If so then what should they have done to make sure they did not "run out" of the Holy Spirit? What does having brought an extra container of oil translate into? What does that mean? Praying always?
Have you ever had the anointing of God on you?
maybe you were preaching and felt the power of God fall on you?
or you saw someone in worship and you could tell they were having a supernatural visitation?

No oil...no go with Jesus.
in fact those rejected face the tribulation.
Those rejected face (Eternal Judgement)

Revelation 14:14-18 below is nothing more than the (Harvest/Resurrection) at the (Second Coming) end of this world, as Matthew 13:37-43 shows this in parable with a full explanation

Second Coming, Angel's Harvest, End Of The World

the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.

the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.

Same Event, Harvest/Resurrection, End Of The World.

Revelation 14:14-18KJV
14 And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle.
15 And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the time is come for thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe.
16 And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth; and the earth was reaped.
17 And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle.
18 And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe.

Matthew 13:37-43KJV
37 He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man;
38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;
39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.
40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.
41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;
42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

It is going to be very difficult for you to make a case about the meaning of the word anointing. And certainly a theological error to suggest that only those who have had an emotional awareness of being "in the zone" in a preaching moment as a mark of being one who is not going to be left behind. There is nothing we can do to earn our salvation. I do believe people can fall away and not be ready because of sin and that is what I believe the 5 foolish represent.

What does it mean to have extra oil? Watch and pray. To be saved? No we are saved while we are watching and praying. But even if it does not fit into the "not by works" mentality of the reformed there is something in this parable that does warn us to always watch and pray and rather than argue with those who want to figure out the mind of the sovereign God I would rather just know that I am saved and watch and pray and stay alert also. I don't care if someone accuses me of believing in salvation by works, I know better, and I am going to be sober, and vigilant and watch and pray and hate sin and not think I can dabble with it and still go to heaven.

It is the opposite

your conjecture has it meaningless.

the wise said to the foolish "no lest we not have enough for ourselves".
the oil was in fact the critical difference to making it in with the groom.

No oil...no go with Jesus.

You can't buy anything that is necessary to be in the procession with Christ and enter His Kingdom from dealers.
This is evidence that the parable isn't an allegory. Not everything on the story represents something else in reality.
the moral of the story they were not there when the bridegroom arrived, and were locked out. Because they were not prepared for a long wait.

I believe the moral of the story is,
The 5 foolish virgins were "unsaved" (I Know You Not), it's that simple

Matthew 25:11-12KJV
11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.
12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

Possible. It's possible that they weren't prepared because they really didn't care, until reality struck, and then it was too late.

They wouldn't have been there at all if they didn't care nor would they have rushed out late at night to buy oil. I maintain these are Christians that ran out of truth or faith etc when the darkness of the Great Tribulation happened and they are the ones who commit Apostasy.

You arent saved unless your sealed by the Holy Spirit, and this seal is until the day of redemption Eph 4:30

The scripture is very clear, the Lord never knew them "Unsaved"

Matthew 25:11-12KJV

One thing for sure, without the oil of the Holy Spirit stirred up and refreshed in us....we are foolish and Jesus will not know us without the oil of the Holy Spirit nor will we be ready at His return.

They are all virgins which leads me to consider they are all saved Believers but, perhaps they are not all the Bride....

The people rejected by Christ are never saved people though.

Mat 25:12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

He doesn't even know them and that's a bad thing for them.

They hold virginity as a high standard in many "Non-Christian" religions, would they also be saved?

