Over and over it is clear, He expects those who are His to treat each other with love, patience, and mercy, definitely NOT with dislike, disgust, annoyance, hatred or indifference.

He even calls Himself our Brother.

For both He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all from one Father; for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren,
Hebrews 2:11 NASB

We were made to Love Him first and then one another. It is so important that He died for it.

Why do you suppose it is so hard to even like one another sometimes, let alone love one another. Does it come down to how we define love, or is it because there is only so much time in the day?

What does brotherly love look like to you?

Oh btw, I am NOT addressing online forum interactions. Personally, I believe debates done logically and wisely, and with brotherly love (something I often see) can be a great pastime and profitable to our faith and growth. I so enjoy coming together to reason, fellowship and laugh.


I think the message of love is at the core of our faith, and also the most difficult to do. Even those we are closest to presents great effort to our flesh from time to time.

I know brotherly love isn't all rainbows and sunshine, all warm and fuzzy, but it should be considerate, merciful, and honor our Father.

So what does brotherly love look like?

In proverbs we have this verse…

A friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity.
Proverbs 17:17 NASB

This causes me to ponder more…

There is nothing spiritually abnormal about not caring for the ways of others, actually when we know others are in error we either correct them providing they will be, or we have patience in longsuffering....…….that is a can of worms at times.

Perhaps when we review the parable of the Good Samaritan we will understand more just who our neighbors are, who our brothers are....

Een so, we are to love our brethren especially, and our enemies too, so there is not much room for doubting who and how it seems.

I honestly believe I love everyone, though perhaps not as I should yet, but my acid self test is simple, I cannot name anyone I want to go to the eternal fire.. Oh to be as our Savior, Jesus, Yeshua, and be prepared to love evenunto dath al who would have us dead.

Praise God always and I pray for His gifts for all and especially for me of faith, hope and love, especially love fodr our Father IS Love. god bless you for this wonderful thought provoking and soul moving post Charlirenee...j

Yes that parable does help us understand who our brothers are.

U know you made a good point of test, asking yourself do you want anyone to suffer the penalties of eternal punishment. It makes me think, perhaps I am going to ask myself, do I even want another to hurt in anyway, here on earth? I know calling out a brother, rebuking Him, or ignoring them all together can be for their own good. However, do we want to harm them, cause them pain in anyway? We often say, it is our call to be accountable to one another, but it seems rebuking should be done in a graceful and considerate manner, hoping to help the other grow, not hoping hurt or discard them.

I am encouraged that you love everyone. I certainly try, even when it isn't easy. I am learning and learning more that to love and forgive others not so easy is such a huge blessing to our soul. It is then that we see how far we have to go in that quest and where we are lacking in that arena. It gives us an opportunity to expand loves potential within ourselves.

I think the key is in forgiveness. I mean look at Our greatest example of love. On the cross His words included forgive them, they know not what they do.

You are so right, Our Father is love!!

I find at the core of love is forgiveness, and at that core is humility.

I suppose he who has been given much, salvation, inheritance, the Lord Himself, is expected to offer our ongoing mercy and humility.

None of us are where we ought to be in regards to love, but thanks be to Him, there is always hope.

When we are chastised by our Father it is the go-ahead to rejoice and that right gleefully for He only chastises those whom He loves.. This is how I came to the custom of thanking Him for what seems good and what may seem bad. Again, at my age, when something occurs to my health, when in my youth I would have been preoccupied or even upset, I now gladly thank Him, for everything truly works to the good for us for we do love our Father. I could never believe you do not love anyone from what I have gleanded from your posts. Also I snse that amon that knowing the truth and the truth setting us free is largely made up of what you have mentioned, and that is forgiving all. I am free to forgive all and extend mercy and what I am given to extendin love becaue Jesus, Yeshua, gives us this freedom, and it is truly being free. You know this I sense also becaus of your very word in your posts. I do not like any family menber doubting themsleves, but inssgtead of this we must look to how we trust our Savior. We are always doubtful, but He is strong for us and makes us more and more just as He is. Praise Jesus, Yeshua ...amen.

On brothers...well we have an example of what brotherly love looks like in the Old testament the story of Joseph and his eleven brothers. At first all his brothers hated him for having the coat of many colours. They treated him very badly as he had all these dreams. Then as the turns out he was given up for dead, sold into slavery, and apart from his brothers for many years...until the famine. They all came to egypt to buy food.

Now Joseph could have remained bitter and got his revenge. But no, he tested them first and forgive them when he saw how much they loved the youngest, Benjamin.

It makes me cry each time I read the reconciliation scene.

We have another example of what brotherly love looks like with Jesus and the twelve disciples. Esp the close relationship between Jesus and Peter.

Oh I can not wait to meet Joseph. I agree his level of mercy and compassion demonstrated touches my heart too. His brothers also showed how quickly jealousy and bitterness can take hold and how it can cause hatred of a brother. Yes@peter and Jesus, what another compelling example of brotherly love.
