case.
In that sense, we can do nothing without Christ, for all special abilities come from and through Jesus, the vine.

I agree, truly, I do.
This may sound far fetched to you, but some years back, God was telling and showing me things about, how we are made, spirits, and how the spirit world works, and one of the things He showed me was that any special ability a person demonstrates, is a spirit that was put within them, giving them the ability to do what that spirit specializes in.
Every good and perfect gift comes from God, and everything that is not good, comes from the devil.
For example, as mentioned in post 18, a prophet of God can prophesy ONLY BECAUSE OF the Spirit of and from God that is within the man/woman of God, giving them the ability to prophesy at their will, for the spirit of the prophets are subject to the prophets. 1Co_14:32

And on the negative side, remember the young lady following Paul around?

Act 16:16 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:
Act 16:17 The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.
Act 16:18 And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.
Act 16:19 And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers,

What happened when the spirit was cast out of the girl? She was no longer able to divine for anyone anymore, because it was the spirit of divination that gave her the ability.

How do you think the people's languages got changes at Babel?
Or how one understand another language they were never taught?
How does a person who couldn't speak and had great difficulty learning simple things, suddenly start to play beautiful music on the piano, when they never played before, as though they had been playing all their life?
The list goes on and on.

Eze 36:27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

Num 11:25 And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease.

The word "of", literally means, a part of the spirit.

So if what I said is true, about all gifts from God being spirits with varying abilities, then in that sense, we could do absolutely nothing apart from Christ, the source of that ability. Wouldn't that be true?
That is what I believe John 15 is talking about, when Jesus said we can do not one thing apart from Him.
What do you think?

Hello friend.
I think you hit the nail on the head.
I believe John 15 is talking about being a partaker of God's divine nature, through the promises, by remaining in Christ, and without abiding in Him, we cannot do anything, which would include being a partaker of His divine nature.
The word of God says in 1Jn 4:17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he [that is in us] is, so are we in this world.
