In Calvinism were told about the doctrine of Total depravity, or total inability . But is it true ? How many things can the unbeliever do or not do ?
This is what a Calvinist website has to say on Total depravity.
(Got questions)

Total depravity - is it biblical?

ANSWER

Total depravity is a phrase or name that is used to summarize what the Bible teaches about the spiritual condition of fallen man. It is the “T” in the acronym TULIP, which is commonly used to enumerate what are known as the five points of Calvinism or the doctrines of grace. Because the name “total depravity” can cause people to have wrong ideas about what is meant, some people prefer to use terms like “total inability,” “righteous incapability,” “radical corruption” or even “moral inability.” Yet what is important is not the name assigned to the doctrine but how accurately the doctrine summarizes what the Bible teaches about the spiritual condition of fallen man. No matter which name you use to refer to “total depravity,” the fact remains that when properly understood it is an accurate description of what the Bible does teach on this important subject.

While often misunderstood, the doctrine of total depravity is an acknowledgement that the Bible teaches that as a result of the fall of man (Genesis 3:6) every part of man—his mind, will, emotions and flesh—have been corrupted by sin. In other words, sin affects all areas of our being including who we are and what we do. It penetrates to the very core of our being so that everything is tainted by sin and “…all our righteous acts are like filthy rags” before a holy God (Isaiah 64:6). It acknowledges that the Bible teaches that we sin because we are sinners by nature. Or, as Jesus says, “So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit.” (Matthew 7:17-18).
End of quote .

Do you agree with this as a professing non calvinist ?
There are many things i disagree with here. Which hopefully we can get into. But how many things does calvinism really say man cannot do ? when we scrutinize this doctrine it raises questions. ' sin nature ',where is that in the bible for one?
But the aim of this post is to look at what a unbeliever is really unable to do if they are totally depraved ect
. It seems as if unbelievers can do pretty much the things that believers do . They can pay taxes , love their wives, stay faithful, be loyal at work , care for their families, give to charities, build hospitals , invent things for good , create medicines, ect . When we think of the things that Christians have done over history we could probably find unbelievers who have done equally good things also .
I listened to something recently that said that Calvinsim is really teaching ' singular depravity " . That when you scrutinise the doctrine of the T in TULIP all its really saying is that there's only ONE thing man cannot do ,and that's ' believe the Gospel .

Thoughts?

R.O.S.E

Resurrected Offer of Salvation Eternal Life = through the Lord Jesus Christ for all who so ever will.

Elections is not Selection as some of our Calvin friends think.

It is an area that God only knows and man is trying to get into the " Elected" to explain those who they think can't be saved because they are not Selected. The problem with this extreme thought is that it doesn't take into account the Power of the Gospel as Paul said Whom I think, ( I Could be wrong) is more authoritative than John Calvin that the Gospel is the POWER of GOD unto Salvation.

The focus on total depravity which is the state of man without God and the action of man that are sinful, due to sinful nature.

That is not the Gospel man is fallen and on their way to hell. Jesus is the answer not to go there and the Power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is able to stop a man from going to Hell.

The death Burial and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ is the Gospel message. Those who place their faith in Christ might be saved?

No! Shall be saved.

According to John Calvin, even those who have been justified by Christ “cannot perform one work which, if judged on its own merits, is not deserving of condemnation” (Institutes, bk. III, ch. 9, para. 9).

That is ridiculous to me, but there are people that believe it for some reason.

The sin of a saint on earth will bring its own judgment with that sin.
Based on 1 Corinthians 3:11-15,
It doesn’t say the final judgement is in heaven or on earth, it just makes mention of the “Day” in verse 13.

after a saint dies we are a judge in heaven which not part of the Great White Throne Judgement. That one is for all who rejected Christ.

As Rev says.

a Christian today on the earth will receive in their body the payment for sin how?

1. they die death is because of sin the faith and hope in Christ is the resurrection
2. they suffer physically for sins they do now. drugs, alcohol, sexual sin, and yes many Calvinists do this too and still do as they try to Tiptoe through the TULIPS.

God is not mocked. He knows the heart of all and the hidden sin we all have. God will deal with each of them and me too.

No unclean soul is allowed in heaven even briefly. Jesus wouldn’t even let anyone touch him when he returned from the dead because of this.

FYI the flesh is unsaved. Your mind is made of flesh it has to be continually renewed daily. When you die you will lay down that great hold on you and that is on me the flesh. Until it is called and changed on that day, it will die and turn to dust.

You battle as all do with lust and perversion and other sins you do. Man may not be able to see them or know them but God is fully knowing. You are making into heaven by grace and that alone through faith. That is it.

If you do what Jesus asked us to do, you most assuredly will make it to heaven. But to say you will be brought straight up to heaven for your final judgment is another thing. I don’t see a verse that says that. 1 Corinthians clearly points to a process by fire where your works are judged but I don’t see anywhere in the Bible that says everyone that will attain eternal life will shoot straight up to heaven.

The bible says there is once appointed for man to die then the judgment. There are many types of Judgment in the word of God

The " Final Judgement " is what refers to as the Great White Throne Judgment.

Yet there is a law unto its self of reaping what you sow which is a type of judgment.

There are many Christians who are dying due to the sin they did in their bodies before they were saved. God forgave them and saved them yet many of them have liver issues, diabetes, cancer, and many other things due to the life they lived.

many are healed , or treated by doctors yet many are still suffering in their bodies what is called "compensation"

2cor 5:10

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive compensation for his deeds done through the body, in accordance with what he has done, whether good or bad

this to :

gal 6:8

For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh(in the flesh) reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.

Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death,( this to is physical death) but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

If you do what Jesus asked us to do, you most assuredly will make it to heaven// What are the list of things a person needs to do to make it to heaven? I believe God requires everyone to Believe what Jesus did in order to make it to heaven. 1 cor 1.21 .
Eph 1.13 -14 . Rom 10 .9

Well, are we talking about what a new believer must do/have or someone that is not a new believer?

You’re free to disagree. It’s not explicit, it’s my belief because of the the verse where Jesus appears right after the resurrection, John 20:17.

He doesn’t want to be touched before he ascends into heaven. We know Jesus didn’t go to heaven between the time he died and resurrected. He had the sin of the world on him when he died. I believe he was cleansed of it. Otherwise I don’t think he would of had a problem with being touched.