What is your take of Matthew 25:1-13 -
Mine is this, The Five Foolish Virgins are those living after the flesh and dying (Rom 8:13a) -
The Five Wise Virgins will put to death the deeds of the body and live (Rom 8:13b).
It's a pretty simple concept, Jesus is telling us TWICE that exactly half of Christendom will not be ready for the Rapture. The Virgin always = the saved Christan, thus the 10 Virgins = ALL Christendom, because 10 represents COMPLETENESS as in the 10 Commandments as in the Church of Smyrna having Tribulation 10 Days which = the Whole Church Age, as in there being 10 Kings that arise out of the Fourth Beast which just means ALL Europe, etc., etc. So, the 10 Virgins stands for all Christiandom, and the 5 Virgins are how many are ready to go to Heaven for the Marriage to the Lamb. The same ratio can be seen in Matt. 24:36-51, where two are in the field and ONE will be TAKEN and ONE will be LEFT. It's a 50 percent ratio in each case, which tells me half of the so-called Church will have to lay down their lives during the tribulation period because they are "HALF STEPPING" play Christians at the Rapture.

Your claim is false, the five foolish virgins weren't part of Christendom

You arent saved unless your sealed by the Holy Spirit, and this seal is until the day of redemption Eph 1:13, 4:30

Ephesians 1:13KJV
13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

Ephesians 4:30KJV
30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

The scripture is very clear, the five foolish virgins were never saved and sealed by the Holy Spirit, the Lord never knew them "Unsaved"

Matthew 25:11-12KJV
11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us.
12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not.

There are two other parables in the same chapter. It's wrong to dwell excessively on this one alone.

Yeah, that is why I pointed out elsewhere in this thread (I think it was),
that vv.14-30 are parallel with that of Luke 12:36-48 (a passage stating it pertains to "when he will RETURN FROM the wedding"... THEN the meal [G347]);

and vv.31-34 (and context) further parallels what Jesus had already said in Matt19:28 (about how, "in the regeneration, when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also [i.e. 'the 12'] shall sit upon 12 thrones, judgING the 12 tribes of Israel")... both of these passages supplying a "when" about them = )

None of them are the bride in the parable. They are friends of the Bridegroom. This is a parable taken from the common custom of a Jewish Wedding celebration.

The friends were to wait until they heard the announcement of the coming Bridegroom and join in a procession of participants invited to walk behind him with lamps lit as they entered into a wedding feast/party and if they did not have a lamp lit they were not allowed to join or enter into the party.

None of them were the bride which was given to the Bridegroom in a different ceremonial custom than this one being explained in the parable.

This is one of those excellent examples where reading commentaries will give people the background information that is missing from the text. When it was written everyone understood the custom and so it was not explained. But unless you read about ancient Jewish wedding ceremonies from another source besides the bible you will not know this information. The next time someone says they don't believe in reading commentaries ask them to explain this parable and see how many different interpretations you get based on lack of knowledge.

Some have thought that Jesus was talking about Bridegroom coming to marry 10 virgins at once but had to settle for 5.

The parable is not about being ready for a long wait and not thinking that you have time to prepare at the last minute.

I often think about this. I have lived long enough to see it happen and know that I will continue to see it happen and need to preach this message using this parable so that church goers will awake to the sober reality of the danger they are in when they live such compromising lives thinking that they will "get right" later, but later never comes.

I don't know if there are more compromisers in church who are tolerating sin today or if I am just more aware of it.

I think the parable is a true picture of who it will be when the Lord returns. I used to think that it was a warning to help change the outcome, but the outcome is going to be like this and being aware of that helps us to be ready.

In a nutshell BELIEVERS warned to keep extra oil.
Filled with the spirit to overflowing.
but there is no 'extra oil' in the parable.
the foolish maidens had no oil ((Matthew 25:3)) -- not 'insufficient oil' but no oil at all.
the wise maidens had none to split with them ((Matthew 25:9)) -- they have what is sufficient for them, but not 'extra'

we're all agreed that the oil represents the Spirit, right?
so the foolish did not have the Spirit, at all. i think that part is pretty clear - and Christ, the Groom, says He does not know them ((Matthew 25:12))

it's a more difficult question for me to answer why the wise can't "share" their oil/Spirit. what does that mean?

There is not a ghost of a hint that the 5 foolish get to lay down their lives for the Lord and go to heaven. Not a ghost of a hint.
